Just wondering if any of you have had problems getting your breastfed babies to drink formula? My 4 1/2 month old boy (currently fully breastfed) does NOT like formula at all. All brands except one he won't have a bar of - he will drink a bit of Karicare if hungry enough but not happy about it !!

I'd like to be able to give him the odd bottle of formula if I haven't expressed enough or if I'm going out and leaving him with someone. He takes a bottle of EBM no problem.

My daughter didnt care what she was given in a bottle she would drink anything !!

Have heard not to mix breastmilk & formula - thought about doing this to gradually get him onto formula.

Any ideas?
Thanks !

Not much help but I was told if you start them having a bottle of whatever early on they generally don't have a problem taking a bottle later esp if you continue giving a bottle regularly of whatever it might be. Lily used to take a bottle of EBM but now won't have it as we stopped for a month and now she hates it!

No advice re the formula as we are exclusively bf here too. Perhaps keep persisting with it as you said he will drink a bit but not happily...?

I am sure someone will have better advice though!

LOL i cant help thinking good on him for knowing what he likes! which isnt helpfyul sorry.

I never gave my babies any bottles and still managed to go out with out them and the older he gets the longer you can be away from him. i wouldnt worry too much if you dont have to get him to like it.

We give DS a dream feed of formula - he sometimes wakes up when we are feeding it to him and he hasn't spat it out! Haven't tried giving it to him at any other times of the day.

Sorry not much help!

I would stick with the one he likes and keep offering him a bottle once a day or every few days. He's probably only refusing because it's something so different, so if you keep offering a small amount of Karicare he should take a bottle eventually.

You could also try a slower / faster teat in case that's bothering him too.

If he takes a bottle of EBM no problem and will drink Karicare if he *has* too and you are only planning on him needing it if he needs to be away from you during a feed .... then I'd just keep offering the Karicare when you need to and not stress too much. If there's a time when he needs to drink and you're not there and you're out of EBM then at least you know he will drink the Karicare even if he's not thrilled about the idea

I never had to mix formula with BM (C would and still does eat anything going) but my girlfriends have done it. Make sure you make the formula to the instructions on the tin first and then you add the EBM afterwards. Also you want the formula and EBM to be the same temp when you mix them Mind you, he still might not like the new taste and then you've wasted your EBM ....
