Hi there, sorry but I'm a bit clueless when it comes to car seats.

My 4-month-old DD has been in a borrowed MaxiCosi car seat since birth. I'm not sure how long it's supposed to last but it won't be much longer!!

I'd love a recommendation for which to buy next. How long should the next stage last for? Can it still be fitted rear facing (I heard that's best till 1year?). And (sorry one last question) do they all need to be professionally installed? That makes it had to switch them between cars, right?

Help much appreciated!

no they dont have to be professionally installed.

depending on your budget.

there is the cosco which RF to 16kgs and retails for around $200 can get them from baby on the move. my 2year 7 month old is in one of these

the radian which RF to 20kgs and thenFF in a 5 point harness to 36kgs these retail fro $500 and can get them from bumbles.co.nz

the Brio Zento RFs to 25kgs I think you can FF in these from 10kgs but can only use the 5 points harness to 18kgs. this seat is around $580 and can be purchasd from Baby on the move.

hope this helps

Thanks very much NovemberMum. That's really helpful. Can the Cosco be FF facing too, or just RF?
How do you rate the Guardian and the Meridian seats? (or maybe they're just the convertible kind?) Thanks!

yuup FF up to 19kgs .

we have a merdian and find it OK...IMO it is overpriced for what it is as it only RF to 12kgs. my son has now gone into a cosco and his sister in a radian.

I would chose a cosco over a meridan for the extended rear facing and it is a seat in most peoples budget.

The maxi cosi fits up to 12kgs. It does not matter if there feet go over the edge of the carseat. Most children get 9month-1yr use before having to move to the other seat's.

Weve got the maxi-cosi capsule aswell, and I didnt realise it went up to 12kg - thanks mummyof2each! I was thinking about moving DS into his carseat but have just found out its only rear facing until 9kg, so dont think ill use that until he is forward facing.

Thanks for those car seat recommendations Nov Mum. I like the sound of the cosco, we will look into that.

I was going to say the Maxi Cosi capsule is up to 13kg, so you should be able to use it up to a year. It's only when bubs head hits the top of the seat or they hit the weight limit that you need to change. My DD1 who was at 75th percentile height was in hers until 14 months.

That means if you want to you can go straight to a forward facing carseat when your baby is a year old, although of course you can still get a rear facing carseat if you want to.

baby on the move are really good at giving expert advice on carseats and they'll show you how to fit them - they've been really helpful with knowledge -
I think OHbaby has a car seat expert too?
