I am having dilemmas as to what to do with my wee man. He is nearly five months now but not on solids yet (not showing all the signs). The last four nights he has slept through from 7pm till 6.30am (bliss!) but last night woke at 4am. He tried to put himself back to sleep but obviously couldn't as he started crying about 20 minutes later. My DH tried to resettle him, offered a dummy, checked his temp etc but he wasn't having a bar of it. In in the end i fed him (he is fully bf) and he was STARVING. Went straight back to sleep till 7am.
My problem is, the morning feed (around 7 - 7.30pm) is affected if he feeds that late in the night. Normally he takes both sides, if he feeds that late, he will only take one. I would RATHER he held on till 6.30am or so and just take both sides as he has been doing. However I don't know how to get him to do this, or whether I even should??? I noticed he was definitely more hungry at the last feed last night, so perhaps he just couldn't last? I don't want to deprive him, but also don't want to create a habit, and SOON would like him to not eat at all at night. I had it in my head I would give him till he is fully established on solids. Any thoughts??? |

I wouldn't be worried about trying to wean his night feeds, it is completely normal for them to be waking in the night for a feed. The only way I can get DS to take both sides if he gets too drowsy after one side is to change his nappy and pop him on the other breast -------------

I would be inclined to feed him at the 4 am feed. If you don't want it to impact on the 7.30am feed then if he continues to wake then just gradually shorten the length of the 4 am feed.

| EsmesMum's advice makes sense to me. I'd wait till solids are well established (3 meals a day) before cutting night feeds. |

I have the same situation here. T sometimes sleeps through the night and sometimes wakes at 4am (he is 3.5 months). If he feeds at 4am, then when he wakes up at 7am he isn't hungry and won't eat. For some reason this tends to throw the whole day out for him, and he invariably ends up out of sorts and has a meltdown around 4 or 5pm.
He's FF, so when he wakes at 4am I give him 100mls (he usually has between 150 - 200 mls at a feed). This is enought to fill the gap and he goes straight back to sleep, but when he wakes up he isn't so full that he won't eat, and will usually take another 100mls or so. And he seems to be much happier for eating first thing. |
