Don't want to go into too much detail, but as part of my councilling I am doing I want to find out if someone is still alive. I am going to go into the Library to see if he is on the electrol roll. I have tried googling him with no luck. I have no idea where he is living (if alive) and all I have is his first and last name and date and month of birth unsure of year. And I don't want to ask my family about him as he is no longer part of our family (thank god).

Any other ideas??

You've probably already tried, but even searching oldfriends if his name is on there, and contacting someone who may have been in the same workplace or something like that.

Failing that, going through the phonebook and just ringing around, but it depends if you want to get in touch with him, which you possibly don't.

Maybe give Salvation Army a go... they have a special unit for tracing family members.  The contact details are http://www.salvationarmy.org.nz/contact-us/ - on this page

I did this when searching for my dad in the end my mum told me his name finally, and we ended up meeting by chance at the 7s in WGTN in 06 where I happened to be working.

He would be well into his 70's now so the chances of facebook and old friends woúld be low. But I am going to try the others.

Yeah I don't want him to be alive still (gosh that sounds horrible), so I dón't really want to ring around, but I gave the whitepages a go and there were a few with his name in New Zealand.

I know he went to prison in the early 90's so I wonder if there are records with the prisons.

if he was sentenced for any of the reasons in the offenders database, you might be able to track him here : http://www.safe-nz.org.nz/Data/database.htm

Since you know his general age you could use the year of his birth when googling or looking up electoral role using each of the years that it could be.

I agree with the suggestions put above (I'm trying to find my DH's birth father but we don't have a surname or many other details so that makes it very difficult).

If all else fails you can always try an advertisement in the Women's Weekly - it goes nationwide and they have ads in there where people are searching for people. There's also TV3's missing people programme but perhaps you don't want anything as public as that.

I definitely think there must be prison records that you must be able to access - surely by internet? Or if not, at the library if they still have those microfiches? Ask a librarian!

I just need to warn you -- this section (which is called Noticeboard) has a waiting list of over a year for the magazine... Although I think it goes on the website much faster than that. I used to work for NZWW and handled this page and it was amazing to see the number of requests that came in! Mostly for knitting patterns, obscure geneaology searches, and colour-matched balls of wool...

Yeah I really don't want to go public with it so I will have to give the magazine and that tv programme a miss. I think if I wanted to see him again but I never want to see him again if I can help it.

Nothing appeared on the website for prisoners which surprises me as he got one of those convictions. COuld of been because he was in and out in the early 90's.

If you know the dates etc, you could always ask for him to be put on there, and then see if they come up with any more information.

I need to find my ex-fiances rap sheet and get him put on there.

The safe database isn't complete so that may be why he is not showing up there. There isn't a publically accessible list of ex-prisoners available (due to privacy act restrictions). However, depending on the reason you want information about this guy, you may be able to write to the Dept of Corrections and request it (there are some exceptions that allow them to release information, but it's generally fairly strict).

what about the sensible sentencing site. i found a guy i went to school with on there (incidentally, not looking for him - especially after seeing what he had done)

Thanks Liz, will have a look at that too. Going to take Andrew into the library today to see if I can find anything. Only problem I have is that I have no idea what roll he would be on.
