When we had daniel we decided it would be nice his middle name came from our family given that boys last names generally don't ever change when they get married so he will always have DH's familys name so it would be cool to have something from us too so we gave him my dads name for his middle name.

My dad was sooooo chuffed when we told him after Daniel was born that we used his middle name and were glad we kept it a secret until then.

With this one I think it would be cool to do the same kinda thing rather than just giving a middle name that means nothing. My grandad died almost a year ago and he was the coolest grandad ever and I thought it would be cool to use his name but its really old fashioned... Lionel.

Not much really like gels with it. We have 2 names that we like for the first name (but we are keeping one a secret). I don't know my grandads middle name and I don't wanna ask family cause that ruins the surprise aspect and if I dont know his middle name it doesn't hold as much meaning..

Would you just use Lionel?

We used DH's Grandmother's name for Hannah's middle name, and will be using DH's first name as this one's middle name (family tradition on that one).
So I love the idea of using Lionel, since it has a special meaning to you.

Could you double-barrel it? Pick a middle name that does gel with your chosen christian name and add Lionel in there as a nod to your Grandfather?

Or would your Grandfather's surname work as a middle name? My boys have 2 middle names each, one from each side, and one of Ben's is Parker which is my Grandmother's maiden name and goes quite well with the rest of his name

Unfortunately his last name sounds hideous with our last name and I'd feel a bit sorry for him having to spell 2 out of his 3 names

I would use Lionel just because its special.

Elias' middle name is Findlay (because thats my Dads name), it doesnt really go with anything, but its the significance behind the name that counts to us.

Use it, or do a sneaky and see if you can find something at your mums place to do with family documents. Only other thing I can think of is if he went to War I know how we can find details about family names.

My granddads name is Malcolm and dp HATES it with a passion but he raised me like a dad so it means A LOT to me and I am determined to have it as a middle name at least.

I think if it has a special meaning that out rules everything else...

I would use it and I actually really like Lionel! Although I can see your problem if it doesn't work with your first names. We had to change the name I really wanted to DS1 as it didn't work with the middle name - he would have been Beau Pete...

My boys have traditional and old school middle names of Peter and Edward - one from DH's side and one from mine. I like that they have traditional names as their first names aren't.

My first has a name that is not directly linked to my side of the family but it reminds me of my nana. Funny thing is my nana was from Ashburton and I could only think Ashlee so that's her middle name. For DS his middle name is Kieran and that is because my family are Irish and it is irish (not spelling the irish way tho). I would do it as it means so much to you.

If you don't really like the name could you find a name that means the same as Lionel and use that instead

I think I will just use it. It doesnt really really clash with the first name choices we have at the mo. And I just realised how close his anniversary is to my due date. Kinda freaky.

Our bubs is going to have Reginald as a middle name - its after my dad's dad who was a much loved man when he was alive. I totally realise its not a cool or modern name really so it will no doubt fade into the background and we'll be telling our son often why he has it.
Middle names become less and less important the older we get........

Thing is how often do you use middle names apart from filling in forms etc.
The only time my parents ever used both my first and middle name was when I was in trouble or they wanted my attention.
A lot of people use their grandparents middle names giving a lot of kids old fashioned middle names.
My girl will have Sheryl it doesn't necessarily go with either Catherine or Poppy, but its my late-Mum's name and was always going to be used regardless of what the 1st name is.

My little brother's middle name is Gordon. He hated it when he was younger and would get teased but now he is nearly 15, he thinks it's quite cool that he is carrying on a famiy tradition. Our Dad's middle name is Gordon and both Mum and Dad's fathers first names are Gordon. If/when we have a boy, we will be using the family middle name, Joseph which is both DF and his Dad's middle name (they also have the same first name and they both think any boy born should have their first name as well but I have other ideas lol)
Anyway, I think Lionel is kinda cute

i agree, i think the fact your grandadad is really important to you ,you shouly use his name . i heifinated amelias middle name  using family names from both her dads side and my side ( looking back i would have just gone with my side as her dads side does nothing for her) anyway back to the point ,i dont particualy like those names ( rose-marie) but it was the sentimental reason i chose them ,a nd as sally said , i think Lionel is quite cool , id prob have to use Rodney as a middle name if i ever had a boy

I would use...middle names are hardly ever used day to day so if it is not your favourite but has special meaning then it won't matter.

i know a guy called lionel and he is about 24 so it is still around just not very popular.

DD has the same middle name as my mum and I and if i have another baby and its a girl iher middle name would be the same too.

DS has two middle names, Heath and Garry, they don't really go together but i don't mind. Garry is after my uncle who died not long before i got pregnant and Heath is after DP's baby sister who died, her name was heather but we couldn't call a boy that (in the old days they would have) so shortened it to Heath.

Again if we have another girl her name would be Rose Marie, Rose is DP's baby sisters middle name and Marie the same as mine.

We did the same with DS, James is his middle name and was Grandad's first name. I was going to use Grandad's middle name (Patrick) but DP had sort of an all out war going on with a guy named Patrick at the time so that was NOT gonna happen.

I know a Lionel, so it's definately not a name people who don't know you will think you're weird for using.

Personally I would have a sneaky attempt to find out his middle name, but if that's a no-go I'd go with Lionel.

If he was in the war, you can go to war records. You can get one lot of personnel papers for free. I can't remember the website though.

People might affiliate it more with him if you use his first name than an unknown middle name.

Both my kids have mine & Dh's middles names. Coopers middle name handly is a family name on both side

Is your grandad buried near you? Normally they put their middle names on the headstone as well.

I think its cool to use family names - we did with Rhyley and Elodie.. Elodie even has Dh grandad's middle name as hers - Sydney .

And names grow on you. We called DS Roy because DH and I both had a grandfather with that name. When DH suggested it I was really dubious but went along with it. It actually took me a few months to get used to calling him that, but it's cool now!

Because my Dh is chinese we have given the kids a chinese middle name. It doesn't go well with european names but the meaning behind it is good. They use chinese characters from ancesters and then we can mix them to find a middle name we like. After they are born the name just sort of fits. So use the family name. It is far more meaningful and once it is chosen the child owns the name and it just seems right.

The only popular reference for Lionel I think of is Lionel off Shorty Street and that was a long time ago now.

I think even if you ask what your Grandad's middle name is, it will still be a nice surprise for the family if you actually use it - I'd certainly check what it is just in case it is better!

Another idea is to get a look at your mother/father's birth cert as your Grandad's name would be on that.

LOL -Lionel off shorty street - I think the main guy in Braindead was also Lionel?

I also like using family names as middle names. Chelsea's middle name is Olive after DH's nana who passed away right before we found out I was pregnant. If we have a boy next his middle name will be Joseph which is still a family name as my brother and one of DH's brother's middle names are Joseph, and it's also MIL's maiden name. But really I just like it No idea about another girl though!
