I took DD to the doctors 8 days ago because of an ear infection/cough she had had for 6 weeks. He put her on Amoxicillin (sp) for 14 days.

Every single nappy DD has had for the past 5 days is dirty and full. I usually change her every 3ish hours but im having to do it every 1.5-2hours shes so bad. I understand that one of the side effects were more frequent dirty nappies but i didn't think it would be EVERY nappy. She wears iiti's and not even they can contain it. I feel so sorry for her because her bottom has been red raw since it started.

Then things got alot worse today. Her nappies are still dirty but have turned frothy/mucusy with blood and the red raw bottom is now red raw with welts.

She is her normal happy self but does still look pale with bags under her eyes.

The doctor isn't helping me at all either since he still hasn't phoned back after i rang asking him for an appointment and explaining what was wrong this morning.

Im worried but im not sure if i should be..

I would be concerned.

If I was you I would be making an appt to see the Dr. I wouldn't be waiting for himt o ring back, I woul just ring reception and make it. Its alot harder to fob you off when you are sitting in fromt of him. If he won't help ask to see another Dr.

They can change to another med and prescribe something for her bottom.

If it were me I would just turn up there and say I'm not going until I see him. And if your dr is no good then maybe ask to see someone else. It could be nothing but blood in poop is something that should always be checked out.

It certainly doesn't sound like something you should just ignore or ride out. Make an appt and see if there is something they can do - maybe take a nappy with you or at least a picture.
If you don't feel you are getting the answers you need I'd see someone else.

I agree with Blissful, I would just turn up there!  Hugs, I hope she is ok!

Yeah i might turn up there. The only appointment they gave me over the phone was tomorrow but they gave me that this morning.
The past 3 nappies that have blood on them are just sitting on top of my nappy bucket so ill show him them - I didn't want to rinse them jic.

I would just turn up too, all the best thats terrible that they havent got back to you!

Jayden had two lots of antibitoics close together once and ended up getting vomiting and dioreaha (sp?) from it as they are harsh on their tummies, so the Dr recommended stopping them, so maybe your Dr might change the type?

Probiotics can help too

all the best

I would just turn up, failing that see the nurse and she should get a doctor for you.

I'm a Registered Nurse and so my advice would be:

1) Persist in phoning the doctor requesting a change of antibiotic - they don't always have side effects like this to all antibiotics

2) Buy some paw paw cream, it's expensive but really good at healing nappy rash when it gets this bad. You might have to take her into the Dr though if it's so raw that it's getting infected (sounds awful!).... he may have to prescribe her another cream. It actually sounds like you'll have to book another appointment with him if it is that bad.

3) Change to disposables while she has a nappy rash like this. Cloth nappies don't help nappy rash. You'll also find the washing break a help

Good luck!

ETA: is the blood IN the poo or is it from her welts? If it's IN the poo then that is more serious and you need to be seen asap - if he can't see you today you'll have to go to an A&M after hours. But speak to the Practice Nurse - they are good at squeezing you in.

If it's just blood from the welts, that is not good and I would see the Dr for advice - tomorrow morning should be fine.

Oh yuck!

Has she had penicillin based anitbiotics before?

Reason I ask is that Daniel can't have penicillin based antibiotics cause he ends up with the runs big time. But there are other options they can have, we find cephlor (sp?) a great alternative to penicillin antibiotics.

Doesn't quite help you now but for future reference.

I wouldn't take being fobbed off like that!

ARGH!! They still wouldn't see me because he had gone home and the other one in the practice was too full and they kept saying it 'was just the medication'.
I didn't give her the lunchtime dose and there hasn't been any blood since i last posted. The blood wasn't from her welts - it was in the poo so for now i wont give her anymore. The best way i can describe it looks like the blood breastfed baby girls can get in their nappy when they are NB.
Its so incredibly frustrating!! I think ill change doctors...

Oh no - how horrible! Poor wee thing!

If it was me...I would go to a different doctor, and since there is blood in the poo, I would go to whitecross, a&e (not at the hospital).

Hope she feels better soon!

oh that must be horrible!!! poor wee thing!

When you do see a doc I would get a non penicillin based antibiotic... apparently this type of thing happened to me when I was 3/4yrs old (not as severe but still unpleasant)...there is a note in my file to this day (Im 28 now) that I am allergic to penicillin... which is not completely accurate and is causing hassles now I am UTD and have been really sick the last 2 months...

Long story short when your DD is all better and poss a bit older I would recommend getting some allergy tests done to be certain...

hope you get things sorted

I would advise you phone Healthline but by the time you read this it will be tomorrow morning so you can see the doctor then. I would have taken her to an after hours tonight for blood in the poo.

I called a family friend who came around to check her over and take her temp etc. She said shes okay but keep a very close eye on her. She thinks the nappies are to do with a combination of medicine and teething. The blood has stopped and shes gone from having 4 dirty nappies between 7 and 12 to only having 2. She said that if the blood comes back to not bother about after hours clinic but take her straight to middlemore to get some tests done. Im not going to wait a whole day though. When she wakes from her sleep if shes no better at all ill be taking her anyway. I just don't see the point in 'waiting'.

Yup im going to get her tested for lots of things when shes a little older. She can't tolerate anything Dairy either.
