Just wondering how long you are numb for after the c-section at middlemore.
How long do they keep the cathetor in for? What do they give you for pain medication. If you have drip and all in overnight who looks after baby? at Botany maternity wht pain medication do they have on hand, I am just scared of transferring too soon and then being stuck in pain. Can your hunny drive you to botany or do you have to take ambulance. |

| Sorry I can't help with Middlemore, but I've had four c-sections so far (5th in Nov) & though they were all at same hospital, same ob, each time has been different- the policies seem to change a lot- e.g pain relief, iv, catheter, recovery time. Only things consistently is after 24hrs on morphine pump it was paracetamol only, and if I wanted to transfer to a birthing unit closer to home I had to do it within 24hrs of having baby, DH taking me in car or ambulance if we paid for it. |

| Oh and I'm afraid it was me who looked after baby in hospital each time, even with drips, catheter etc in. I wound up putting baby in bed with me each time, sleeping between my legs at the end of the bed. Just made sure the little table thing with the Nappies etc in it was within reach. (You might want to take your own wetwipes, our hospital only provided chux-type things that you had to wet in the sink to use- which was out of reach.) |

I had my baby by csection at middlemore in January.
I was induced so had the lure in my hand from the start. she was delivered by csection at 4.48am. I was numb until that afternoon I think, it slowly wears off so is different for everyone. Catheter was removed the next day. I showered that night but they left the catheter in until the following morning just in case. I had a morphine drip that i just pressed the button for. This was turned off and taken out that night so probably 15-16 hours later. Baby is in your room. I got MW / Nurse to pass her too me - they did change her in the morning but once I could get up I did it all. they did help with latching etc. Botany only have Voltaren or Ibuprofen and Panadol - I took Ibuprofen every 8hours and panadol every 6hours - kept my pain under control. Ask the doctor at MM to give you a script for the Ibuprofen before you transfer. I also used a heat pack at both MM and Botany. At botany it was my own one so maybe pack one to take. DP drove us to Botany. DD was born monday morning, transferred Wednesday afternoon. Middlemore have electric beds, so you can push a button to raise/lower it to the baby's bassinette height, or to the floor to get up and down. I had my c-section in the morning, and the epi lure and catheter both removed the following morning. You can ask for the catheter to be put in AFTER the epi has taken effect, apparently its very uncomfortable going in otherwise! My PCP (the buzzer they give you to control pain relief via the epi leur) with #1 was Morphine as it had been a crash c-section, but with #2 it was just Pethidine (elective) and I stopped using it by mid afternoon and was just having ibuprofen and panadol, barely any pain felt.
You look after baby yourself, but nurses are available at the push of a button to help if needed. At one stage i had 2 nurses trying to get Jae to latch cos she went on a nursing strike on night 2! They provide nappies, but not wipes, so like tictac said, take some wipes with you! I stayed 3 nights, and then went straight home, they asked me after the 2nd night if i wanted to transfer, but since I only lived 5 minutes from hospital, they were happy for me to stay another night then go straight home (plus I was still being monitored for excessive blood loss) ------------- Brandon - 05/12/2003

Hi I've had one CS - though not where you are going. Pain relief - I had an epidural and that took a while to wear off - they wouldn't let me walk until well and truly quite a few hours later. I am not sure if they injected a local pain relief at the op site, but I didn't need pain relief at all except for panadol. I had an IV drip with saline for about 24 hrs and the catheter was removed some time the next day. For looking after baby - the nurses left baby beside me, and encouraged me to ring the bell when I wanted my baby lifted. I really wish someone had taken care of my baby just for a few hours and then I could have gotten some sleep. Found I couldn't sleep well at the hospital though anyway. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| Amazing how different the hospitals can be! I had general for first two (emergency then crash), spinal blocks not epidural for next two (electives). The midwives had said to buzz if I needed help but when I did they never came, =(. Was really bad one time, can't remember which, but the pcp (thanks for the reminder what it's called!) had it's siren going cos it'd run out of morphine and it took an hour for someone to come. The staff were mostly nice, think they were just understaffed. |
