Hi - my partner and I are expecting our first baby and we are total newbies to the whole baby thing

We want to start building a list of what we need to get (vs want lol) and what we should buy new vs buying secondhand

So, any help with stuff you found useful and stuff that we shouldn't bother getting would be much appreciated

I loved my sling, I found that really useful and still use it now. Especially great for those times when you don't really want or need to get the stroller out.

I also really liked our hammock, but probably not a necessity, I borrowed mine.

Playgyms are great. I have one that plays music when he hits the toys and converts to tummy time which is really cool - but anyone works!

Soft rattles are really good first toys

For the standard things I looked at the list from baby factory etc and got that stuff.

One thing we didn't use much were the bath seat things. We used them sometimes but didn't really need them.

Def a wrap or sling.
Those nighties or suits with fold over mitts
Cloth nappies/wipes
Wraps for swaddling
Old school cloth nappies for burping etc
Check out TM for clothes and things

We never used our bath seat thing either.

Thats alli can think of now

We use our 6mths+ bath seat, but we never really used the new born bath support (like a ramp).
Love love love all-in-ones (full body with feet, s.h. is ok they aren't worn out after one baby).
Elfwear merino onesies (button under crotch from babystar, so much softer than the ones from B.F.)
Exersauces are fantastic (4mths +), but you may as well get s.h.
We ended up with way too much cot bedding. And hundreds of hand knitted botties he never wore (they didn't stay on him at all little squiggle bum).   In general we ended up with way too many 0000 clothes.

Do you go to antenatal class? They'll give you a list, or you could pop into Baby Factory and they have a list that is colour coded Need vs. Want.

You don't have to buy heaps of fancy toys, you can get 2nd hand or try making your own.

Everyone told me not to buy NB clothes as they wouldn't fit so I bour 0-3 and 3-6 and NB was miles too big on her! But we're all sorted now, it just means that all her clothes are a bit inappropriate for the season iygwim!

I second all in ones, but also nightgowns (girl or boy)... or anything non fiddly! Especially for those 3am feeds and changes!

Don't worry about 'clothes' like outfits, really they are just too fiddly and generally end up ruined, wait until they're a bit older...

A wrap/sling/carrier, they're great if bubs is unsettled and you have stuff to do i.e housework.

Sooooo agree with this. Changing a floppy newborn into cutesy outfits is too fiddly and since they sleep so much would u wanna sleep in jeans etc?

Babies don't need loads of toys. I think a playgym/playmat type one with toys overhead and a couple of basic things that they can chew on or hold is enough until they start wanting to move around a bit more.

Agree on the all-in-one's. That was all I dressed DD in in the first month or so.

I use the playgym everyday and try to rotate the toys so they don't get bored of the same ones and you end up having to buy new ones all the time!

If I was doing it again I would have put off buying our buggy. We hired some snap n go wheels (highly recommended) with our capsule. THen we ended up selling our buggy because we needed something different.

Invest in good bibs. They start dribbling early on and if you have a spilly baby they are an essential.

Definitely a sling.

We actually use our bath ramp every night. But you can get them fairly cheap, ours was about $8 I think, so even if you don't end up using it, it's not a waste.

Don't "stock up" on loads of creams, shampoos and wipes. Every baby has a different skin type and you may end up stocking up on a whole lot of stuff you will never use. As far as bum creams go we havent even used up the sample of benpanthen I got in my bounty pack as we haven't needed it. We are still on our first bottle of shampoo and my boy is 3. I don't use it unless I need to. And lots of babies react badly to the chemicals in the wipes even with the sensitive ones.

Definitely the old school cloth nappies - they are used for anything and everything, I have one with me at all times in and out of the house!

A play gym is a really good buy as is a bouncer (we have the old school mesh type one which is fantastic)

For sure, fancy toys are so not necessary. We have lots of rattles and things but at the moment DS is loving bubbles and balloons... both from the $2 type shop!

We don't use our bath ramp either.

Play gym is definately fantastic.

Old school cloth nappies are great for everything. Also muslin wraps, I've used them for so much.

Definately agree with kebakat re; creams and and lotions etc. We don't use anything on our boy at the moment, but I have a huge pile of samples from bounty packs etc

Some sort of sling or wrap or something is really great too, being able to be handsfree while still holding bubba.

Definately AIO and body suits. I can't get enough of them.

Booties are a waste, we got given heaps of knitted booties that last 2 sec before falling off, such a pain.

Bibs, bibs and more bibs. Some days we would go through 7 or 8 bibs with dribbles and vomit.

Our bouncer was really great in the early days too.

Hmm, thats all I can think of right now.

Everyone is different with what they need. For example: We haven't needed a baby monitor at all and don't own one whereas some people feel the sound and movement monitors are a must. My sister uses muslin cloths all the time but we hardly use ours. So you may find in asking you get a whole lot of different answers - hopefully you can pick and choose what sits well with you guys.

Anyway - here are our essentials:

Totally agree with the old flat cloth nappies! We use them for EVERYTHING (well except as nappies lol)

We use modern cloth nappies and cut up chux cloths as wipes (with water).

A baby carrier/wrap is awesome.

Big merino wrap for swaddling.

Our merino sleeping bag is also awesome.

AIO clothes are great!

I also liked having a capsule with a base.

What we haven't needed:

A bassinet or hammock (we just put DS straight into the cot).

We didn't need to buy toys or blankets - we got given them.

A baby monitor

And I wouldn't buy a mobile again - I'd just go with white noise. Mobiles are so loud and annoying! Well, our one is anyway.

That's all I can think of for now. HTH

Wish I had of done this when i was pregnant. Great lists!

ditto on the cloth old school nappies. I got a pack and used them as wraps, cot liners, spew cloths, play/change mats....etc

Also, If you are on 2 incomes at the mo, buy clothes for the next 2 sizes up as well, cause then you will have a supply once maternity leave pay has run out and you're starting to feel broke! I also splashed out on lots of cute things that I spent way too much on, but I'm glad I did in a way cause once you are on one income you just can't justify it.
Nappies! Stock up on the next few sizes as well when there is a really good special.

By yourself a really good nipple cream if you're breastfeeding and use if from day 1.

I got heaps of stuff from trade me - cot, change table, exersaucer. All really great stuff. Just spend a few weeks doing your homework and watching what things are selling for.

Oooooh, it's so exciting! It's a whole new world of shopping.......!

We have a sound and movement monitor but never use the movement part because we always forget to turn it off when we get her up so off goes the alarm when I am all comfy and feeding!

Our dd hates the music on the mobile but likes it with the noise off...

The cream thing again. I bought some lanisoh and I used it once. I'd personally just wait and see if you need it at all.

Definately stock up on clothes. We got given a lot of hand-me-down clothes (yay) and I've added to those and we are now set till he's 2, apart from a few extra bits and pieces I'll need to stock up as we go.

And the mobile is too stimulating for my boy, so I just have the radio tuned to static for his day sleeps

Essentials for us are
bassinet (bought a new mattress for each child)
snap and go wheels for the capsule were fantastic!
bouncer
jolly jumper (4mths+ though)
lots of all in ones/singlets/woollens and the smallest pair of socks i could find, the knitted booties never stay on!
old fashioned cloth naps, used them for everything
lots of blankets/wraps, you'd be amazed at how much they get puked on
a couple of bottles just in case breastfeeding goes to custard
a dummy (and when i had my first i said i would NEVER use them)

totally agree with the creams, i even threw out some that we had bought and would never use.

I have never used my lanisoh and spent $$ on the biggest tube!

I agree with buying a couple of sizes up, I got all Lily's clothes for NB, 0-3, 3-6 and a few 6-9. We've out grown NB and 0-3. Also some sizing is really weird, like 0-3 might be huge by one brand and tiny in the next.

I've still bought some cute stuff for her though but I have all the basic stuff that was a must.

I haven't read other posts, but what I find we can't live without is:

Curash

Plastic backed bibs, $1 each from the baby factory. Ignore the picture it'll get chucked on anyway.

Socks. Buy a size bigger than you think you'll need, the worst that will happen is they'll come a bit high up baby's legs. Caleb came out fitting 6mo socks

Lots of wraps / cuddle rugs. They tend to get peed or chucked on quite a lot to begin with, and will continue to be peed on every night probably.

Old fashioned flat cloth nappies. If you put one under baby in the cot you might avoid changing the sheets all the time. Again, pee and vomit.

Don't bother buying a baby bath or a bath support, our baby bath got used maybe 5 times before I just put him in the big bath with less water. And the support has never been used.

With cots, I would probably say buying a really well made cot second hand is better than a less expensive cot brand new. They may even work out the same price, but a solid NZ pine cot should last through a few kids! Also check the height of the bassinet level and the lower level. I myself like a high bassinet level, less bending over.
Do buy a new mattress though. When you see the amount of pee that goes onto one of those you'll see why

And with prams, really consider if you're ever likely to want to go across grass or gravel or even a rough footpath. My big pram is great, but only on flat surfaces. It's now the shopping buggy for mall trips only and I have a 3 wheeler which can handle bumps a bit better.

Right, it's 2am. I hope that made sense, I'm going to sleep now

I second the pram idea, I didn't realise how much I traveled on gravel etc and my pram couldn't hack it so got a second pram!

Bottles are good, even if you can bf for expressing into

This is really helpful. I have lists from the bounty pack and baby factory but it helps to hear real mum's experiences about what is actually needed (I wondered whether some of the lists provided were ploys to make money).

I'm a first time mum too expecting but the one thing people have told me is to never buy bibs without plastic backing because otherwise you're always having to change baby's clothes at the same time.

Could this be stickied?

Don't ever go to shops buy yourself, they suck you in and tell you that you need just about everything in sight! I got a capsule and was told I needed the base to use it when in fact you don't and it's a PITA, cost me an extra $70.

I don't see the point in buying one brand new. I got one 2nd hand that had minimal use, cost about half the price of a new one. It got used but not enough to justify the cost of it new. I'm not planning on getting one this time around cause like you I think I can do without it.

Oh, and I spent quite a bit of money on expensive nappy rash cream - the Doctor can give you a prescription for loads for free!
I dont't think you can have enough baby wipes!
I also stoked up on extra things for myself e.g fash wash, moisturiser, shampoo etc. I know it sounds a bit silly, but the extra on the grocery bill at the time was nothing - but it's great now we are on one income as I have a really good supply!

Oh, I got 2 boxes of breastpads (not really sure what I was thinking??!) Turns out I didn't need them at all!

Breastpump, great in the early days, but mine rarely gets used now. Just my opinion though.

Yeah like nic said, the pump was invaluable in the first 6 weeks, but now I use it once in a blue moon, and well, my boy has decided not to take a bottle now anyway.

I bought brand new, but only because we had a few BF issues in the early days so I needed it right then and there

I bought a big box of disposable breastpads and hated them, much preferred my washable ones. The sposies are still sitting in my draw

I have a manual breastpump (Avent Isis) but used a Medela Swing when in hospital when she was about 5-6weeks old and found it so much better than the manual one. TBH if I could afford the better breast pump I would express more so it would be of more use but I would advise to wait until you know you can breastfeed before you buy one, or buy a 2nd hand one on TM.

It is hard to know with bottles, breastpumps, breastpads etc. I planned on breasfeeding but had some problems and did end up buying a couple of bottles. I had already purchased a breast pump, so got into that (but then might not have needed it had I been able to BF properly). I went through tons of breastpads, and personally found the washable ones useless - it depends on how much you leak!

For bedding I found at least three sheet sets were useful, and have about four air cell blankets that I rotated. Later on we used sleeping bags, and always had at least two. We also had a 'dry cot' that went under the baby, this stopped leaks through to the mattress. We also used old fashioned cloth nappies under the baby to minimise leaks.

We used a safety sleep - not sure if we will use it this time.

It is really hard to know about baby clothes. Some babies will need newborn clothes for a couple of months, some will skip it all together. I had only a couple of outfits for newborn, and found that I could put newborn sized singlets over top of 0-3 onesies to make them fit better!

I personally didn't like the nighties for babies - didn't save any time/ laundry and the baby's legs would often kick through. I preferred pants at nighttime.

I think at a minimum of four complete outfits at any one time is needed. I say this because you may get a champion pooer (like my daughter) or if the baby gets sick you may change the baby multiple times in a row.

I tended to use all in ones - baby socks and soft baby shoes are really cute - but keep coming off!

Good luck!

Haven't read all the responses but a few things we couldn't live without:

A bouncer - soooo useful for putting baby in when your eating, having a shower, vacuuming etc, we still use hers now and sometimes feed her solids in it too.

Play gym mat thing - just a great place for them to hang out and stare at things

Bath ramp support - I personally found this really useful and only stopped using it when she was 8 months and wanted to sit up in the bath by herself

Front pack/sling/carrier - Nothing would settle her quicker than a turn in the front pack while I vacuumed (or danced to my favourite music, calmed me down a bit too )

Wraps - we used the miracle wraps - though a little expensive I just found them sooo much easier and easier for DH aswell - infact we had two of these and rarely used the other dozen or so wraps i brought!

If you are planning on breast feeding - baby nail clippers (seriously, those things are born with claws! Especially if they are overdue. And there are places you don't want to be scratched, trust me).

Lansinoh (sp?) - I only used it maybe 5 times, but it made things so much better so quickly. Even if I'd only used it once, it would have been worth the $12!

A sling/wrap. Try some first, see what feels comfortable to you if possible. I the moby, but everyone is differerent.

I didn't buy many clothes, and much of what I did buy, I haven't ended up liking. Nighties were not for me. And it's easy to pop into kmart or somewhere and grab more once you know how big your baby is and what styles you like. Plus you get given HEAPS! It was by far the most common present for us.

Flannellette sheets are better than cotton in winter - much snugglier to lie baby on. I have 4 sets and it's way too many. I've had one nappy leak in the cot ever.

I hired a breast pump for a couple of weeks to see if I'd like one, but not for me really.

Bibs I've used hundreds of (ok, maybe about 30), but I have a really spilly baby. You won't know till you meet yours if thats the case for you.

It's interesting reading everyones resposes to this.... amazing how one person can find something a necessity and the next person not...

From my experience thus far... here are my thoughts:
* Get loads of bibs! I have about 15 of them and I still run out cause they get dribbles and puked on very regularly!
* I've always used our baby bath and bath ramp. Isla is very wiggly in the bath and I like knowing that there is something else supporting her when she starts splashing around!
* Breast pump - My sister gave me her old one. Didn't realise how much I rely on it until I dropped it and broke it!
* We don't have a mobile. Isla settles much better when it is quiet.
* We got given my sisters old play gym but don't use it. I prefer to lay Isla on her mat and play with her myself.
* Also got given my sisters old Jolly Jumper and Excersaucer - don't use those either.
* we DO however have a rocker/bouncer with a toy bar. Good to pop her in when we are having dinner.
* Got given a sling but never used it. Isla hated being in it. Wouldn't have minded getting a front pack or wrap tho.
* I bought big tube of Lanisoh - I also didn't need to use it.
* Washable breastpads.... the amount of disposable ones i was going thru was costing a fortune.
* Loved our capsule altho Isla grew out of hers by the time she was 10wks old.
* I LOVE my cloth nappies. So much cheaper than disposables, plus they are kinder on bubs bum.
* Get Zinc and Castor oil cream rather than the expensive Sudocream/Bepanthan. It's only about $10 a tub from pharmacies and will last ages.
* Muslin (or oher form of) Wraps are a must
* Love having a changetable. Much better on my back then bending over on the floor.
* Wouldn't be able to live without our sound/movement monitor. It has gone off once in the middle of the night... Isla wasn't breathing. Would hate to imagine what the outcome would have been if we didn't have a monitotr.

Um... that's about it really. Altho I second what the other ladies say about not buy too many clothes. I bought heaps of NB stuff but Isla was 11lb8oz so too big for most of them from day one.

I just bite Isla's nails. We do have clippers but too afraid to use them cause every single one of the ladies in my antenatal group have chopped the ends off their babies fingers using nail clippers (they haven't choped large amounts off, just enough to make baby scream and bleed!) cause the baby wriggles too much. I find it easiest biting Isla's nails when she is feeding. I just hold onto her hand and nibble them off. She doesn't flinch

I also bite DS' fingernails - am too scared to use clippers still!

Things we couldn't live/have lived without:

Miracle blankets - we had 2 and I'm so glad, so that one was ready whilst the other was in the wash. DS wriggled out of the muslin wraps and these were houdini proof - now we wrap him only in the day ontop of his sleeping bag.

Sleeping bag - if he kicks off his blanket, doesn't matter so much as the heater is on and the sleeping bag still covers him.

Tummy tub - only because we don't have a bath. We used a baby bath and now use the tummy tub - DS loves it!

Monitor - we only use the movement bit of it, but it has been worth every penny (they are expensive). It eases our minds SO much.

Zinc & castor oil - great for nappy rash

Aqueous cream - has been FANTASTIC for DS' dry skin on his face

Drycot - this goes under the sheeting and protects the mattress

Bouncinette - DS had an absolutely terrible witching hour/colicky time between 4 & 9pm in the early days. He was so windy and the only way to get him to nod off was in this in the lounge. Also used it to pop in there when I needed a shower if I didn't manage to have one before he woke.

Jolly Jumper & exersaucer have been great

Play gym and a play mat

Old style Cloth nappies for sure - for burp cloths, change mat when out - so many uses!

Oh a few more things that I've thought of!

Definitely the Snap n Go Wheels - we just clicked in the capsule and off we go - we also have a Mountain Buggy and this only gets used for walks (will become the main pram in a month or so, when DS is out of the capsule).

Capsule with base - I have loved this! No need to worry about wrapping the seatbelt up (esp if it is raining) - just click it on the base and all done.

Miracle wraps are fantastic! Lily only sleeps swaddled but will always get herself out of any other wrap.

i havent read much of the other sutff.... but....

- a capsule with a base (leave the base in your car and no problems fiddling with the seatbelt (new - or hired) (most baby stores hire them out, as do plunket)

- a playgym with the hanging toys (and space to add more, or take them off) that can be easily washed. one that converts for tummy time is great (2nd hand is fine, just wash it first)

- we have a jolly jumper and an exersaucer (were given the JJ and the exersaucer was REALLy cehap 2nd hand off trade me) and our boy has amazing head control and loves them! perfect if you trying to make lunch or need a shower

- dont worry about "clothes" for NBs - but defo reccommend the all-in-ones/growsuits with feet, and fold over cuffs. Kmart is really good for cheap ones - they grow out of them so quickly!

- a sling or wrap (i have a moby a LOVE it) fantastic if you are going somewhere its hard to get a pram around (shopping) or if you dont have much time

- we have only used our baby bath once - either me or DP just takes him into the shower with us

- a quick read digital thermometer (for baby)

- some lightweight (muslin is good) wraps and some heavyweight wraps (merino is fantastic)

i 2nd the baby factory list .. im due in 8 weeks and have found it really helpfull to working out what me and dp felt were important.
also find out if any close family memebers have planned to buy any of the 'big stuff' we were 2 steps ahead and brought it all and then found out people atucally wanted to buy it for us.
and double check if 2nd is atucally cheaper .. i have found with all the sales farmers etc you can quite often pick up things at 1/2 prices as to buying on trademe postage etc. also baby factory let you layby sale items!!!
IMO don't listen to what everyone says about don't buy this don't buy that .. buy it if you want to buy it!!!!!
