I kinda feel like there are two schools of thoughts out there when babies cry/scream and are unsettled:
- those that mostly attribute it to wind, and
- those that mostly attribute it to being overtired
As the mum of a 1 month old baby - I have no idea!!!!
My baby has quite a few unsettled/screaming/crying times and I can't tell if it's wind or being overtired, therefore I don't know whether to keep trying to bring burps up (or bring more burps up if I've already managed a couple) or keep him in his moses basket and keep trying to get him off to sleep.
Is there any way of knowing????

Only way you could safely assume wind over tiredness is if they are sleeping lots?
Usually they have wind if between their upper lip & nose is blue. If it's not then there's no wind stuck.

He's definitely not sleeping a lot, only 2.5 hours so far today although other days are better.
I've never been able to distinguish the blueness above the upper lip.....
Are there any other sure signs that wind is the problem and not over tiredness?

Have you ever thought about trying the Dunstan Baby Language? My Mum heard about it on Oprah ages ago and suggested I try it for DS when he was born and I was in the same boat as you. I thought it was fantastic, here's the link to more about it: http://dunstanbabylanguage.com/ - Dunstan Baby Language
Sorry, not a quick fix but just another thought!

Love this site!!
From experience wind pain is more likely to be if baby pulling there legs up or arching their backs after a feed
Try burping half way through a feed or a couple of times during a feed
Hope that helps
found this too

I'd say tired. You might be keeping him up to long? Some babies are tired once they've finished their feed, a 5 min cuddle & back to sleep could be in order??

If you've got wind out, then chances are he is over tired. Mine always get to the overtired stage very quickly.
Do you use a dummy because even if he is windy then that usually help settle tummys. Also I think most little ones can get sore tummys in the beginning as their digestive system starts to settle down.
Infacol (supermarket) helps to get up wind as does colimed (chemist) and colimed contains cammomile that helps to settle them. Gripe water can help (supermarket) also.
I've always found the 5 s's (swadling, sucking, shushing, swaying, & side lying) helps to settle an overwrought baby, if you look up Dr Harvey Karp on You-tube you'll find videos showing how to settle newborns this way.
Unfortunately babies cry and some cry more than others, and though sometimes there is a good reason for it, a lot of the time they are just crying and you can drive yourself mad trying to figure out what is wrong. It is a stage that passes and it does get easier.
ETA also if I feel that I haven't got all the wind up I will sometimes elevate the head of the bassinet with telephone books so that he has a better chance of getting it up himself.

I'd say at 1 month old if you've got a decent burp up (or a few small ones) then it's most likely tiredness. Try putting him straight down again after a cuddle, a feed and another quick settling cuddle. Be prepared for a bit of crying when you put him down, but usually that's just a protest at not being cuddled and he should go to sleep.
When C was 1 month old I was still completely clueless, but not long after that it somehow all fell into place and I became much better at guessing what he wanted. Sometimes though they're just in a bad mood!

My wee man was pretty unsettled until aboiut 6 weeks. He would cry if I put him down, and I had no idea if it was wind or hunger as were werent in any kind of routine at that age. I also found the wind pretty hard to get up at that age.
Sorry not much help but it does get easier

Try getting him into a routine - it really helps you to understand what your baby is crying about. At this age, the 1hr up, 2hrs down rule is a guideline. The 1hr up is awake time which includes: a feed, a nappy change, a little bit of play time on the floor including tummy time for as long as tolerated (even lying on your tummy counts and so does 30secs of it!). It could also include nappy-off time and bathing and a little top up feed before going back down to bed.
This is to coincide with 3hrly feeding. When they're in this routine, you have more of an idea about what they are crying about, ie. hunger, sleep, nappy. When you've ruled those out, then you know it could be wind or too hot/too cold etc.
When babies have wind they often get a little bit blue around the mouth or bring their knees up towards their chest.
Hope that helps!

NB: Not all babies manage the 1hr up/2hrs down rule... but it's a goal to work towards. They have a sleep cycle of 45 mins so try and get him back off to sleep after he wakes up around the 30-45min mark and he'll usually sleep for another 45-60mins or thereabouts.

The 3 hourly routine Newlywed mentioned really worked well for me.
The other thing that I found helped me a lot was following the feed/play/sleep cycle. I was never very good at working out what Toby's different cries meant (and I still struggle sometimes), but when I followed feed/play/sleep I would just look at where we were up to in the cycle and could usually work out what he wanted from there. When he wakes up, feed him, then have a play and when he shows tired signs, put him down to sleep. When he wakes up, repeat the cycle.
The information on tired signs on the Sleep Store website that rasberryjam posted is great. Once I worked out his tired signs and put him straight to bed when I saw them, life became a lot easier!
