Hi just wondering if there is anyone else out there that has been diagnosed with unexplained infertility. I am 29 and DH 27 and we have been TTC for 2 1/2 years now. We have been to Fertility Associates in Auckland and they have done their standard tests and said we have unexplained infertility. We have tried several treatments such as Clomid and IUI with none being sucessful. We are currently on the IVF public funded waiting list which will be approx one year to wait. I have regular monthly cycles and DH has good sperm count.
Just interested to see how many other people are out there in the same situation as us, and what other tests can be done to try and find out what could be the cause of this infertility.

your blurb sounds just like us! except for the ages that is!
we are with FA also - have done clomid and IUI and now leaning towards IVF - totally unexplained and yet had only 6 months of trying for our DD (now aged 3.3Yrs).
all the best....

Hi Bombshell, thanks for replyinh. Glad to know we arent the only ones out there. I have chatted to lots of ladies on here but it seems they all have reasons as to why they are having trouble TTC.
Did you conceive DD naturally after 6 months of trying? But now you are having problems with TTC #2, is this correct? Who are you seeing at FA? Have they got you to do any tests to see what is causing the infertility? Thats one thing which annoys me at FA, they do their standard tests but if all come back fine then they say last resort is IVF, they dont actually help you to get to the bottom of the problem. I have decided to go see a Natropath to try get some answers there.

Hi Tiff8ny
We are the same (although 5 years of trying to get our son - now 11 mths and now trying for our second).
Unexplained fertility is quite common (I think about 30% of couples with fertility problems).
Sometimes even very small hormonal imbalances which wouldn't be detected by standard medical tests can have an impact on fertility so a naturopath is a good idea. Acupuncture is also good and has some proven results in studies. Also, a good clean diet with plenty of fruit and veg and limited sugar, preservatives etc and no alcohol, caffeine, tobacco can make a difference. Good luck!

Hi mountain girl, thanks for all that advice! Will defin try and follow that and see what happens and I am in the process of trying to see a natropath which I think should help us.
Wow 5 years TTC - that must of been so hard! How did you do it, I have struggled and its only been 2 1/2 years so far for us. If you dont mind me asking did you just fall pregnant after 5 years of trying or were you on some other form of treatment to conceive.

Hi Tiff8ny, we conceived via IVF although not because of unexplained infertility. Just thought I'd mention Brad Crouch if you are thinking of going down the naturopath route - he specialises in infertility treatment via naturopathy. Not sure where you are located though - he is in Browns Bay, Auckland.

hi tiff8ny
it took us over 4 years to concieve DS1. we ended up concieving him naturally. But i have since seen an excellent naturopath.
i would highly recommend motherwell natural health they specialise in mothers, babies, infertility e.t.c.
The naturopath rebekah is excellent and can help with fertility issues. With her help it only took us 6 months to conceive DS2. Using herbs and sticking to a good diet.
they have a website and are based in mt eden.
good luck

Hi Yummymummy 2, thanks for the reply. Did you have any reasons why it took you over 4 years to conceive? Hard to beleive after 4 years of TTC and nothing happened that it can happen just like that, that is really insiring thank you for sharing - it gives me some hope yet
I have looked up Loula at Natural Fertility-Womens Health which I think is the same place as Motherwell in Mt Eden. They seem to be well known. I need to get our tests results from Fertility Associates, do you know if they give these out? At the time they just told us over the phone everything was good but nothing on paper. But need to get test results for the naturopath.

HI Tiff8ny,
We had unexplained infertility and it took us 2 years to get pregnant. We are going to try again soon for our 2nd so fingers crossed it doesnt take as long!
I went to F+ via public and also was booked to see FA privately (for IUI) to hurry things up (Im 35y now).
I didnt have clomid as there was no reason why I needed it so they said no point in trying it.
I had a laproscopy to see what was going on in there (no problems found) and a dye put through my tubes at the same time. Within a couple of months I was pregnant. I think my tubes had a good flush out and if i have probs this time, i will try to get the dye put through again for a clean out.
Unexplained can be so hard as there is no reason given, so you just don't know. It sux and I also found it hard finding someone else who had unexplained as most people i spoke to had a reason and were on the IVF list alot quicker than I was, which is fair enough but was hard to deal with at the time as there wasnt much I could try and it was horrible to hear the "just keep trying, it will happen one day" spiel. I got lots of support from OB and there is an infertility thread incase you havent seen it.
Good luck hun, I hope you don't have to wait too much longer!!

Hi, I just wanted to share this with just in case you gain some value from it.
I am 29 and have a regular cycle of 30 days. I was TTC for 12 months and was just starting to go down the FA path. Just when I got the referral I finally got my first ever BFP. The only thing that changed was that the previous month I changed jobs...from shift work (night and day) to a regular mon-fri 9am-5pm job.
I have no doubt that my crazy work hours was the cause of why it took us 12 months to conceive and my GP agrees.
This is just an example where the cause was not something medical but more physical. I'm not suggesting this is you, but just sharing in case this helps anyone. As if I had had it suggested to me, I would have changed jobs asap as I only stayed there as long as I did because I was entitled to maternity leave! Ironic huh?!
I really hope your wait isn't too much longer

Hi pikelets, thanks for your reply. Its really good for me to know that there are others out there that had unexplained infertility and had babies naturally. Thats really a positive thing for me to know as at the moment I feel like its never going to happen!
I have had the dye put through my tubes to see if there is any blockages but there wasnt any. They never sent me to get a laproscopy though which I am wondering now why they didnt. I totally understand what you mean with the waiting for unexplained infertility, esp when they say for public funding you have to have been trying for 5 years before you can get any treatment - its such a long time to wait & to be dissapointed every month when it doesnt happen and yet people with problems get through faster. And your right I get sick of the "dont worry it will happen" spiel too and esp cause they all say we are still young! All the best for TTC #2, I really hope that this time is alot quicker for you!
Thanks also Bobsta for your reply. I know what you are meaning, I think it comes down to stress sometimes. And I have tried to remove the stress problems out of my life and hopefully this will make a difference, however the not being able to conceive makes things very stressful each month. I am going to see a naturopath soon so hopefully that should help with that.
Did you lose your baby?? I am really sorry if you have, and hope that this time trying is alot quicker for you
It is so good to know that there are others like me that I can talk to and get this great advice

hi there T!
DH and I have been trying for 18mths, this is our 17th cycle.
we're in the unexplained infertility at the mo but are undergoing procedures to see if we can find out why we are conceiving. dh's sperm count is all good. i've had ultrasounds, the hsg (dye) xray and am currently waiting on going in for a hysterscopy (a camera into my cervix) and laproscopy to see if they can see what's going on. i'm just starting cloimd this cycle in the hope that will work and i won't have to do the surgeries!
best of luck with your journey hun, it's so frustrating. i truly hope you get your bfp very soon.

Hi mollymoo, thanks for the reply. You sound like us so far. Are you going through Fertility Associates? If you dont mind me asking do you have regular periods? I am wondering why they havent sent me for a hysterscopy and laproscopy. They told me to have the HSG but not the others. Strange
Good luck for you with Clomid, I tried that but sadly it didnt work but FX for you that you get a positive result with it! Please keep me posted on your clomid journey.
It is defin a frustrating time knowing that its unexplained!!

Hi T thanks for posting this thread, as you can see there are lots of us out there with unexplained infertility and it really helps me to be able to talk to others who understand how hard this journey is.
I'm nearly 36 and my DH is 37 and we've been TTC our first baby for at least 2 1/2 years, but TBH I've lost track of how long it is, seems like forever. I'm with FA now and have had a laparoscopy and dye (all completely normal) and numerous BTs which seemed to confirm I was ov'ing normally. It's only in the last few months that the CD21 BTs have shown that I might not be, so I'll be starting Clomid next cycle.
I would definitely recommend going to see a naturopath, I've been taking pre-conception vitamins for nearly two months that my naturopath prescribed via an Australian clinic (check out http://www.fertility.com.au/) and they seem to be helping my hormone levels and general health.
I've found charting my temps and other fertility signs have been really helpful, as are OPKs that I've just started using. You're very welcome to join us in the Charting Girls thread anytime!
Otherwise writing a diary, exercise, yoga, counselling and the support of friends and family and the lovely ladies on OB have been the best ways of managing the TTC rollercoaster ride for me.
All the best and I hope you get your BFP really soon

Hi Anja22, yes i pop into the charting girls thread every now & then. I have only started charting & using OPK this cycle which has really helped me so might get involved with that thread also. I need to set up a FF chart so I have my charts all online, it seems really useful.
I understand about how hard the journey is, it is very frustrating being told its unexplained infertility yet nothings happening after 2 years of TTC so then I assume something is wrong that they havent picked up on
I have booked in a Naturopath appointment with Sherran at Motherwell in Mt Eden for 9th July so counting down until that now and hopefully they can help us to conceive naturally and we dont have to go down the IVF path next year (FX).
I really love all the support & chat that goes with OB, I think these forums are such a great idea and helps you understand that your not the only one going through this journey of not being able to conceive, plus it gives you hope hearing sucess stories.
All the best for your Clomid! I really hope you get your BFP really soon too

Hi, we had unexplained fertility and conceived our son after 20 mths.
I had a laparoscopy and dye because l have painful periods and was diagnosed with mild endo. However l was told this wasn't significant enough to affect my fertility so was in the unexplained group.
I finally had a Lipiodol flush with Neil Johnson from Fertility+. It is a simple proceedure where they flush your tubes with Lipiodol. I was pregnant 2 months later. Might be worth talking to him about it.
Good luck, it is a really difficult journey to be on. I hope you have a very happy ending soon.

I have not heard of Lipiodol flush before. I am with Fertility Associates and they have not suggested this to me. So I will look this up and check with them if this is worth me getting it done and how much is it. Sounds like it did the trick for you which is awesome!

You can always give Fertility+ a call and ask Neil Johnson to call you. He is a lovely guy and the proceedure really is his baby so to speak.
Even some of the other Dr's at Fertility+ don't think to recommend it for some strange reason. Bear in mind that FA will be trying to keep your business so may not be keen to recommend you hop to the opposition IYKWIM.
The one thing i learned was that you have to be very pro-active when you have unexplained infertility in particular. Research your options and ask, ask, ask!

It does cost $900 to get it done privately but Im thinking it will defin be worth it if it works. Seems like its a similar procedure to the HSG which I have already have and came back all clear.
And knowing you got a positive result from it gives me some hope. I will let you know when I can get it done and how I get on

This is what I had with my laproscopy and it worked for us too. They said they had a study or research going on and it had a good percentage of unexplained fertility cases fall pg after this procedure. Seemed to work for us - could be coincidence but if we don't have joy this time, will be looking at the same thing.
I just googled and found this http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17890725

Hey, we tried for 18 months for our bubs, I had super regular cycles and DH had great sperm lol. The specialist suspected that I had a polyp in my womb so had a lap to have a look but there was nothing, apparently one of my ovaries was a bit stuck but he said it would have only been making a difference of 5%. Also a couple of months before he put me on metformin to help with weight loss ( I was a little roundy but not really round), so I also joined Jenny Craig to lose a few kgs thinking it wouldn't hurt, and we decided to get married early (last August instead of this Jan just gone) so wanted to be thin for wedding...we were going for the cheap wedding so we could save fo IVF.
Anyway, about a month after my lap I got my BFP!!
So in all honesty, I have no idea if anything made any difference or if it was just the right time...could have been
a. lap and dye clearing out tubes
b. ovary getting wriggled about
c. losing a few kgs
d. not thinking about it too much and deciding on making plans for other things. (ie 'relax' as everyone tried to say.
So you know, sometimes it does just happen and you won't know WHY it happened. I really hope it does just happen for you soon too.
Also want to say that during the few months we were under specialist care he certainly was not suggesting straight to ivf. I had internal ultrasounds at various times of the month to look at follicle sizes, different blood tests, and also a check to see if i had hostile cervical mucus. then of course he had me on metformin because it wouldnt hurt and the next move was to do clomid. so seems perhaps that they are rushing into the ivf tho at the same time might not hurt to get on waiting list. Tho of course the unexplained infertility is the lowest of the low right....and that really puzzles me coz you would think that perhaps they might have a good outcome if nothing else is wrong???
anyway, good luck!! it is so worth the wait to have my little boy here and i am sure that you will get to experience the joy as well. it is lovely checking out the infertility forum to see the lovely ladies one by one get their BFP, tho i have not lurked on there for ages.

Thanks TaliP for your reply. Yes I think your right, sometimes it just does happen and you have no idea why! To me it seems like they havent investigated us enough and gone straight to IVF but your right, it doesnt hurt to get onto the waiting list -which we are now but it is 18 months long! So we are hoping in the 18 months to come to be proactive to try and suss out whats wrong if anything. Booked in to see a naturopath next month, they do further investigatins that FA dont do, plus they can give your natural herbs etc that may help us. Also booking in to have a lipidol flush which FX may help, it is very expensive but will be well worth it if it works and it is a damn site cheaper and less evasive than IVF.
Congrats on your lil boy, must be such an exciting & joyful time getting a BFP after trying for so long. Hopefully one day (soon) I get to experience that joy too

Hi Tiff8ny
We tried to concieve for 4 years, were diagnosed with unexplained infertility with Fertility Associates in Wellington after umpteen tests. 3 failed IUI's later we qualified for government funded IVF which eventually resulted in DD (who is 11 months now).
I was trying to loose weight so we could try and use our one and only frozen embryo (that we got through IVF) when ta da.....naturally pregnant with basically no trying. So next Feb we will have two kids 17 months apart and while IVF and being a human guinea pig is no fun it is so worth it in the end.
I think the worst part of unexplained infertility is there is no reason, there is nothing and no one to blame....its fricken frustrating!
Wishing you all the best for a BFP soon!

Wow Tiff8ny, would love to hear how you go on Tueday and what the procedures like, do you mind me asking how much it costs?
As you can see from my ticker we have the dreaded "unexplained infertility", man do I hate those words.
I was halfway through our last TER just a couple of weeks ago and FA called me in for a scan and they found what they thought was a fibroid, so I was booked for op to remove it Tuesday just been.
But the Dr who did the surgery couldn't find anything, but she did decide whilst I was there and out of it anyway, to check for endo and flushed my tubes.
Hopefully from reading above this may be just the thing we needed.
Good luck on Tuesday!

Hi ScaredyCat, thanks for your post. It costs $225 for a consultation appointment with Neil Johnson and then the Lipiodol Flush is $900. Sounds really expensive BUT so worth it if it works. He said with unexplained his trials have showed that 1/3 of women got pregnant after the lipiodol flushing. It is also less evasive and cheaper than IVF (which is our next option) so we thought what have we got to lose really!
Will defin let you know how I go. They said pregnancy sucess rates can be anywhere from 1-12months after the flush, so heres hoping its all we need to get UTD.
Good luck for you too, hopefully by flushing out your tubes that may have helped you. I see you have been TTC since 2004, sounds like you really deserve that BFP and sticky bean!

Hi Tiff8ny,
i just joined this forum to wish you good luck!!!!
We went to Fertility + for our 1st appointment just yesterday....and after the dr said that the waiting list is around 3 years for treatment...i just cried and cried.
And even isnt a nice thing to realize, there are lots of couples as us with this unexplained infertility....
So now waiting for the HSG and in 3 months time the next appointment I'm seriously thinking to ask for the IUI, more affordable than IVF.
Really hope that you have good result with the flush

Hi scaredy cat, no there is no wait list to get the flush done. Neil Johnson in auckland is the only one who does it though (I think). He was so good and did everything he could to fit me in next week. He does it on Day 12 or before. He is doing mine on Day 9.
Thanks for your post Winilla, yes the waiting lists are so hard to get your head around esp for unexplained. We have nearly been TTC for 3 years until we got onto the IVF waiting list and now have another year to wait. I have been trying to keep myself busy so that the time passes quickly.
I would defin recommend asking about IUI. It is alot cheaper and less evasive than IVF and also they can do it straight away so theres no waiting around and it could be all that you need to get UTD! sadly it didnt work for us but FX it could be all you need.

Hi ScaredyCat, it went well thanks. It was slightly painful like a really bad crampy feeling but otherwise he said it went like text book and the lipiodol spread through the tubes like it should do. So I guess now its just wait and see what happens! I am so hoping that this does the trick for us. They were doing 4 yesterday and they said it is quite a popular thing to do now.

Excellent news Tiff8ny, I'm glad to hear it went text book like! Now to sit back and see what happens. Will be thinking of you, good luck!
I've decided to try al la natural for the next couple of months too, both my Natropath and IVF Dr have suggested it after having the endo removed and tubes flushed.
Fingers crossed for us both, huh. I look forward to hearing any updates!

just thought i would add my 2 cents ... my sister tried for 4 years with unexplained fertility, she had her tubes flushed (it's covered in australia under medical insurance), the dr told her at the time that about 75% of his patients with no other issues got pregnant within 3 months of having it done ... and on the 3rd month she got pregnant (and that was nearly 10 years ago) ...

Yeah that sounds like a good plan Tiff8ny, I'm still waiting for clearance from my Dr after surgery, waiting, waiting, waiting and with the IVF drugs and surgery this month, have no idea where my cycle is up to, but bring on next month!
At least you had the procedure done at the right end of the month, wouldn't it be a dream come true to work this month, fingers crossed for you!
Thank you so much Choco69 for sharing your sisters positive story, thats fantastic, gives us more hope!

you're welcome ladies
meant to also say with my sister the next 2 pregnancies after that she had no problems conceiving, took a couple of months each time, so guess her body just had to figure out what it needed to be doing
good luck ladies, will be watching out for your BFPs
