My friend is having some difficulty so I just found out and I'm trying to come up with an option/s for her btu I can't actually think of any 
What can she do about getting her girl (5) to school given the following... She is disabled in a wheelchair, she was able to drive with a special kinda car but she has had an accident so is physically not able to do this anymore. She can't walk her girl to school because they live down a country road with plenty of blind corners so pretty dangerous for an average person to stroll down let alone a 5 year old and mum in wheelchair. So that also rules out biking to school also. She doesn't have family and no friends around cause shes very new to the area. I'm one of the closest and I'm basically 2 hrs away. Being in the country theres no public transport so thats a no go. I thought of taxi but thats ok for the odd day but its not a longer term solution. I just can't think of how she can do it? I don't know much about what disabled people are entitled to as far as extra help goes. Anyone know where we could find out? |

If it was an accident, is she under ACC? Her case manager should be a port of call and may well be able to help with this. ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

My suggestion would be to ask the school first. There maybe someone who lives close to her that might be willing to take the child to school for a small cost. ------------- Mr Mellow (16) Miss Attitude (8) Destructa Kid (3)

The other thing is linking her in with a Needs assessment service. Call the Ministry of Health to find the local one - 0800 DSD MOH (0800 373 664). Given there's a mix of physical disability and acquired disability, there may be some dispute between ACC and MOH as to who funds what, and what is funded differs in each region. Another source of information is the Disability Info Service www.nzfdic.org.nz 0800 NZFDIC (0800 693 342) who could also give you advice on where to go.

Is this your friend with the pool problems?
She definitely will be entitled to help. I also wonder if there is a rural school bus? I know at the college I went to a couple of years ago they had a taxi that was free of charge for the special needs kids, I wonder if there would be something similar for her seeing as she can't physically take her kid to school... Thanks girlys, since I'm not up to school age yet with Daniel I was a little stumped but I've passed on the ideas so I hope she gets back to school soon

Also ask the school. Alot of schools provided Taxi services & bus services for specific children. they may be able to help -------------
