Does anyone live right on anintersection? We are looking at a house which is a corner section and is right next to an intersection. Even though it's not overly busy, I wondered if you notice the cars slowing down and taking off at the intersection? Does it annoy you?

The bedrooms face the road and the house is on a main road. We are living on the same road at the moment but we're down a right of way, so don't really notice the traffic noise.
We never hear any boy racers, so there wouldn't be many noisy cars going through it.
It's really the only thing worrying us about the house, apart from that I LOVE it.

Thanks

We have always either lived on quiet streets and often down long driveways too so I am used to sleeping in silence. When Ive stayed at other places that are a bit nosier I find it so hard to sleep, so I guess you get used to it? I stayed with a friend who lives in the city and couldnt sleep, but she thought it was fine.

I grew up in a house on a busy road and it was a corner section so not really an intersection but we still got a lot of traffic. You get used to the noise, we found going away it was hard sleeping the first night because it was so quiet. Out of town visitors found it hard sleeping because of the noise. We had a big section so tended to play on the section or up the side street. Just bear in mind that your kids will want to ride bikes, scooters, rollerblade etc so you need to think of how safe it is for them being right on an intersection.

I grew up on a very busy Auckland main road and apart from peak traffic times never really noticed the traffic it was quiet at night and us kids bedrooms were towards the back of the house - with the master bedroom and lounge towards the front.
The property was fully fenced and we had a driveway the length of the house so had plenty of room to ride our bikes etc.

I found it strange adjusting to the quiet when I first moved away. My Dad now lives in the bush and I find the noises from that more scary than traffic.

grew up in Brisbane on a main road which was 2 lanes each way and 200m up the road from a quarry. you get used to the noise. as long as it has a goodd sturdy fence (for when your little one can run around outside) and you love it, i reckon go for it! we had no problems with it. good luck!!!

We live about 300m down from a round-a-bout, it used to be just a regular intersection though and we do notice the traffic a lot. Although it is just a regular street a lot of boy racers do tend to use it as a thorough-fare though which definately increases the noise, especially Friday and Saturday nights. But, even during the day and on a Sunday etc it is still fairly noisy. Our lounge and bedroom are at the front of the house.

As a kid we used to live on the main road into town and apart from the odd truck and noisy car we never really noticed the vehicle noise, you do tend to get used to noises like that. Mum had planted a heap of trees at the front of the property though to cut down on the noise, if that is an option for you it could work

ETA - I'm a really light sleeper and most noises do wake me up, especially now having a little one

The traffic noise is of concern but the freakiest thing for me living on a main road was the people walking and talking. It would sound like they were right outside your bedroom window. Especially at night when the cars are quiet and some people were walking home from a party. I just felt a bit vulnerable really. Does it have a big fence? Otherwise the traffic you do get used to. We even had the st johns ambulance just across the road too. My worry would also be little kids getting out on the road. With a long driveway you have more time to get them. It only takes a blink of an eye with a gate open for them to escape. Are you buying or renting. Buying I would go for a long term option and find a quiet street. Renting try it out and if it works then great if not then move on.

Where I live there are a lot of school age kids playing in the street and people drive slowly down our street as it is not the main drag. I will never live on a busy intersection with two young children even if the house was nice. Both Dh and I love our bedrooms to be at the back of the house and the living areas in the front.

TBH, I think you'd get used to it. I was peeved when the place next to us sold & then 4 houses put on with a right of way next to us. Now I don't noticed the cars coming & going but I used to.

Things I would think of is that it will feel less private in your back yard unless you have high fences with very close slats. Also if you have a dog will they have access to two street sides or not. Cause it will drive you insane with them thinking everyone is coming on their section.

You can do sound proof planting on the inside of the fence to deaden sound. We live on a main road & I'm so used to the traffic noise now & my bedroom is in the front of the house.

Arrrange a go through at around 3-3.30 pm on a weekday, that is high flow time or 5-5.30pm.

We're on a corner section, not a particularly busy road but I do notice the cars slowing down and then starting again. It used to annoy me a little but not anymore. Before that I lived down a right of way so there was no traffic noise at all. Before that I lived in London where it was noisy 24/7 and I got used to that.

As long as you're happy with the safety factor I'd go for it.

Hmmm all very interesting.
We are in Cambridge, so you can imagine our 'busy' compared to Auckland 'busy' or any other city.
While it's a main road, it's still not as busy as you would imagine a main road to be.

The safety thing is interesting and something I hadn't really thought about. It has a big backyard and will be fully fenced for our dog, so the kids can safely play there. It has a small driveway, but wouldn't let the kids ride their bikes on it as it's almost right on the road. The driveway is actually on the 'other' road (not the main road), and is a really quiet road, and the streets are nice and quiet to go for walks.

We are planning to go through Thursday morning, so I might just stay in the lounge and listen to the traffic. I doubt it's a busy intersection, maybe a car every 5 mins on average (at a guess).

I think it is something I would just get used to. I'm not overly sensitive to traffic noise (lived in London for 3 years), and I've lived on a very busy main road before in Welly.

Hey Jaxnz1, I'm in Cambridge too - you can pm whereabouts the house is you are looking at is so I could give you a more definate opinion if you like? The other thing to consider is how safe the intersection is - ie if there would be lots of accidents?

we live on a really really busy road with a side street right across the road. people speed and fly round the bend by our house and boy racers make heaps of noise. the boys bedroom in right at the front of the house and when ppl pull up in the side street the light shines into the curtains lighting up the room before they rev up and fly around the corner. Mack sleeps right through cos he has always been in there and it doesnt bother us either. you totally get used to it. the good thing about it is that normal household noises like slamming doors and flushing toilets dont wake him either cos they cant be heard over the traffic. lmao. the only problem we have is trying to pull out of our driveway when it is really busy beacuse we are just round a bend so you have to plant your foot and pray but we havent had an accident yet

we used to live on the corner of an intersection - it wasn't busy BUT while the cars didn't annoy me, in 18 months there were 4 crashes - and this was a corner that was well lit, easy to see all ways. And the accidents weren't fatal, but all required the fire engines to cut them out. drove me insane
