I think I've spelt Montesori wrong sorry lol but just wondered if there's any parents here who currently send or are planning to send their kids to either of these schools? We have a Montesori kindy and primary school locally which I am looking into but there are also Steiner schools within travelling distance. I know there is a different philosophy behind each one so am not lumpng them together outside the fact they are (I guess) 'alternative' schools. I will be sending my kids to a Steiner school if I am close enough to one. My brother and sisters all went to one and they loved it. I like the philosophies behind Steiner, and prefer that to the idea of main stream schooling.

That's interesting Kellie- why did they love it if I could ask? My cousins went and my mum led me to believe it was realy hippy dippy but from what I've seen I think I might actually prefer it to Montesori? They were a fairly alternative family lol but still.... I have to say that I've had a lot of contact through my old work with kids who went to both schools and I gotta say they were almost without exception polite, well adjusted and sensitive to the world and people around them.,....which I loved! ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

No montessori is more of child led form of education.. you dont have to be gifted at all...
If I can Jake will be going to a Montessori kindy have not looked into primary school as I dont think we will still be in NZ then, but if there is one nearby that isnt crazy expensive where we are in aust then he will go there too. I know a little of Steiner and its not really for me, much prefer the Montessori way. Emmecat DH went to the Steiner school in Lower Hutt and his mum taught the kindergarten class there for 10 years.

We wanna send Daniel to montessori but they have to be fully TT before going and Daniel isn't there yet. I like that they encourage independance and when I rang them along with kindys and compared with daycare kindys basically told me they played with some mat time. Montessori told me this huge long list of activities that they did and I knew what they do at daycare.
I think the best way is just go along for a morning or afternoon and sit around and watch what goes on. |

My DD is going to a montessori kindy, I am hoping to get her into it soon (with no 2 due in oct I wanted her settled in by then)... We've been for a few visits and its great.. Love the way the older kids help out the younger ones, we walked in and 2 older boys came over and took DD away and showed her around... I would def agree with the others to go and have a look. The main thing I liked about it was it wasn't manic like a 'mainstream' kindy and they learn to respect things and other people.. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| I would have loved to send my kids to either of those schools. I researched both when I was at teacher's college and loved what i read....loved it so much i can't remember any of it right now. wish we had the option though as for Taine I think the routines would have been great. |

Lucy and Zoe both go to Montesorri (casa dei bambini) here in Christchurch and I must say that we have noticed a huge difference in their learning and the way the do things.

Wow that's fantastoc feedback so far- thanks guys C&J- I'm quite familiar with the Steiner school in Lower Hutt and yeah that's where I know a few college aged kids from...and they are SUCH nice kids, so respectful and aware IYKWIM? But still normal lol. I guess there's nothing wrong with having a look at the local Montesori kindy for Clodagh and then if we move look at Steiner cos I'm pretty sure there's nothing really close to where we are now. Lily is booked to start Montessori in 2011 (age 3). We had our 'interview' (parent visit basically) last Sep and I got the last spot for next year, our local one has a wait list so here you generally need to be in contact with them before baby's 1st birthday! Hopefully she will be able to get in a term earlier when she turns 3. We did have to agree that she would stay until age 6 in order to get a definite spot. As I will still be at home she will just go 5 mornings a week and it is covered under the 20 free hours. I have a few friends with Montessori kids and they can't say enough about how brilliant it is. I was really impressed with the whole setup and the environment etc when we went. I'm really excited for her and hope that she enjoys it too.
As an aside, my sister teaches New Entrant/Year 1's and she said Montessori kids are generally ahead academically when they start school but then the others soon catch up by the end of the year. My impression was that it is mainly learning through play, so they don't have free-play. I plan to make sure we do a lot of dress ups and arty stuff in the afternoons  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

This is really interesting - I hadnt thought of Montessori, but there is a daycare very close to DHs work. I might look into it for when Hunter is no longer BF. When I go back to work Ill put in him the onsite daycare until he is atleast 1 year. I would like to go and visit it though. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I don't have experience with Montesorri. Dh went to Steiner school for primary and intermediate and he seems to have received a well rounded education and he's a good reader. They also learn the violin from an early age too. ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow"> [/url] Angel June 2012 |
