just wondering what other people do with their bunnies in this horrible weather... we have moved ours inside cos it's just so cold out there but dunno if this is ott or not ?? are they ok outside with lots of hay?? ------------- mum to 3 lovely girls :D |

My grandma used to have bunnies and she would bring them inside - she thought it was mean! Then again she knitted them jumpers too  . Word of warning though - hers chewed the fridge wires but somehow managed to miss being electrocuted!  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| We put them in the bathroom when we had the other extreme. Saudi arabia in the summer. 50 degrees celcius so no airconditioning meant roasted rabbit. They are easy to toilet train with a litter box. Find where they pee. (hopefully on lino or tile) Put some cat litter on it to soak it up and then sweep it into the litter box. Clean up spot and put the box on top and presto trained in 5 mins. But they do eat everything. Chewed thru the plastic container with food and also chewed all the veneer off the door. Ate the toilet brush. (nice) Heard about chewing the wires and we had wild rabbits in Texas chew our satelite wires. Also our christmas light wires were fair game to the rabbits. |

Haha Nkap - I won't be knitting jumpers anytime soon!
I often bring them in for a bit - but tonight I brought them in in their cage ... they are toilet trained but we have a cat and dog that are a bit too keen on them
Wow kiwi2 bunnies in SA!! so far ours haven't chewed threw anything but given time I sure they will... ------------- mum to 3 lovely girls :D |

I was told by the SPCA that they can stay out all winter BUT you have to choose and stick to it. So if you are going to bring them in during the winter you always have to bring them in during the winter as they wont be used to the cold.
Ours are staying out, they have lots of hay.. plus they are angora crosses so very fluffy jackets to keep them warm. Oh and I guess some more food than summer as they will need more to keep warm if they are out in the cold.... -------------

I was just thinking about this very question today lol. Not that I have bunnies But I wanted to get the girls one each for Xmas but DH wasn't for it. I still want to hopefully I can talk him round before next Xmas  -------------

Mel- ours are angora crosses too... and I really did intend to keep em outside so maybe I should just stick with that

I just put heaps of extra hay in their little box in the hutch so they can snuggle up together and keep warm -------------

My brothers and sisters leave theirs out all the time. They have heaps of hay, and seem quite adept at snuggling up. I guess the wild bunnies manage, and they wouldn't have the luxuries the pet ones do 
At the same time, I'm not sure what they'd do if it snowed! (Not much chance of that in the Waikato!) -------------

I've been wondering the same thing too, as we've got a new bunny. I was finding his cage was getting wet inside with all the rain we've been having, so have covered it with a tarp, which i think keeps it abit warmer. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

Ours have now been moved out... they chewed threw the internet and phone cord!!!  ... can't say I wasn't warned tho eh nkap and kiwi2 So Ive packed the cage with straw and put them on the deck so they're under cover.... ------------- mum to 3 lovely girls :D |

They should be fine outside. I used to breed bunnies (dutch and mini lops - as well as guinea pigs) and they were always outside. However, we had them all raised off the ground and covered in tarps and under heat lights lol. We built a roof over them to keep the rain off. As longs as they have heaps of hay they should be fine, and if there are two of them, they can keep each other warm.
Mini lops aren't so good in frosts tho. Lost a few when the frosts hit so had to bring them inside. I now only have 2 long coat guinea pigs (mum has taken over the breeding of the guinea pigs. Only have 2 bunnies left) and I have had to move them to a cage in the garage cause it's been so wet in CHCH lately that their hutch was getting soaked. Even with a tarp over them! ps Angora's are so cute! -------------

i hand raised 3 bunnies a few years ago from 8 days old. they used to live inside and were fully toilet trained and would use the cat flap to come in and out from the conservatory.
admittedly they thought they were a cat though and would chase my cats around. poor cats. but when we rehomed them they moved outside into the cold down in invercargill and all survived the cold until they got a virus and died (painfully) cos they never got their follow up vaccination

| Hi, we have two bunnies that are getting on a bit (one aged 8- angora x, the other at least 10- silver lop) so they are inside full time, we have to keep them contained though because they fight with each other and harrass the cat. We lost our first two (an angora & a brown thing!) plus our guinea pigs when we first moved here (central Taranaki) despite having tarps, hay & really good insulation, so I guess it just depends on how cold it gets where you are. |
