I was told that if you're transferred to surgical for the birth, the mid wife doesn't get paid. Is that true?
Then, if than is true is that no $ just for the birth bit? The MW must get paid for the pre-birth appointments, and the post-birth ones. Do they just get $x per pregnant woman? I've heard some stories of MWs getting shirty with mums/couples after the births have been transferred to surgical for c-sections. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

MW get paid for attending sections is just a lot less than if you birthed vaginally. They dont get paid for the birth if they dont assist at the section (a mw and paed nurse/paed need to be there to look after baby once delivered).
They get paid for a certain number of pre and post natal visits and the birth. Some mw wont take mums on if they know they will be having an elective (ie previous sections and opting for an electivce), Those are the mw who shouldnt be practising IMHO. -------------

My midwife said something like that too (after c-sect, i was too morphined up to remember specifics) But she said if thats what needed to be done then she didnt mind loosing out dollar wise. She would rather have a healthy mum and baby than risk anything.
Gah i know she said the amount but its lost now. |

My MW only looked after me up to approx 32 weeks (I think) because I got GD and so I was put under a specialist team at a hospital that she was not able to attend my birth at. And I know she got paid for the pre & post natal visits as I had to fill out certain forms for her so that she got paid, but she was so fantastic about it and stayed in contact with me even when I was under someone elses care.
I agree with Melnel that some MW's should not be practising if its only about the money. |

Yep, they lose $s hence you hear quite a few horror stories about mw's not wanting to call a specialist long after they really should have resulting in terrible births or crash c sections.
Thats why I was so glad my GP was still delivering when I got pg!! If you think things are going badly - get your birth partner to really push for an obs ... don't wait til its too late .... DH'd cousins partner is a small thai girl, and her midwife didn't call for an obs til all the monitors started screaching (after 2 hours of pushing with the head stuck half out) and needless to say the obs had to rip the baby out with one leg up on the table as bubs heart was stopping/ barely breathing ... and she had a huge cut / terrible tear, and very traumatic experience, and her partner almost fainted! The baby was 9lbs9 but mw had never thought to check the size, despite hubby being a big baby (over 10lbs). Makes me so mad!!! Could have ended worse, just cos she didn't want to lose a little cash!!! The obs said she should never have been able to deliver naturally and will go straight to the hospital obs if she gets pg again. Not that she would trust another midwife anyway after that experience. ------------- DS (5yrs) and DD (3yrs) |

I'm pretty sure thats right. My midwife basically ignored me once she found out it was twins and that I wanted a section. In fact she was in the hospital and had finished delivering a baby when I was 30 minutes away from going into theater. She left me a note saying she was tired and went home :( How crap is that! The procedure only took 45 minutes but she couldn't be bothered coming in to see how the babies and I were doing. -------------

My mw didnt come into the my section but I was ok with that, I was her 4th birth out 5 in 48 hours and the poor woman had about 5 hours sleep! I was ok for her to go home and get some sleep so she was fresh for number 5! -------------

Mine went home just before I had my c-section too, kinda weird if they get paid more to stay for that, but I guess after 13 hours or so with me, she was probably over it and needed some sleep I wasn't too worried that she wasn't there, but did think it was a little odd and disappointing she wasn't interested in being there right at the end. i heard they get paid 2/3rds of their normal rate if it ends up in a c-sec -------------
