My DS has in the last week, been getting really distracted half way through his bottle (he is FF) and won't finish it, at first he was leaving approx 10-20mls but has slowly been increasing (not every feed, mornings he will take the lot) for example tonight before bed, he left approx 90ml of a 200ml bottle. He just waves his arms around pushing the bottle away and squirming, I will wait a few mins, wind, sit with him and try again but most of the time he just has had enough.
He has been on 3 hourly feeds for some time now, approx 5-6 200ml per day depending on how early he wakes in the morning. He sleeps through the night (usually 7.30ish to 6am ish) He has only moved up to 200ml for every feed in the last fortnight, before that it was only the first feed in the morning and the last at night and the rest were 150ml. He's a good weight - was 7.5kg at his last Plunket appt on 20/04. Any ideas? I'm not overly concerned as he doesn't seem unhappy and is a good size.. just wondering if it's fairly normal for him to decrease the amount he's eating, I thought it would just be steady or go up! Wow he is a fantastic weight. Go you  !! I am not sure from a FF'ing perspective but could he be getting full faster now?
ETA are you feeding in a quiet place?? I find Jackson gets distracted at the smallest things and sometimes wont want to finish feeding. So now I feed in a quiet place with little things going on. ------------- Our Angel July 08  Gone but not forgotten

Yeah, like Rianna said I find that I often have to go to a dark quiet place to feed Cooper as he'll pull off and look around all the time - can take me up from half an hour to an hour sometimes to feed him. He gets too interested in looking at me and smiling away cheekily.
But, no idea about the FF side of things and volumes sorry -------------

We do feed him in a quiet place, especially at night - all lights are out bar a small one so I can see! TV off, no talking or eye contact (when I can help it) He actually slept from 7.45pm - 7.30am this morning so I guess he's getting enough to keep him full! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Yeah I wouldnt worry about the ammounts, the guide on the tin is only a guide, and not what every baby will want/need- when bf you have no idea of the volume, but Aiden will often have times when he will feed from only one boob at a time, or go longer than 3 hrs between feeds and then want another after like 2 1/2 hrs etc, so he doesnt have the same ammount each time, or go exactly the saem ammoutnt of time bewteen feeds either.
As long as he is growing well, having wet nappys and sleeping well in between, then he must be getting just what he needs! |

Hey Emma,
We had a similar situation with DS so I changed his feeds last week (I found it was more than just been distracted, he really wasn't interested). He was having 5 feeds a day of approx 200ml (but was starting to leave quite a bit left in his bottle at certain times of the day), and is now having 4 feeds a day (2 x 200ml & 2 x 250ml - the 200ml ones are the first two and the 250ml are the last two. He doesn't finish any of the bottles but has slightly more in the afternoons so that's why I offer 50ml more. This new routine is great for DH & I too as he now only feeds every 4 hours and he now goes to bed at 6.30pm (as I don't have to try and get the 5 feeds in!) and he still wakes at 7amish like he used to when he went to bed at 7.30/8pm. I was reading up on this and found a website that said that their hunger can taper off a little bit from 4 months - their stomachs are bigger and they can stay fuller for a bit longer - http://www.babycenter.com.au/baby/development/04mth/#2 (sorry I don't know how the make the link pretty!) Awesome, thanks so much monkey33, that really helps a lot! I was a bit unsure of him having only 4 feeds a day but what you've said makes a lot of sense, I'll definitely check out that website.
