Hi ladies!
We are in the midst of planning our wedding. We want to do something a little bit different to the usual sit down buffet type dinner. Something less formal I guess but cheap! ha! Thought the Ohbaby wealth of knowledge might be able to come up with some cool ideas? or casual venues in the Auckland area?

canapes! I want to do canapes but DP won't let me!

If you do that then you can go to a bar if they have a private area, you are looking at paying up to $30 a head depending how many canapes you have where you go etc and you can possibly have a bar tab, or subsidised drinks.

Umm what are of Auckland are you looking at? I'm looking at possibly the Pakuranga Golf Club grrr to having to be formal

My partner and I were thinking about going really cheap when we get married. Have everything done at the registry office and then we can have an informal party afterwards where we can have a friend or family member have us recite the vows and everything.

Budget:
Actual legal marriage - $178 or so last time I looked
Drinks and food - $200
Total - $378 approx

Neither of us are really for formal gatherings anyway so I'm pretty sure it would work out well for us. Only have another 3 and a half years to wait and find out.

Afternoon tea or the canapes idea. You don't have to have it in a bar as a lot of catering companies can put them together for you. My neice did it in some gardens. We had a spit roast and salads etc.

Our wedding cost less than $5000 and that was including the dresses

We were going to have it at a reserve which means a lot to me lots of childhood and teenage hood memories ,and was a place I went to a lot with my friend who passed away 3years ago , but of course , it rained that day , so we had it in our church instead, which was just as beautiful

The reception we had at our home, our inlaws had a huge marquee and we her friend catered it , and we had two bbqs going

We were quite lucky in many regards, our wedding cake was a wedding gift and all our photos were free too

not bad for $30 bridesmaid dresses and a $400 dress huh ?

A few of our photos we did in a local cafe
Im 6 months pregnant here too , just thought id point that out haha

yeah ...im just putting this one in here cos I love it

...yeah , I just used this as an excuse to show off some wedding pics

as for wedding ideas , I always thought it would be nice to have a late afternoon wedding , followed by an outdoor dinner under the stars by candle light
String some fairy lights up , have some bbqs going , wine , good company ...beautiful .

I've been to 2 weddings now where guests were asked to bring a plate rather than presents - and the hosts put on a bbq and we supplied salads and sweets. It worked out well especially as we were travelling to get to both of them and would have been more expensive buying presents.

We went over budget aswell, oops! It seems to be a common theme though

You could just have a massive BBQ, and then go down to like Bush Roads and get a few 5kg bags of salads- they are the ones served in most supermarkets (they have a HUGE variety!) and then just do like hot potatoes etc? It wouldn't be too expensive! Nothing wrong with sausages and bread at a wedding We went to one like that, and it was probably one of the most enjoyable weddings we went to!

Kelly- where were your bridesmaid dresses from? Lol. They look the same as the ones we had- but my bridesmaids were in black...

Who said the marriage license was $178???? Ours cost $120.. It can't be that much cheaper cos we're in Southland? I would have thought it was a set price throughout NZ???

Oh, I got my dress off trademe, seriously have a look there first!!!! We were worried as about my dress, but it turned up and was AWESOME! I lost heaps of weight though so had to go to a dressmaker to get it altered, she said it was a beautifully made dress, couldn't believe we got it off trademe, and said the material was silk. She couldn't have even bought the material for what I paid for my dress, let alone made it! Or the beading or any of that stuff!!

We did an early afternoon ceremony followed by afternoon tea - catered by the local New World!!! Deli and bakery did platters of all sorts, we had cakes/slices in the freezer for lunches for 6 months, and we didn't spend that much! They also did the alcohol, anything not used could be returned, and free glass hire. So don't discount the local supermarket!!!

We had a BBQ that evening at my parents house, just to end the day, had got changed out of my dress etc by then.

spit roast
Or how about a picnic. Each couple or group of people together have a basket with goodies in it. Picnic blankets all around with the baskets. Can have juice or wine with it. And you can literally make this as expensive or cheap as you want. and there is loads of things you can do with it.

You can have it in a park, reserve, beach. Literally whereever.

Kelly, I want to keep it small so hoping about 80, I've made DP cut out heaps from his list (well I did it and he hasn't argued hehe)

We want somewhere where we can have friends come after the formal part to party with us, I would prefer that part in town, just because they are all hospo heads and work in town and we'd maybe put some money down on the bar. My mum is a partier from way back so wants to continue on with us. haha

I've thought about spitroast but want someone to clean it up afterwards, pack down the hall etc. We can get alcohol fairly cheap I would think through DP's work, (gotta love work accounts haha) so I would LOVE somewhere we can do byo as well.

Oh and Kelly, I have ALWAYS loved your pics your wedding dress was gorgeous

Our wedding cost us less then $5000 too, we had 35 guests and where a bit selfish when putting the guest list together, ie we had good friends who are seeing somebody but if we didn't know the other person he/she wasn't invited. It was our day and we wanted to share it with people that meant something to us.
We got married at Alberton House in AKL where we had fingerfood and drinks served after the ceremony. After that we had a private room in restaurant booked for people who wanted to join us. We paid for drinks but asked guests to pay for their own meals.

Hi there, I haven't read the other replies but thought I'd tell you about our wedding in case there's any ideas you like.

We had planned the whole shebang..big white wedding, but changed the date and that was the end of that.

We ended up finding an awesome little local cafe, with beautiful wooden floors etc, they usually do catering for functions and stuff anyway... one of my friends had her wedding in coromandel on the beach with just family then had a party at the cafe when they returned to palmy for friends etc. (so there's one idea).

anyway, I approached them and asked if they would mind if we were married there too. they were fine with that. I bought a wooden archway from bunnings, got fake ivy from a cool shop here and weaved it around with flowers and fake flax up the sides and butterflies all over it, turned out really cool and much cheaper than hiring the one we wanted.

I did mostly everything, we printed our own invites on pearly white paper (warehouse stationary $10 for 20 sheets, each sheet fitted 3 on it in length across), punched little butterflies in a couple of parts on it, backed it on blue card (warehouse stationary $2 a sheet of A3), and put an orange ribbon thru the top, in a bow. cheap as and individual.. I moulded the choccys from nestle metls in choccy heart moulds (cheap as from trademe), and hand wrapped them in foils from trademe, again waaaay cheaper than buying them at 50cents per heart. got a metre of organza from spotlight, made organza bags and threaded tiny orange ribbon thru them, each bag had 3 hearts in it in orange, blue and green foil.

Anyway we had my brother do photos for us before the wedding up at massey uni here cos they had heaps of neat places to have them, then we went tot he cafe, where an aisle had been made with our archway at the end, tables were arranged either side, with votive candles on the tables (we got them cheap too at warehouse, hot glued them to those little square dish thingies you get dipping sauces in at restaurants, and put white tiny stones around)

we had a sunset ceremony at 7pm, followed by supper, and dancing. It was actually just right for us, we had time to just mingle and chat, no stopping for sit down meal, we still had speeches, i made our cake (edmonds choc cake mix, madeup in hired cake tins from local hire place, covered in plain white icing with blue ribbon and more butterflies...)

we did it on the cheap..it depends on how much you are prepared to do yourselves... the wedding industry really hikes up prices when for a little effort you can do alot yourself bor half, to even a quarter of the price.

The wedding reception for us cost $1,100, all up, that was supper catering for 70 people and an open bar.

Think outside the square... some people have beach weddings, then have a barbeque with their mates, others hire marquees and have them on a friends farm... It can be as big or little as you want. I really liked that we got married at sunset, sounds so romantic, and i really enjoyed that it was just a fun day, we all had lunch together at a cafe before goingour own ways for the afternoon etc.

hope that gave you some ideas. good luck.

The births, deaths, marriages website says it's $120 for a "Marriage Licence (intended to be solemnised by a Marriage Celebrant)"

or $170 for "Marriage Licence (ceremony in a Registry Office) "

My partner and I were looking at the second one so thats what I was referring to.

Great ideas guys keep em coming!

We definitely are thinking canapes/finger food and drinks. Much more informal! Just need to find a nice venue really! Have looked EVERYWHERE! Alberton house looks lovely! It is such a pity it shuts at 10pm otherwise that would be us! Still waiting to hear back from a few other places so fingers crossed!

Kelly your wedding pics are gorgeous! Colours are stunning!

We are lucky we can cut costs in lots of ways, cake is sorted, invitations my partner is a designer so thats sorted, my brother a photographer and so on..

I think the biggest way you can save money is by going somewhere where you can take your own alcohol. Bars/restaurants/function rooms tend to charge upwards of $35 a bottle (for the cheap stuff!!) for wine, but if you can go byo, you can work out a deal with your local supermarket. Even if they charge corkage you still end up saving a tonne of money.
And definitely do as much as you can yourself (invites/decorations etc) coz as it was mentioned before, whenever they hear "wedding" companies jack the prices up something chronic. Most wedding invites end up chucked out after they've been stuck on the fridge for a few months, so they don't have to be too flash!

First time round I got married midmorning in a garden by a stream then had a byo picnic under the gums - real oldfashioned lol everyone loved it. It wound up round 3pm then we went and played mini-golf for a couple of hours which was hilarious then to a local cafe for a sitdown buffet and dancing. Cost bout $4000 not including the video and my dress both of which my grandmother gifted. I really didn't want a big deal but since I didn't have a choice I tried to keep it as laidback as possible.

Now me and DP are getting married (my first marriage fell apart within about 18 months) and I get to do whatever I want so I think we're having our reception first - New Years Eve coming up at this point . We're putting a beast on a spit (we have the beast, a friend has the spit), and salads and desserts that me and friends will make beforehand, set up a marquee (my parents have a huge one) in our backyard, put up fairylights and have the stereo by the deck. I want a dragonfly theme for our cake and I definitely want a dress!! DP and the boys are probably gonna be in jeans and tshirts lol I just reckon I should indulge my princess side
Anyway then I want a tiny dawn ceremony on the beach - us, the boys and witnesses.
It'll be bout $500 including marriage licence so pretty reasonable.

Great thread and great ideas! DF and I have been engaged for 2 and a half years. We would get married tomorrow if we could but unfortunately, all his side of the family are in Ireland, as well as all his friends. I really wanted the big white wedding. Was going to have it at Trents Vineyard in CHCH but that is $1500 just for venue hire..... food and drinks on top of that and I think for the gourmet BBQ option it was something like $60per head and we would invite about 60 guests so that's another $3600 already! Just not in our budget really. Especially now that we have a wee one.
We are beginning to think that we will have to have 2 weddings. One here and one in Ireland. My sister is deadly afraid of flying and has said she wouldn't go to Ireland for a wedding but I really want her to be there cause she's like my best friend. But DF's Dad is also afraid of flying and wont come to NZ. Not going to get married without his Dad here! We are already going to Ireland next Xmas (DF's parents paying for the 3 of us to go over) So I'm thinking maybe we can get married while we are over there and have a party at the local pub afterwards and then 're-marry' when we get back to NZ with our NZ family and friends. I'm pretty creative so can do invites etc myseld. Have a photographer friend who can take piccies on the cheap. I'm not too fussed on getting a flash dress. Just something nice and casual. Doesn't even have to be white. Anyone got any ideas on good cheap places in CHCH?? I've always wanted to get married on a farm but don't know if there is anything like that in CHCH that would be suitable? I don't have any farmer friends. I'd love to get married at Orana Park but DF hates that idea. Also, any tips on organising a wedding abroad.
Sorry to thread jack!! Good luck to others of you organising weddings!

My parents went to a wedding a few years ago where they were asked to pay for their own meals instead of taking a gift. There was a set menu with a few choices for approx $30-40 a head.

My sister had her ceremony at the beach and then the reception at their house in the backyard. DH and I made all the desserts, a family friend did the photos, MIL made the cake, they had a beast and lamb from the farm on the spit and we made all the salads. Really cheap, but a lot of work for us guests.

We looked into doing it on the informal and inexpensive side - just having drinks and nibbles in a garden after the ceremony with really close friends and immediate family. DH wasn't too keen though and we ended up doing the big white wedding.

As Huntersmum said - take a look at http://www.weddings.co.nz - www.weddings.co.nz forum as they have heaps of great info and suggestions, I also used them heaps when we planned our wedding

hen we get round to it, DS will prolly be old enough to help plan lol. so if he wants fairy bread served, then we will serve fairy bread. if he wants mummy to wear a blue dress with thomas the tank engine all over it, then i will lol.

Mum will sew my dress (this and a grandchild are what she has been waiting for, for the last 22 years lol!)

prolly just have the wedding in our backyard, then head away to the beach or a park for some bridal party photos and hopefully get family and friends to help turn backyard into reception area while we are away having photos done. (or have the wedding at a park and come home for the reception... or someones backyard as its free lol)

most likely do a bbq and keep it all very informal.

photographer we will most likely get someone professional and neutral but will defo be shopping around for a cheap deal.

we are thinking have a kids area too and hire a babysitter or 2 to help look after the kids area if the parents want to have adult conversation.

will have finger food during the reception and the bbq "meal".

might buy a cake but dunno yet.

we want inexpensive, personal and fun. we both love the church and fancy bridesmaids and white wedding dress and meals with waiters.... but its not how we grew up and we want it to be a family thing (incl DS) not just me and DP iygwim?

its not for everyone but if you are looking for something "original" ... think about what makes your and your family who you are... if you both love rugby, then have a rugby ball cake. if your favourite movie is the same... then have a theme. if you both love to cook, then help do all the cooking yourself or make your own wedding cake. if you both love the outdoors, make cupcakes instead of a wedding cake and get little cake-topper trees for them (or flowers or whatever)

HTH! and congrats btw

Tapas could be another idea for cheap food, no idea on what it would be compared to a buffet.

We are thinking of doing a destination wedding if we ever get around to it! We both have big families so will end up cheaper as less people will be able to come.

I;ve been looking at what would be considered a bridesmaind's dress - wear it long for the wedding, then get it taken up & you'll have a cocktail dress for other weddings and special events :)

After we've eloped in Quebec we're going to have a party for everyone round home (we're super luck and have a massive back yard). This way if people can be bothered turning up they will, if not well their loss!

We'll have 2 spits one a wild pig & one with lamb, chicken & beef for those that wont eat the wild meat. I'll only serve coleslaw and buns - have had far too many parties where fancy salads dont get touched and it ends up being wasted.

and as per usualy BYO booze! Though we are contemplating a Keg (think they are about $300ish). but the meat we get for free so it'll just be the salad & buns that will cost. plus with buns you dont need plates so no washing up!

Doesnt help that we'll have just come back from our trip so will be super broke!

We have changed up our ideas a little. Since we have kind of set a date (more like time frame at this point lol) we have looked at hiring a venue not far from where we live but when we realised that it would be close to $1000 just for the venue hire I had the crazy idea of going to a local park and just having a picnic wedding. We have a friend who is a marriage celebrant and if everyone brings a plate and a blanket then we should be pretty well set and on the really cheap too.

we did a small wedding ceremony and got gifts and favors from https://www.bestpricefavors.com/product-category/wedding-favors-decorations-supplies/cheap-wedding-favors-ideas/" rel="nofollow - https://www.bestpricefavors.com/product-category/wedding-favors-decorations-supplies/cheap-wedding-favors-ideas/ our guests loved the intimate event instead of having a large ceremony
