Subject: 3 month old waking HEAPS in the night :-(

My 3 month old son has been pretty much following his own little routine (eating 4 times a day, sleeping 3 naps of around an hour), and waking once in the night for a feed.
This week he has totally thrown me and I'm not sure what to do with him! I thought as they got older they are supposed to sleep longer in the night, and he appears to be sleeping shorter? He is usually in bed by 7pm ish, and used to wake between 3 and 4am for a feed. It has gradually shortened to around 1am, but then he would sometimes sleep till 7am.
The last two nights he has woken at 9pm and 11pm, but then put himself back to sleep. But then woken at 12am HUNGRY, gone back to sleep till 3am, then woken hungry, and woken again at 6am! He is awake for about half an hour then, and eventually goes back to sleep for an hour.
Could this be a growth spurt? Anyone know why his sleeps seem to be shortening instead of lengthening?? I haven't been this tired in weeks!
I am also worried he will eat less during the day because he is eating at night, and it will become a habit so he never sleeps through!
Thoughts??

I think the thing about 'routines' is that babies like to mix it up a little, so you will think you have it sussed and then they will throw a curve ball to confuse you.
Probably a growth spurt, they have one about 12 weeks, and once he settles down, he will probably sleep longer again.

I went through this for just under 2 weeks, and all of a sudden he is back to sleeping through the night. I thought it might be a growth spurt too?

I had a similar thing, Cooper was sleeping for 7 hours and then waking every 3 or 4 after that, then at 12 weeks it all went a bit nuts and he was waking every 2-3 hours and then from about 5ish every hour. But after about 6 weeks suddenly things started to improve and quite rapidly. First it was back to one or two wake ups and now he's sleeping through or sometimes waking once. So hopefully it will be shorter than 6 weeks for you - but better than 6 months
Also, it did seem that he didn't eat as much during the day and I remember someone else mentioning awhile back that because they're getting nosey and distracted they do seem to drink less during the day and so maybe they're making up for it at night?

maybe try to find some quiet time to feed more during the day? Teyla often sleeps through the night (not always, sometimes wakes once or twice), but feeds a lot more often than 4 times during the day, probably double that.

Ds does this really often too , What we often forget is that our babies are still so little and they need to feed often, even through the night.

It could be a growth spurt.
Is he warm enough?
I'm sure at 3mths my son was having more than 4 feeds a day.. so he could be hungry....you could try and give him another feed during the day???

Sounds like a growth spurt - Ty went through just the same thing exhausting!!
I'd fit atleast one more feed in during the day and make sure you offer both sides (I assume you're BFing??) at each feed so give him one then give him a 10-15m break then offer the other side.
HTH and good luck

We went through this, E hit 3 months, previously she was a one night wakeup and all of a sudden it was 2-3-4 times a night. It started to get better around 4 months, and we're now back to one wakeup a night most nights.

Febgirl, that is depressing! :-) We were also doing one wake up, and now 2, 3 or 4. I thought growth spurts were only for a few days, not a month! Holy smoke!

Yep - all of us in the Jan 2010 thread went though this when our abbies hit 12 weeks, they all started waking more, even the ones sleeping all night, and the ones already waking lots got worse.

It will just be a phase Based on my experience, it will be hideous for a while then improve!
Just hang in there, it won't be forever, doesn't seem like it now but you will get a full night's sleep again.
