Some simple ideas I've done before (or been the recipient of!):

- Decorating pots and filling with sweets or homebaking

- Filling the same pots with little pot plants (even though I usually know they won't survive!)

- Fudge, coconut ice, home baking all in a re-usable container

- As a teenager, instead of Christmas cards one year I painted each of my friends' names in the centre of a piece of paper and cut words out from the newspaper to describe them

- My sister made me a little teddy bear I still have (and personalised it)

- I bought little bears from Spotlight and made accessories out of modelling clay to represent things that my friends did (one had a hockey stick, another was a musician etc)

- Home made cards are simple but always appreciated. One simple thing I've found that works well is to get 2 pieces of different coloured card, then find a block image of some kind (I usually use clipart!) and trace over it, then cut out the shapes of the image with a sharp knife so the image comes through as the coloured card underneath iygwim. Simple things like roses or that sort of thing - anything that's basically a shape, not any detail. Have a look on clipart, there are loads. I've made bookmarks etc like this too.

All really simple ideas and might not be what you're looking for but hope they help anyway!

I like recipe jars. You layer a jar with the dry ingedients for some baking then put a ribbon around it holding the instructions on.

Handpainted plates/mugs, I did this one year for christmas and did christmas themed plates (at splashy just out of Ngaruawahia).

Homemade chocolates. Just have to get chocolate buttons and molds (sp)

Homemade jam/relish etc

made hubby a wallet from duct tape.

Made Dad some bbq spice mixes - they are YUM

made mum a handbag - really easy - and this is coming from someone who had never sewn before.

Get a plain t pot and some special ceramic paint. Dip kids thumbs in the paint and put thumb prints around it in a garden setting ie make flowers out of prints and the bodies of butterflies and bees. Then get a black marker probably ceramic special one and put the grass and leaves and stalks and wings etc on. We had a silent auction at pre-school and one teacher did this with all the kids thumbprints and it was awesome. It sold for over $50 US as all the parents wanted it.

Herb pots are always good as we all use herbs and they die so quickly so a new replacement set for the kitchen is always good.

Garlic infused oil. Get nice glass bottle put some rosemary and garlic in the bottom and get some bulk olive oil to fill. (get a small bottle as cost can be high otherwise) seal the bottle with wax etc and make a nice label.

Coffee mug with a bag containing hot chocolate mix and marshmallows and instructions.

Movie hamper. DVD(go for a classic from the warehouse and not the latest release), popcorn sachet, rug a bottle of drink. Or if not sure on the movie a gift card to the warehouse or local dvd rental store.

The baking in a jar mentioned above is always good. Especially for a seasonal event. Like anzac biscuit ingredients for anzac day. Gingerbread for christmas etc.

I got once from a friend those things to put over bowls and juice jugs to stop the flies. Doilies (sp?) (lacey things to go on dressers) with beads put around the edges. So useful and now you can make them kind of trendy with the neat beads out there.

Wine cork place mats to prevent heat on the tables. collect wine corks and arrange nicely make a frame and hot glue it all together. Have seen some done with stones. Saw the stone matting at bunnings.

ohh got to pick up from kindy. My time flies.

We did concrete tiles - used old icecream containers, poured in concrete, did handprint, added stones, fern leaves, etc and had 2 thin squares of clear hard plastic with a laminated photo in between and kinda sunk it into the concrete too IYKWIM. Looked awesome! Cheap and easy too.
