| Does anyone else have a fussy bottle feeder. I b/f for the first 3 months before I had to move on to formula and in the last couple of weeks I found my baby would become fussy at the breast in the evenings. Our GP thought it was colicky behaviour rather than reflux although I'm not convinced. He is fussy with the bottle too and it seems to be when he is tierd sometimes during the day but more often in the evenings. To deal with this we have getting up and walking while holding him as starting a feed works, and sometimes rocking and shusshing when we need to. Is this common? Does anyone else have a fussy feeder like this. My baby is 5 months now and is starting to get heavier to hold with one arm while feeding. It also makes it hard for other people to feed him if they are babysitting. |

I wonder if I shouldn't be tring to get him to finish his bottle but yes sometimes I resort to a few "tricks" to get him to drink. Channel 45, sitting him in his bouncer, his cot mobile seems to help sometimes, and putting him in his car seat (I have no idea why he prefers sitting in there to drink, and I only use that one when I've already got plans to take him out) ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I had this with my daughter - she was a nightmare to feed. I gave up breastfeeding at 4 months becuase I thought the move to the bottle might be better - but she was the same. One thing I learnt was not to stress about it - she used to wind me up and then I would get upset and it would be worse. End the end I started giving her evening bottle as a dreamfeed, as if I got her up after about 2hrs asleep she would drink it straight down and then stay asleep. But this only worked because sh would sleep whether she had the bottle or not.
Worst bit was she never grew out of it... still doesn't drink alot of milk and struggles to drink an evening bottle at all ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids

Oh yeah, also I would NEVER have gotten anyone else to feed her - I was the only one who had hope...
And I feel you on the feeding while walking - we did lots of that. I wonder if alot of it is tiredness, becuase the walking around would settle her almost to sleep and then she would drink... ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids

I had a fussy feeder too and had to almost rock her to sleep to get to her start drinking. It ended up being an intolerance to the formula along with silent reflux. Once we had the right formula it was a lot better. ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

Thanks guys great tips and hoped he would grow out of it but maybe not
Interesting about the silent reflux. I am trying to figure out if it could be reflux when he is usually fussy in the evenings but sometimes during the day too or if it is just tierdness? |

Cooper can be quite fussy too. Yesterday between 6.30am and 5pm he'd only had 230mls to drink. Then finally he took another bottle, kept screaming everytime I put a bottle near him. I think he's got reflux now too. I also think he was constipated yesterday so not sure if that also made him fussy. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

Daniel would sometimes fuss at the bottle but only if he was tired. We would just keep trying different things like walking around & different rooms etc. Sometimes we would just have to give up & leave the rest of the bottle & put him to bed.
Maybe try & give the bottle earlier? Daniel would sometimes take an hour to feed one bottle as I'd just stop & start & keep trying until the one hour safe made up formula time was up. ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">  http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

Sympathies to you, my son can be a right pain to feed from his bottle and I know how upsetting and frustrating it can be.
I found if I was calm it was easier (much easier said that done!) and I also found distracting him works wonders. He now has a toy/remote/another bottle/anything to play with while feeding. He also will often only feed lying flat on the floor, which is odd given he's a reflux baby, but you do what works! |

Do you know what? I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out why he is getting so difficult to feed and decided to try a bigger teat (a teat with more holes) and it worked a treat!!! He was obviously getting frustrated with the smaller teat. He gulped down close on 250ml he was so happy...then had a major spill...oops. The look on his face was like 'thank gawd you figured it out mummy'. Admittedly he is still fussy when he is tierd and in the evenings and the tips here are great. Thankfully it is not as bad now as I was starting to dread feeding times! Just thought I'd let you guys know in case you happened to drop back into this thread, thanks
