If there are any pregnant mums living in Palmerston North who would be willing to have a midwifery student follow them through their pregnancy and birth then I would love to hear from you! It is a great opportunity for you to contribute, in a special way, to the education of our future midwives. The student is available to help with support and companionship during your pregnancy and childbirth experience and is a valuable opportunity for the student midwives to learn what the experience of pregnancy, birth and parenting is like for you and your family. If you could PM me I would be really grateful. Thanks!

I'm sorry, I have already got a midwife student following me through. She is really lovely and its so nice to have her there. I can really recommend having a student work with you (thus far anyways)

All the best Katte and I hope you find a lovely couple to work with!

I wouldn't mind, though I'm gonna be a bit anal around the 20w mark.

I had a student MW with Daniel be there when I was in labour and my only issue with her was that she did my episotomy and didn't do it big enough so she had to go back and do it again. Given that I have a phobia of being cut this was not good. So I don't let students near me like that now.

Little Bug I will know you as you will be in my class lol! I am first year through Otago too :)

Stacey - sent you a PM.

For anyone else interested this is a totally hands off opportunity and is about following you through your pregnancy and birth and providing support. It is not about us learning midwifery skills. We are attached to you not your LMC.

All stages of pregnancy welcome! :)

Kebakat, that sounds like a freaky experience! First years are completely hands off, and only do non-invasive stuff like blood pressures and things, and only with women's consent of course. It's all about following a woman's experience at this stage, seeing how she is feeling through each stage and learning about her pregnancy. Most women that have a student follow them think it's really worthwhile, they get extra support and a student that is willing to advocate for them and get them extra information.

Katte, you should PM me your name so I know who you are! Lol.

Have you got any follow-throughs yet?

Hmmm sounds silly but I never asked what year my student is in, but she is attached to my LMC not really to me, not sure if she is with other clients too, I presume she is... anyways nice to have her

Thanks BAMN08 :) Great that you that you are enjoying the experience of having a student midwife.

There are eight of us first years in the manawatu region and I am actually looking for women for some of my fellow students as, having a 16 mth old I have a good 'baby on the way' network lol It's a bit harder for some of the others who have older children and don't have friends or friends of friends who are expecting. They are all fantastic ladies

Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate it.

I'm pretty sure I am moving down that may about July-ish and will be about 5 1/2 months at that stage. Still waiting for work to confirm so I can start looking for an LMC to transfer to. Send me a PM if you want and I'll get back to you once we get told what's going on and see if you still want more people to shadow.... Don't suppose you know any awesome LMC down that way?

My midwife had a student midwife(who is now finished her training) with her at each of my visits.
When I had my M/C she had a nice girl with her, and then when i got pregnant with Caden she had the same girl, but my first appointment that pregnancy, was her last time with my MW as she was fully trained. She then got another girl with her, and she would take my blood pressure, feel for baby and ask questions etc, for Caden and Bella, and she has just finished her training.

It was so lovely having her there as well, she is a cool chick and is having her second bubba in June.

Good Luck Katte! If I was pregnant and living over there Id let you follow me

What exactly is involved??
I'm 25 wks with my 4th, am being looked after by the high-risk team at the hospital as I have anti-D and anti-c anti-bodies. I'll also be having an elective c-section. Have recently had to stop seeing my MW as my care has been transfered to the hospital.
Can you share some more info on had this all works? How many visits, does the student come to MW/OB visits etc??

If you read little bugs post that explains it, but I know that they go to all the appointments etc. They are like a support person to you I guess. I'll let Katte know that you've asked a question.

Hi Mum of twins! It is a very supportive role that the student takes on and we go to as many of your antenatal and postnatal appointments as possible and the birth if you are comfortable with that. Absolutely no problems if you are under the high risk team as two of my ladies are and they have found it really good having me as it was really hard giving up their mw and having different people see them a lot of the time so having a familiar face with them has been somewhat calming from what they tell me!. It is totally all about you and is an opportunity for the student to view pregnancy and birth through your eyes whilst giving you support. Let me know if you are keen and I can pass your details onto my student facilitator who can call you to discuss it further. You also have total control over whether or not the student attends procedures and appointments so if there is a time where you feel uncomfortable about having the student present you can ask her to leave. I have been in your situation, having been transferred to the high risk team myself in my pregnancy so can understand how you feel and if it's any consolation, they are brilliant there and will take good care of you and bubs.
