It seems to be the norm from listening to others, but just wanted to double check............is there a big growth spurt bang on 4months?
My lil man was 4 months yesterday and hes gone from sleeping through til 7am, to getting up twice to be fed and its not a little feed, hes really going hard taking big long controlled sucks to fill up his tummy...........and that doesnt stop during the day also............
So how long can i expect this to last??
I can now kinda see why some people rush out to give solids or formual at 4months cos they think their babies arent getting enough from their milk cos of how hungry they are, but i know i have good milk and Im confident hes getting enough from me and just requiring more cos of a growth spurt, but just need some reassurance.
Really tiring though and my nipples are getting sore again from soooo much feeding. Ive gotta go out tomorrow and i dont think im gonna be able to express any cos hes always emptying me and ive only got 90mls frozen.........arrghhhh

We're going through this at the moment. Jamie was born on the 9th of December, so not even a week before your wee boy. He has always been a pretty crappy sleeper, but started to get better a few weeks ago and now it's just getting worse and worse. He's feeding two hourly, around the clock and MAN my nipples are sore at the moment. He's definitely not getting enough from me though, as he is screaming in hunger in the evenings so we've started on the solids early. I know he's only just four months but hours of screaming is getting me down and I hate seeing him so hungry. And he only needs a few teaspoons in the evening for him to settle easily, instead of 2+ hours of screaming and feeding constantly and me having absolutely no milk left.
I don't think I can really express either as he is constantly emptying me and he won't take a bottle so it's more than likely going to be wasted.
I hope these boys slow down a bit soon!

If Jesse was screaming cos my body couldnt keep up then i would prob do the same Renee.
Im gonna have to leave a sachet of formula out just in case tomorrow, but DH will be under strict instructions only to use if A: im still to far away from home when he starts wanting food, and B: and nothing else ties him over (ie sleep or a rusk. i hate the thought of my baby being hungry more than him having to have something other than breastmilk.
My friend said we wil only be a couple of hours but she loses all concept of time and her 2 quickly turns into 4 esp when shes managed to get time away from the kids.
Jesse only just started sleeping through the night too Renee and now this..........hopefully he goes back to sleeping through again soon...........esp since im up with insomnia and ecezma on top of his feeds

Same thing happened with my girl at pretty much exactly from 4 months old. She had been sleeping from 10 ish through till 7 (from 3 months old), then at first she was waking once, then twice, then 3 times a night again.
Then pretty much at 5 months old she starting sleeping through again, she has been sleeping from 9 - 7 for the past 4 nights so i hope this is permanent!
So for my girl it was a month of all the extra feeding, and it showed in her last weight check, she went from 50th percentile to around 70th percentile within a month.
Also the plunket nurse said it was very common for babies that age as they are also getting more aware and get distracted during feeding in the day and don't feed as well, so they need more at night again - esp with the growth spurt too.

oh and plunket said its not neccesarily a sign they need solids - they just want more milk!

Esme started this at 3 months and we are only just getting less feeds now, For us it became a habit so we spent a few days stretching feeds out so that she was feeding closer to 4 hourly rather than the 2 she was doing.
She went from the 50th to the 85th in just over a month!

same thing here! another hungry boy! But as we get closer to 5 months it is slowly down. I think it is a combo of a growth spurt and not feeding that well during the day, looking around and being too interested in what's going on. Whereas at night it's dark, mothings happening so he feeds.!
hang in there, it does get better!

Altho last night he slept from 9pm-5am so not too bad really. Will try and feed him more during the day even if hes not asking for it.

Jamie is not even on the chart for height he is that tall and is on the 97th percentile for weight, so not sure how much bigger he is going to get! The plunket nurse said all that milk had to go all the way to the end of his toes and it's a long way so no wonder he is a hungry boy! We got 9PM-midnight and then from 3AM onwards was just continual screaming in hunger. I was feeding him almost constantly and he wasn't really getting anything out of me. I would go the formula route as a top up if I thought he could keep it down, but he won't have a bar of anything but me.

Aww mamanee that is hard! Esme was like that feeding 2 hourly around the clock for ages, I didn't want to do formula either with intollerances in the family and knowing that I can't do much dairy (or chocolate) without her ezcema flaring.
Can you see a La Leche leader or LC? You might find that they will be able to give you some support.
My plunket nurse was hopeless in supporting me with Esme when she went through this so I ended up at the family centre in Hamilton for a couple of days which for us helped a lot! I think we would still be having 2 hourly feeds if we hadn't gone.
