Subject: A plate??

Ok so we have ante natal classes on Saturday 9:30-4:30, and the lady rung up and told DH last night that we need to take a plate for a shared lunch.. She even told him it had to be something pregnancy friendly (well duh?! Or does she really think I'm gonna turn up with a plate full of sushi??)

Its just, I'm not THAT fussy with what I eat-mainly cos I eat pretty well, and know whats fresh etc.. DH suggested I do club sandwiches, BUT then my thought was even if I use vacum packed ham etc, someone won't wanna eat it cos they'll be fussier than I am...

So help me with ideas of what I can take!

I'm not too keen on baking, cos, well, my baking isn't that great to share with strangers yet lol...

You could do fresh fruit kebabs
Buy some skewers and cut up some chunky fruit peices and pop them on, you could even add a mashmellow here end there. Nice, easy and tasty

Or just do tomato and cucumber club sammies ( bit boring tho )

Not too keen on doing the fruit kebabs, I don't wanna have to go down to the shop and spend too much... We only just done grocerys and then found out afterwards!!

Biscuits could be good... But what about something more substantial? Cos it is for lunch Gosh.. This is hard...

Or, should I just presume other people will do more substantial stuff like this, and only take biscuits?

I don't even know how many people will be doing the course But I don't wanna look like the dumb young one who couldn't even make a effort...

Do they have a microwave or oven to heat stuff? Maybe some sausage rolls or cheese and pickle, chive sandwiches.

Presumably there will be husbands/partners there so they'd eat the ham sandwiches.... I'd just take those if that is what you have to hand.

I was going to say take sausage rolls and mince savouries. We did a three hour course on Sat morning with part of ours many moons ago now, I got up and chucked the savouries in the oven before we had our showers and then took them, they were still hot when we got there and covered with tinfoil they had an oven to warm them up, also remember that there will be dads there too! I found that the guys ate the savouries more then the preggers chicks.

Make a bacon and egg pie or vege quiche? I'm sure a vege quiche can be eaten cold?

Whenever I take a plate I always like to take savoury because you know without a doubt that there will be more sweet then savoury.

Oh poos, idiot! I forgot to mention that "they don't have many heating facilities"

What on earth does that mean?! Lol! So I don't know... My first thought was savouries/sausages rolls and sandwichs, but what if we can't heat the hot stuff??

And good point about the DH's eating the sandwiches! It wouldn't worry me, cos I'd know the salad was fresh and the ham vacum packed, but the other ladies wouldn't! And they might be fussier than me...

I guess I'm a bit aware I'm probably gonna be the youngest one there, and don't wanna make a idiot of myself already sorta freaking out about it all! I hate stuff like this...

Everyone at our AN just bought a small cake from the supermarket and tbh almost no one ate... But there was a tonne of choc stuff!

I know what you mean though, I had a tough time deciding what to take, i kept thinking "Omg if I bring this they'll criticise because it's not healthy enough, if I bring this they'll criticise because ..."

What about egg and salad samdwiches? Or else a pack of bikkies sounds like a good idea. Or bread and hummus - just buy a cheap french stick from a bakery and hummus on special?

I hate taking plates to something like that. I think I'd just do the club sammies and have some without the ham.

Good luck!

What if you made two types of sandwiches (or three), say ham & cheese, tomato and cucumber & cream cheese. Then the blokes can eat the ham ones (and you anyone else "brave" enough lol) and the girls can eat the vege ones.

Another failsafe (and impressive coz they're YUMMY) preggy food is savoury muffins. I know you don't really want to bake but honestly the only rule is DON'T OVERMIX muffins and they will be fab. If you do mini ones then they're even less likely to be yuck I put cheese, grated zucchini, capsicum, sweet corn kernels and sometimes roasted kumara in mine.

Nkap9-thats pretty much EXACTLY how I feel! Lol....

Oh no, I hope people will eat! I don't cope very well without eating regularly! Lol...

I could make egg, tomato, cucumber, lettuce sandwichs?? Would it matter if I boiled the eggs the night before, and then made them all up in the morning before we went down?? I may as well just put ham in them aswell then and have proper sandwichs, right?? I don't care if the other pregnant ones don't eat them haha, I will!!!!

OH! Kiwisj I didn't think of doing mini muffins! But I don't have any tins... Hhmm might have to go buy one if I decide to do that..

And a couple different types of sandwichs are a good idea!!!! I mean I know that vacum packed meats are fine, and they'd be fine opened in the morning and eaten at lunch- but I keep thinking some people may be fussier than me! Especially when your not making it yourself..

What about grabbing some celery and carrots (which will be cheap from a fruit shop) chop them up, add a container of some kind of preggy friendly dip.. should be relatively cheap and no need for heating plus it's healthy so no worries there

I always get nervous at these types of things too so I know where you're coming from!

Can you borrow muffin tins off someone rather than buying them specially? Mind you, mini muffins are awesome AND they're a good size for babies so they're a good investment

Picklets with butter and jam are a nice dish to take, or scones - you could make sweet and savoury versions if you want - bit of butter and yum for both Dads and Mums.

Hummus isn't preggy friendly ladies - the tahini in it has been associated with salmonella.

When eva im coping out on a bring a plate i take a couple of packs of mallowpuffs........they always get eaten too.

That doesnt help if you dont want to go to the shops again......not sure what you cupboards might have but a french stick and salmon mixed with cream cheese is preggie friendly.

The club sandwiches without meat would be fine. you can mix quite a bit of different flavours.........pickle and cheese, lettuce egg and tomato, cheese and tomato, tuna. And you could also just have a couple with the ham for those less fussy.........have one side preggie friendly one side DH friendly

I lived on Egg sandwiches when pregnant

I don't mind going down to shop to spend a little bit, but wouldn't wanna spend more than $25 on a plate.. Yes I'm a tight wad! But I presume it means we'll have to do this next saturday aswell?! So doing it 2 saturdays in a row, means $50 for 2 lunches!!! Thats like over half our weekly food budget....

Normal edam cheese is fine right? Nobody would turn their nose up at that?

I might do a plate of sandwichs and then a plate of biscuits... Or is that over kill?

ETA: oh, literally a plate? Like a dinner plate size? Or should I use a nice platter which is a bit bigger (depending on what size one I use? I have heaps! Lol)

OMG, I'm so not ready for mother-hood, I can't even do the "bring a plate"!!!! What sorta Mum am I gonna be

Posted By: High9
Date Posted: 15 April 2010 at 1:31pm
Lol a dinner plate is fine, remember everyone else will be bringing a plate too!

Any cheese is fine so long as it is pasturised

You could just do fairy bread LOL!! I would have loved that when I was pregnant!

ALL cheese in NZ is pastuerised........its law so you can go with any cheese you like. I wouldnt worry about two plates. I always gauge it like you bring enough that if you ate just that plate you would be full and if everyone does the same affectively there should be enough of all the food brought fill everyone up..............so if the plate is for two people(you and DH) then yes make it a little bit bigger to accomodate two peoples worth........

Funny thing, my dad is english and when he first moved to NZ he was told to bring a plate and he did just that literally......just the plate nothing else

OMG yes! Do fairy bread. Awesome

Whatever you end up making, I reckon a dinner plate size is fine. Who's going to know which is your plate once they're all on the table anyway?!

Cut up carrots, celery, peppers etc and arrange nicely on a plate around a pot of hummus. Cheap (just use whatever veges you have and hummus is nice and cheap!) and easy!

Tossing up fairy bread or the celery and carrot sticks.. Decided against club sandwichs- too much work! (Lazy much?)

I say go with your original idea of club sammies. At the end of the day you can't please everyone, at least there will be something there that you know you will want to eat

And don't worry, you are going to be an AWESOME mummy!!!

I like the vege sticks and dip idea... it's healthy and there always seems to be a mass of sweet stuff at those htings.

Although fairy bread.... YUM!

Haha, Maya, your post made me laugh - I guess you're one of the few who's actually allowed to be on OB at work! (Not that I don't, but in my lunctimes / morning tea breaks!)

I'd do the veges / dip, cos it's so easy. I would pass on the hummus, though, like caliandjack said they say to avoid it (the tahini can be an issue) I'd just one of those cashew pesto ones or something - yum!

For "bring a plate" type things I just go with something I love, at least that way I'm guaranteed to like at least one of the plates  Don't work yourself up too much about it, the whole "bring a plate" thing is very casual.

And, $25 is HEAPS to spend on it

I don't think anyone ever took anything savoury to our classes. We had a lot of cakes and biscuits and chocolate slices.

Savoury muffins are always good. Cheese and crackers with dip? Sausage rolls are always a hit too (heated before you left home and wrapped in tinfoil and a towel should keep it warm enough, doesn't have to be piping hot). Or the idea of vege sticks and dips is great too.

Hmmm this thread is starting to make me peckish

Yeeks don't buy a muffin tin to do mini muffins chick just get the little cupcake outers (whatever they're called I forget) and line them up on an oven tray. Thats all I do coz I only have texas size muffin trays.

I super like the dip idea - maybe get a packet of rice crackers to go with the carrots and celery??

Just in case you want to make cookies, this recipe to fairly fail safe and ALWAYS goes down a treat. Whenever I make them for bring a plate we never get left overs. Plus you can make them a bit smaller and it will make HEAPS.

This is a fantastic cook recipe that creates a thick cookie that is crunchy on the outside and soft on inside. Furthermore it is not overly sweet like I have found other ‘chewy cookie’ recipes to be.

Yvonne's Evil biscuits

Preheat oven to 180 degrees fan bake

INGREDIENTS

¾ cup white sugar
¾ cup brown sugar
175 grams butter
1 egg
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 pinch of salt
2 ¾ cups plain flour
½ to 1 cup of chocolate chips (nuts or dried fruit if you prefer)

METHOD

Cream together the sugar and butter.

Add the egg, baking soda and salt then stir well to mix.

Add the flour and mix in well, the dough will appear to be quite dry.

Add the chocolate chips.

Press in to tight patty’s approx ¾ inch thick and form round.

Cook on grease proof paper (remember if you clean and store the grease proof paper you can use it again

Cook for 10 – 12 minutes.

Asparagus rolls. Easy and not too many ingredients. You could do some with ham if you want for the non preggie ones.

I always do a paper plate so there are no dishes to worry about and you can leave it behind. There is always too much food so don't go overboard. Envision what you and hubby are going to eat and match it.

On a side note, I remember a mag article, either Next or a baby mag, that did a special on baby shower food. 80% of the food was not on the PG safe list - couldn't believe it!

I like the idea of chips/crackers/veges and dip. I always eat that!
