Cian's got to go into hospital tomorrow for a circumcision because of a condition he has - we only got the appointment on Friday due to a cancellation and the hospital said they'd send out all the info we'd need, but we haven't received anything!! 
I'm assuming he'll be under a general anaesthetic but does anyone know the rules. I rang the hospital tonight and they said it'll be "nil by mouth" but couldn't tell me when that starts (ie: now, midnight?) or what it involves (obviously no food, but can i give him milk or water? and how soon before the op?). His operation could be as early as 8am depending on what else they have on. I've never even been to hospital myself so have absolutely no idea what to expect!! any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated - i know it's only a small op but i'm really nervous! ------------- Anita Mum to Cian (Aug 08), Josh (Jun 10) http://lilypie.com">

We have not had the hospital experience but DS had to have his tear duct operated on when he was 1 year old. He had to be nil by mouth as had a general anaesthetic. It was from midnight and no water or milk was allowed either. They made sure we were first up - so he would have been done around the same time as your child - 8am. Hope this helps. It is scary to see them go under - I had to hold him to help soothe him while the gas mask (man that sounds terrible but I don't know what else to call it  ) was on his face. Once he was out, I left and they got started.

If it is a general then 1 parent will be able to go into thearte with him dressed in scrubs to help with the administor of the general, and you will be able to meet him in recovery afterwards as well. Nil by mouth is usually midnight before the op and no fluid from 4am but please don't quote me on that. You could ring your gp and speak to your nurse to get more info. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

My DD had hernia repair surgery (a hole in the lower abdominal wall) when she was four weeks old. She was bf then, and I wasn't allowed to feed her after 4am - the op ended up being at 11am, but luckily she slept a lot at the time so wasn't too grizzly. I didn't go in with her, but I was in the recovery room and bf her as soon as she came out - the op lasted an hour and her general was light so she was waking at that stage.
We were in Wellington Hospital, and they kept her overnight just for observation as she was so young. The nurses were all really lovely, kept us informed and were so kind and thoughtful. That was my first hospital experience (apart from giving birth!). Don't know if that helps, but all the best for tomorrow

I had surgery a couple of months ago and was nil by mouth after midnight as I had to be at hospital by 7am, operation was at 11am. If you don't have to be there by the afternoon you can have a light breakfast but I can't recall what time you have to stop drinking. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

thanks for the help guys  . i gave him his last milk at 7.30pm but got a bit told off from the nurse for having him wait so long for a drink so guess he could've had one early in the morning... all went well though and he didn't seem too phased about missing breakfast!------------- Anita Mum to Cian (Aug 08), Josh (Jun 10) http://lilypie.com">
