Wow. I'm impressed.. I can hardly even sew a button on
I have a sewing pile though!
DH's jeans have been on the 'sewing pile' for months now. He just keeps wearing them, throwing them in the wash, then they go back on the pile. And the pocket is still falling apart on them... Soon, they'll be beyond repair (if they aren't already) and we'll have to buy him a new pair...
This must be a gene I am missing? A sewing gene?

Wow those things are awesome! I've made all Chelsea's nappies, wipes, 5 sleepsacks (4 from pillowcases, which she no longer fits lol, and one larger merino one - pekemoe style), a zebra costume for a dressup party, umm oh and I have some flanelette fabric to attempt to make some PJs for her, but am still trying to figure out how to do the elastic for the pants before I start coz don't want to stuff it up! Oh and I made her a toy when she was younger out of a buscuit tray with random bits of material around it Oh and reversible dress (when she was younger too)
Now to find pictures...
Reversible dress side 1
side 2
Asleep in one of her pillowcase sleepsacks
zebra costume (she's the one in the pool - hehe a bit weird but it did the trick!)
merino sleepsack, still fits her
will have to take a pic of all her nappies later after they've been washed

Wow Rachel love what you have done. I was wanting to make some nappies for Oliver as well but then i brought some 'real nappies' now i kinda don't need any more. But i think i might get some PUL and make pretty (hmm hes a boy so maybe pretty is the wrong word) covers for them cos white is a bit plain. If hes gonna be in cloth i want it colorful lol.
with the elastic just fold over the top of the pants 1.5cm and then fold over about 2 or 3 cm depending on the width of the elastic, sew around that but leave a bit where you can thread the elastic through. then get a nappy pin and pin it to the elastic and use that to thread it through the tube (way easier than trying to thread the plain elastic). when it is right through sew the ends together then sew up the bit where you left the gap to thread the elastic and your done.
I did most of that yesterday when Oliver was sleeping or on his playmat. I am lucky to have a pretty good sleeping little boy.
I have been thinking of getting into knitting, i want to knit some booties.

RE photos from the FAQ thread:
How do I post pictures?
First you will need to upload the pictures somewhere else on the internet. Try for example Photobucket, Flickr, or your Facebook account if you have one. Some of the photo sharing sites (including Photobucket) will provide IMG code for you to copy and paste. Otherwise you can post any pic from anywhere on the internet by right clicking on the picture, selecting ‘Properties’, copying the address details that come up, then use the little button with a pic of a tree on it to the top right of the ‘post reply’ box to paste those address details. (Or simply enclose the address between [ IMG ] and [ / IMG ], without the spaces.)
You can test that you've entered the right code by clicking on 'Preview Post' before you post your reply.

i went to the emporium in manukau and they had parka nylon, they had thin stuff and thick stuff. I got the thick one, it is black with white on the inside.
The one on the left kinda just folds over, the inside bit goes up further than that outside bit so it is pretty secure. the one on the right has a zip, and the small one is the same as the one on the left (apart from the bottom flap goes over top of the top one which was a mistake but still works fine just not as well as the other way around) except it also has velcro to keep it closed.

I own a sewing machine too but haven't really used it all that much - where I'm currently living there isn't much space to set it up and just experiment!
However, I do like to get crafty in other ways - and while I haven't actually completed anything for this bubs yet I've done other stuff for nieces and friend's babies (sadly I usually forget to take photos! oops).
This is a wall-hanging I did for my niece:
And I knitted this matinee dress, but haven't given it to anyone as the sizing is a bit wonky!
While technically this wasn't for a child, I knit toys too - this was a trophy for the boys at work who held a golf day:
Soooo, I'd definitely be interested in a sub-topic for DIY!

If you place a piece of tissue paper between the top piece of PUL and the foot it should help (then tear out once you're done) and the bottom piece should be helped through by the feeddogs.
Awesome creations ladies!

With sewing PUL it makes a difference if the shiny side is faced up or down too with how much slipping and pulling you get. I found when making nappies and stuff that shiny side down was always easier.

With bibs I always like a waterproof material on the back, it sucks having bibs that don't have that and then having to change their top cause liquid has soaked through. Waterproof nylon and PUL are both good options. Nylon is cheaper though.

Ahhh genius with the tissue paper...will give it a whirl again...
So the bibs are top stitched one might say..I liked doing them that way too (inside out) except that the hole to turn inside out was a bit small (I added bamboo to suck up the moisture). Then tried zig zag and the last one had bias binding which looked pretty good. except it was a bit skinny so the back didnt look that flash where i missed it ooops!

Wow, I love the knitted things! The fruit looks so cool. I thought the zebra was a small poodle in a knitted suit at first glance lol (maybe because I once dressed my small poodle in a knitted suit....)
The tissue idea is fantastic!! It really works!!
I'm am off to spotlight to get more supplies today.
For bibs I have used nylon backing, microfibre in the middle and flanellette on the front. Only problem is the flanellette gets stained really easily. They can go mouldy too if they are left damp for a few days. But other than that, they really soak up a lot of moisture. I used bias binding (what ever it's called) around the edges, it's pretty fiddly though, next time I plan to just do a small zig zag around the edges and let it fray a bit.

The cuffs aren't as uneven as they look lol, but the waistband is! Never the less they are my first pair of pants and they'll do the job

Yay for handmade things! Porce I LOVE your stuff! Mum is making the pumpkin hat at the moment for the new baby :D I cant knit to save myself :P I made a wall hanging last night so i'll post pix when I mount it etc.
Does anyone have a pattern for onesies for newborns? my googling has failed and i cant find what I want. Happy to pay for photocopy costs and postage! Net links are good too.
www.sewingpatterns.com is a great resource as well. you have to pay for the patterns, but most of them are downloadable in PDF form - you print them out and stick them together to make the pattern. they range from $2.99USD to $6.99USD on sale. I've got HEAPS from there :D So much cheaper than getting them from spotlight etc etc (burda, butterick, vogue etc, all the proper brands) the $2.99 ones work out at about 4 bux with a crap exchange rate.

Porcelina, you are amaaaazing.
My knitting "skills" are a bit basic, but I managed to knit my first actual thing (by that I mean something that wasn't a plain square). It's quite big so might be a toddler hat as opposed to a baby hat.
I'm making another one. Love knitting, but could do with some more skill!

Those pants look great, I'm going to get some fabric and make some for Esme in the next few weeks. |
I think so too, now I'm feeling quite inspired, except I've only ever made a bag before. Are they easy enough for a novice? You guys are awesome, you've made so many cool things my head is spinning I want to sew too! Are bibs easy? I go through so many of them and just want some little ones that don't dangle down so far for dribble and a wet bag too and one of those night nappies... ok I'm getting a bit carried away ;)
Mum made Cooper a merino sleeping bag which is really cool and some tops with the leftover material.

And a cat bib that I made
Made other things too but haven't taken pics of them...knitted cardis and other sewing. Plus made some wall things for DS room with Classic Pooh, and Mum and me made this cool as touch and feel quilt when we were waiting for me to go into labour!

TaliP, what do you use on the outside of the nappies? Is it just patterned PUL or something over PUL? They are gorgeous.
Aren't we all a talented bunch in here

Ive just got some merino and cotton to make DS a sleeping bag but havent started yet, im scared ill muck it up! The pattern looks OK but I want to make a few changes like snaps instead of velcro and ties so need to think it through first. I might try tomorrow if he has any decent sleeps.

Chickoin, it is patterned pul, can get some good stuff over here in Aussie tho some of that stuff I got from Wigglebums who I don't think are about anymore?
Bex, no, it doesn't have car seat holes coz not really cold enough over here to need to have him in it early evening if we went out...but it would be easy peasy to add, all they would be are giant buttonholes! Small zigzag close together two rows of it and then cut the hole open...does that make sense?
Huntersmama how did you go? It is pretty easy really tho most patterns I saw were for non lined and had bias binding, I didn't use bias and just lined which is sooo easy. Even the zip was easy and that was the second time ever of doing a zip....if you don't know how to do anything then youtube is your friend lol!
BriandOli, she looks pretty pleased with herself, that material would have been tricky to sew!
gorgeous blanket 2xmummy...I am sure your little girl will be super snuggly in that!
ETA photo of new nappies
grr is posting huge so try again

All done!! Those snaps were a real pain, I hadnt used that type before and dont think I will again. I left the right side and bottom open for easy access and was planning to use snaps but might try a zip or velcro?

Looks cool! Where did you get the cool stripy material...I found it hard to get anything cool.....esp for boys!
Yeah a zip would be good, mine doesn't go all the way round the bottom coz I dunno where you get ginormous zips from (plus that sounded too tricky haha), mine is only 55cm long but is long enough I reckon....also used a non open ended on which might be a pain when he is older so I am gonna put a tab to cover over the zip puller thing with a snap on it so he cant fiddle..
Trying again with new napp pics

Wow, you are all so clever.
I have only really just started making stuff for my girls (not exactly babies anymore :P)
Still would love to learn to knit one day but at the moment its just me and my sewing machine..
a petti-skirt and tights
the tutu and headpiece(which we lost moments later in a freak storm :( )
I am sure I have made heaps more, I just can't remember what...

ohhh, I have sewing machine envy. I haven't sewed since I left home 10 years ago, but since I've had DD I keep wanting to! Mum just gave me a couple of little dresses I made for my baby sister when I was 10

I got the fabric from a little shop in Onehunga - cotton was only $8 a metre and is really good quality. Merion was $20 a metre which I thought was OK. I got a metre of both but have heaps left over so am looking for a pattern to make some little merino pants for DS.
Might try the zip then. I could always sew the bottom or the side up I guess.

Those hand warmers are goooooooorgeous, *almost* makes me want to learn how to knit something more complex than a scarf.
TaliP, I have heard the aussie sites are great for nappy material but I can't find any that beat the price of Greenbeans. I think the main issue is that we are way over in Perth so postage price is crazy high. I think I will make an order from gb this week actually.
Awwwww, Morgan, Bri and mini-Daizy are so cute! I love girly clothes.
