I've got a whole series of weddings coming up, and I'm getting a bit worn down by my wee refluxer, so I'd like to try getting her on a bottle occasionally so I can go out. I'll be using expressed breastmilk and I really want to keep BF her for at least another year so I'm a bit nervous. I don't want her to prefer the bottle!

So with that in mind, what is the best bottle to use that is similar to BF and doesn't let the milk down too easily?

Any other advice or experiences? If it's a silly idea, I can get away with taking her to the weddings etc.

tommee tippee closer to nature looks most like boobie, just stick with a slow teat so its not too easy to get milk

Yep those are the ones we use. Try her on one as soon as possible, the older she gets it seems the less liekly she will take it. We had terrible trouble trying to get Isla to take a bottle- I had to go outside while DH fed her. Aiden only has the occasional- like once a week bottle of EBM, but will take it fine. Im stocking up the freezer so I can do to wedding at easter and hens night this sat without him!

Lots of people recommended the tommee tippee bottle to us but using the bottle tends to make Kiara's reflux worse. Not sure why - maybe still drinks too fast? So we're going to leave it for a few more weeks then try again. Definitely try it before you HAVE to use it though to see how she goes. Your girl is a little bit older - I'll be interested to hear how she gets on.

Mac won't take the Tomme Tippe closer to nature bottle so I've just been using a regular bottle with a "normal" slow flow teat and he's taken to it quite nicely.
He's had no nipple confusion either. This far on in the piece it tends not to become an issue as far as I'm aware.

We have just used the bottles that came with the steriliser and breast pump we bought (a Phillips Avent) and he is fine with it. It does take about 10min for him to take the bottle and realise what he's supposed to do with it, but once he does he drinks absolutely fine. We've had no problems at all with nipple confusion. I had to express and put him on the bottle all day a couple of weeks ago for our wedding and we had no problems with him taking the bottle and then back to breast at the end of the night.

My plunket nurse also said to introduce the bottle before 12 weeks, otherwise they can refuse to take it if introduced after this time

Good luck

we started off with TT closer to nature.. and no problems either...

I have kept offering DS a bottle once at night with expressed B/milk to keep him used to it.. so that i dont have to worry when the time comes to leave him from time to time....

also a nice full belly before night sleep.. (my supply really drops off in the evenings)

Good Luck ... i would suggest trying it a few times (NOT YOU) before the weddings etc..

I don't think when you introduce a bottle has anything to do with whether they will refuse or not take one later. DS2 had his first bottle at week 6 and refused all bottles from 4.5 months. DS1 on the other hand had his first bottle at 4 weeks and never refused one. DS1 had Avent, DS2 had TT Closer to Nature. We were syringe feeding ebm to DS2 at one stage....tedious but it avoids the potential for nipple confusion. Kellymom has heaps of info on alternatives to bottles and how to bottle feed a bf baby if you want to have a look

We tried all the tricks to get DS2 to take one and in the end everyone was getting so stressed out that we just stopped offering. Funnily enough though, offered him a bottle of water when he was about 13 months old and he drank it.

Chuchu teats/bottles worked for us, after trying avent and pigeon bottles. (the baby has to suck rather than the milk just dripping out) It was quite a mission getting our girl to take the bottle, but the bouncer seemed to work for a while, rather than holding her. You can try heating the teat in hot water as well, and try and get someone else to feed her rather than you. good luck

Both mine have had one bottle of EMB from week one, and no problems with nipple confusion / preferrence. I used both TT closer to nature and Avent bottles and they took both and the little hospital bottles too. I've heard of alot of bubs who won't take a bottle when its been left til they're older, so I'd start sooner rather than later too.

Thanks. DH tried her on a Tommy Tippie one at the weekend and she took it no problems. She did kind of give him a look that said "hey, how come you've been hiding your boobs from me all this time?" but it was very cute
