My partner & I had unprotected sex at least 3x in January when I was due to be ovulating. We aren't really TTC but just figure that when it's meant to happen then it will!
My cycle is always 28days & my LMP was 04.01.2010, so I would have been due for my next period on 01.02.2010. To date 23.02.2010 I still have not menstruated.
So far I have taken 3 HPTs - all NEGATIVE. First test @ 08.02.2010 (1week late for period), second test @ 15.02.2010 (2weeks late for period) & third test yesterday 22.02.2010 (3weeks late for period).
I had 1 blood test taken nearly a week ago now 17.03.2010. The results came back NEGATIVE - the Dr told me the hCG level was about 2. He advised though that if I still havent had my period within a week to come back for more bloods, as it may have been too early to tell.
Today I thought my period had arrived when I noticed some really light, watery, brown discharge when I wiped after going to the toilet. There's been no blood since then though & after some research it sounds like this MAY have been implantation bleeding??
I dont know what to think. I sort of feel pregnant. My nipples are a bit sore, my back is aching a wee bit & I feel nauseous. I've never been pregnant before though so I'm not really sure if what I'm feeling is right or not?
I've had nurses tell me that they know of cases where both HPTs & blood tests didnt show a positive result until 8-10weeks pregnant. I've also talked to a couple of mums who have experienced similar situations.
I have a slip for a blood test clipped up on the fridge but I'm not sure if I should get it taken now or wait a couple of days yet - to allow for hormones to increase (if I AM pregnant) - for more definite results?!
Am I going CRAZY? Is there anyone out there who can relate to what I'm talking about or has been through something like this in the past? My partner and I don't want to get excited over nothing. I just wish I knew whether I was or not.
Any help/support/comments would be appreciated right now. Thanks so much.

Do the blood test. hcg levels are meant to double every 2 days so if it were about 2 last time if you were preggers it definitely would have risen by now.

Hi jessrich
Welcome to OB! I agree with kebakat, definitely do the test as your HCG will have risen a lot in a week if you are pregnant.
All the best!!

Thanks kebakat & MrsEmma.
I think I'll go get the blood test done tomo or Friday. I really dont know what to think though after hearing so many stories about people being pregnant despite negative blood results.
I guess I'm also worried that I might be disappointed if the results come back negative again & if they are/I'm not pregnant, then where the bloody hell (mind the pun) is my period?!
Anyone out there still had a perfectly healthy pregnancy despite low hCG levels? Or even been told that you're NOT pregnant only to find out the Dr's were wrong?!

Blood tests are conclusive as far as detecting a pregnancy goes. If you are pregnant you will have hcg in your system simple as that. hcg levels can vary from pregnancy to pregnancy, person to person but a blood test is conclusive, if its there it will be detected. I agree with __H__ get it done today or tomorrow, then you will have the results before the weekend.

jessrich with my pregnancy I took some HPT's early on and they were negative, took another later on with a barely there positive so off to the GP. She did a HPT and it was negative but sent me for bloods (because I wanted to know for absolute sure) my HCG was low but it was there, my GP still didn't confirm if I was pregnant or not and didn't bother sending me for more tests. I had no idea how much HCG I was supposed to have etc. - I was so not impressed, she was a shocker looking back on it.
Anyway, I changed GP's and got more tests done not long after and I was pregnant
I know what you mean about not really wanting to know in case it's negative, it's so nerve racking but all you can do is try again and see what happens.
FX for you

Thanks __H__ I will definitely have my bloods taken tomo or Friday morning. Our blood lab is pretty efficient here so I usually get results within the same day.
Kebakat, I understand what you're saying re hCG. I was confused though - my Dr told me the results came back negative from my last blood test (17.02.2010) - but added "there was a very little amount of the hormone present, just not enough to confirm pregnancy." That's why I've been researching... perhaps my hCG level was low then because we tested too early?
MrsEmma I can completely relate! When I saw the nurse last week after 2x negative HPTs, she told me that "HPTs are pretty reliable" & that it was a "waste of money to keep ordering blood tests." I couldnt believe her atttitude. She asked me why I want to know so badly/told me that if I'm not considering a termination then it's really not that urgent to find out. That's when I demanded to see the GP & he had no problem giving me another slip to have more blood work done.
Thank you all for your comments. The wait is just the worst part! I think I will get my bloods done tomo morning.
Would still appreciate any other advice/support from anyone else out there :)

Depending on the doc some will confirm a pregnancy with hcg above 2, some above 5. It depends what the lab gives them with the result too. Some just put <5 for example and that can mean 4.9 or 0.1 if you get what I mean which is why they don't wanna confirm it with a level so low.
If you go get more bloods done and get the same result and it hasn't risen then you probably have something screwy going on with your cycle this time.

A friend of mine had neg HPT's & BT so her Dr did an internal & found sh was pg, & then off for a scan & she was 4mth pg.
Ask for a scan to be done as it will pick up a heart beat after 7 weeks. Do your BT first.

Kebakat, I've got my fingers crossed that my next bloods show a higher hCG level but will keep everyone posted. If they're negative again though then I'd really like to know if something else is maybe going on!
Thanks so much to Jazzy for your comment. I know that it's not common but I've heard other examples of what you're saying - where people have had negative HPTs & BTs but still never got a period - then gone for an ultrasound & found that theyre about 12weeks along! Just goes to show that Dr's arent always right.
Friends & family are telling me to trust my instincts but I really dont want to get my hopes up.
Will let everyone know when I go for my bloods.

JR it's not the level of the hcg number that is relevant, it's the doubling/tripling over a set time period (usually 48-72 hours in the early months) that is important.
I had really high levels in one of my pregnancies but they didn't double over 72 hours - and I lost that one. Yet in another pregnancy I had low levels and they pretty much quadrupled in 24 hours! Yet I lost that one too.

I don't know, she felt pg, it was her second. She went to the dr several times & had a few BT's & did several HPT & all neg. Who knows why these things happen but they do.
Look at the ones who have AF & don't even know they are PG.

I've been told that some normal pregnancies can have quite low levels of hCG & still deliver perfect babies.
Caution must be used in making too much of hCG "numbers". Ultrasound findings after 5-6 weeks of pregnancy are much more predictive of pregnancy outcome than hCG levels.
I've got more to add to my story now too.. late this afternoon when I went to the loo I noticed a some gooey stuff on the toilet paper & found a length of stretchy, clear discharge. It wasn't like the mucous that I get when ovulating, it was like a funny jelly! I keep checking in case there's any blood but so far nothing. Could this be a sign of pregnancy?
|

I got a call from the Dr this morning to say the blood test result came back "equivocal".. Open to two or more interpretations.. Now I'm just really frustrated!!
I have to go back on 04.03.2010 for more bloods if my period still hasnt arrived. That would make 2months since last period.

Good Monday morning everyone!
Still no period to date. I keep noticing small amounts of discharge every now & then though so not sure what this could be? It's different to the usual stuff I get when ovulating & doesn't have the same "smell" to it (sorry TMI).
Shezzey they didn't say what the hCG levels were in numeric form but I think freckle is right, "equivocal" usually means the results were between 5-25.
This morning I have been to the toilet so many fricken times! I've had a number of UTIs before so thought it might be another one of those honeys coming on - except I'm not experiencing any real pain..?
Instead of going in to see the Dr on 04.03.10 I might wait until the start of next week (08.03.10). I'm just so sick of the nurses being rude/thinking I'm crazy & I thought if I leave it a little bit longer my period might just arrive anyway.. that's if it is on its way?!
I'm usually a very impatient person so all this waiting is going to be a mission! I'll need all the support I can get

Jess - I'd say if the results were between 5-25 the other day a HPT would give you an answer now... I reckon POAS I think you must be/have been preg to have got that BT result and maybe you oved later hence the levels being low...

Its frustrating, if im not UTD then I just want my AF to come so I my body can get back on track , up until now , my cycles have been regular, its very bizarre .
So I really really hope you get some answers soon !!!

Hi Jessrich
When i was UTD with my son I my CM had a different smell (not offenive or anything, just different) and I had more of it, so I think that is a positive sign.
If I were you I would POAS again!

freckle I'm very tempted to do the POAS test but I'm just going to try & be patient. If my AF doesnt show up by the end of this week, I'll go & get more bloods done next Monday. I'm sick of HPT's anyway to be honest!
jazzy you just reminded me that I wanted to ask everyone a question.. I was going to ask you all how do I figure out how far along I am if (if I *am* pregnant)? My last mense was 04.01.10 with ovulation occuring around 20.01.10. Do I calculate from the date of my last AF (making me 8weeks-ish) or from ovulation (in which case I would be nearly 6weeks)?

generally you go by LMP, until a scan proves otherwise. When/if you do confirm pregnancy, since theres some questions over EDD, they will likely offer an early scan to better determine a more accurate EDD

hila1 you're a bad influence! Haha it's sooo tempting, I really want to.. but I think another BFN would be too much for me to handle right now. I'd rather my AF come than see another negative POAS result to be honest. If I'm not preggo I just wish my period would arrive so that we can start over.

I know what you mean about HPT , as tempting as they are , its the thought of seeing another BFN especially when you feel it should have those two lines , that is so off putting .
It would be easier if the BFN was accompanied by AF , at least that way , as you say , you can know exactly where you're at and start over .
Its this inbetween land that sucks .
Did you do a blood test ? I really hope you get some answers soon , I know its frustrating

Sooo.. I ended up going to my appointment early this morning - my partner has had just about enough of this waiting game as me - so he took me in.
The Dr made me do a POAS test... result was a big fat NEGATIVE but he also weighed me & turns out I've put on nearly 5kgs. Then he tested my urine for any abnormalities & apparently I have a UTI - although I havent got any burning or pain at the moment? Anyway, he advised that this could be affecting the HPT/giving a false negative, but he wants to make 100% sure so I'm having more blood tests today.
They will be testing my blood for hCG levels as well as a whole lot of other stuff in case there's something else wrong. If the results come back unclear (in terms of hCGs) but the rest of me is okay (i.e. there are no other irregularities) the Dr said he will consider sending me for an U/S (to check my ovaries etc. OR look for a bubba.. if there is one)
To be honest, I've pretty much told myself that I'm not pregnant now. I have another appointment tomo afternoon at 2.45pm to discuss the results.

Progesterone has be over 2 to indicate that ovulation may have taken place... if it isnt then no point testing for pregnancy really as you cant be if you have not ovulated. Ideally to confirm ovulation they like it to be over 10, up over 20 is even better....

Hi ladies.
I have just about come to the end of my wick.
I have just come back from the clinic for my blood results. Turns out they DIDNT test my hCG levels this time.. instead they did a complete blood count & a whole lot of other crap (for iron levels & thyroid etc.) which just proved that I'm completely healthy & everything came back normal.
The Dr I saw this avo wasn't my usual GP. She was a really strange German lady. She tried telling me that because my tests are all clear that she can't do anything more & that we'll just have to wait til my period comes. "Sometimes they just disappear," she kept saying. What?! For nearly 3months? Without any explanation? I dont think so, lady!
I kicked up a bit of a stink after being told they didnt check for hCGs & that they werent going to do anything else. I also mentioned my concerns re ovarian cysts... so finally, after she saw I was nearly in tears, they sent a referral through to the hospital here for an ultrasound.
There's a 2-3week wait to hear back about my appoinment for an ultrasound, which isnt great, but it's better than nothing.
To top it all off, as the Dr was sitting at her computer typing some info onto my file, I picked up my cellphone to send my parter a txt message with an update (as I was upset). The bitch snapped at me "Put your phone away! It's not going anywhere, I need to concentrate!"
FML! & I thought I was finally going to have some closure today.. what a way to end the week.

Thanks hila1 I'll try... I just know that I'm going to have this whole thing weighing on my mind though! If I knew I wasnt pregnant I could have a drink or two haha but I'm being good just in case.
My mum suggested that if my AF still hasnt arrived by Sunday that I just go straight to the hospital & say "I'm in pain" & that I need an urgent U/S... but we'll see

I would be complaining to the practise manager... that behaviour is terrible.
On a side note, I do think you need to have your HCG done again AND progesterone levels.. if they are still sitting 5-25 then a scan is definately needed to figure out what the hell is going on in there. If they are less than 5 there are drugs you can be prescribed to bring on AF so you can start again...
Is it possible to go private for the scan??? It will cost but you could have it done next week...
If your doctor wont listen keep searching until you find one that does!!!!

Hi Jess, I have just been reading about your situation you poor thing. Just wanted to let you know I was in a similar situation once with an HCG level of 7. Jess, I've been reading through this and feeling soo sorry for you. What a shocking reaction from the "strange German lady".
After my first m/c my periods disappeared for months. I left it for a few thinking things were just sorting themselves out after the mc when I saw my doctor about it (after doing goodness knows how many HPTs) they tested hormones before sending me to specialist who diagnosed PCOS without the need for any US.
A CBC is one thing but given your symptoms I would have thought they should be testing progesterone, testosterone, Lh (ie hormones) as well as HCG. It seems to me that an US is an expensive and not particularly immediate way of finding out what should be able to be diagnosed straight away from a blood test if they actually test for the right things.
Your description of "symptoms" sounds very like my annovulatory PCOS time. I completely get that by now you probably don't care if you aren't pregnant you just want to get "back on track". Hang in there. FX for you that the US provides the answer.

Thanks to everyone for their support! Tuesday morning now & still no AF.
I had the nurse take some high vaginal swab tests yesterday... just got the results now. Everything is clear - nothing out of the normal - she told me my girlie bits are all happy & healthy!
Snuck in to see my usual GP while I was there yesterday & he ordered me another hCG beta (quantative) blood test. I also told him about the nasty experience I had with the other Dr last week & he seemed to understand. Maybe she's known for it!
Also asked Dr re ovarian cysts. He said U/S is best way to diagnose & he'll try to contact the Radiology department to get me in ASAP.
Will get bloods taken this avo.

Hiya, that's great you are going to get bloods done. You can always go for a private U/S, it normally costs around $150 but you can get it done same day (well in my experience anyway in ChCh). All the best.

I had a call from the Radiology dept. at the hospital to advise that there is a waiting list of 589 patients for ultrasounds... so the soonest they can fit me in is June!
So I took your advice Little_Red & made a private appointment with a clinic. It's an hour's drive from where I am but they booked me in for Friday, 26 March so that's only 2weeks away which is a lot less time to wait!! & it's $165 but I don't mind paying.
Haven't had bloods taken yet, been so busy at work. Will get onto it tomo morning hopefully & have results by Friday.

Hi girls
Sorry I've been away from the thread for so long.. but I finally have some answers!!
I was meant to be waiting for a private scan which was scheduled for this Friday, 26 March. Instead I had massive abdominal/pelvic cramping (more noticeably on the left side) on the afternoon of Friday 12.03.10 so my partner rushed me to ED.
The Drs & nurses in ED were amazing & so so helpful. Finally - people who LISTENED! Long story short: I got sent for an urgent ultrasound which revealed one mother of a cyst on my left ovary. I was given some pain relief & a referral to a Gyno to see the following week.
My period ended up arriving on the Sunday following the ultrasound (14.03.10) - before I had met with the Gyno. I went back to the hospital the next day to let the Drs know & I got sent through for another scan. The sonographer showed me the cyst "breaking up" - instead of one big lump now there were lots of little follicules - so my menstrual cycle was doing its job.
I've been advised that my AF will be a little bit irregular for the next couple of months. The pain is pretty much gone (apparently ovarian cysts give similar symptoms to pregnancy - feeling bloated, weeing heaps, sore boobs/nipples etc) but I have to go back to the hospital if it gets worse. Otherwise, I'm going to be fine!
I was a wee bit upset that it was 150% confirmed I wasn't pregnant.. but I'd actually come to terms with that a few weeks ago.. I knew it was something else.
Oh & I made sure the sonographer sent copies of my scans to my GP. The hospital staff couldnt believe that I'd basically been brushed off & told "not to worry" & left it at that. Cant wait to write a complaint!
Sooo for now we're just gunna let everything be for a while. We're still having unprotected sex but not worrying so much about trying to conceive.. like I said at the start - if it happens, it happens. Will keep everyone up to date though.
Thank you all for your comments & support over the past couple of months. I'm so glad to have found this site & will definitely keep following!
Good luck to everyone out there trying - sending lots of babydust your way.
xx

Hey Jess, im so glad you FINALLY got some answers, sorry they weren't the more exciting ones of pregnancy , but glad your menstrual cycle is getting back to normal , which will help when you do start trying :-)
And definetly make a complaint , things could have ended a lot worse due to their negligence
