I used to have one when my DD1 was very little, but it has since been relegated to a storage container in my basement!
Whilst they do get babies being carried, they are not very ergonomically sound for them, I'd suggest having a look at the Slingbabies website but this article in particular:
http://www.slingbabies.co.nz/Site/Positioning_2.ashx - http://www.slingbabies.co.nz/Site/Positioning_2.ashx
About halfway down the page there is more detail on why frontpacks like the Elite are not as suitable as other carriers.
So my advice is to have a look around the Slingbabies website at the different types of carriers, and then feel free to ask any questions you might have (here) or even come to a meeting.

You are crossing the shoulder straps at the back, right?

Yip you need to cross over the shoulder straps. I made the same mistake & wondered why they never stayed up.

Just wanted to second Hippymamas post - Do have a look at the slingbabies site, it is great, lots of info! Also have a look at the Babywearing Thread in the Photo Gallery, there are lots of pics of different carriers. If you're wanting something similar in style to an Elite (but something alot more comfy for you and bubs) look out for the Ergo, Manduca, Beco, Patapum...I've got a Beco which I can comfortably front carry my 10.5kg DD in, also back carries comfortably too.. also Hippymama has got a great Mei tai styled thingee (sorry hippymama, it's late, right wording eludes me ) called a Kozy Carrier. And they're pretty Wraps are awesome too - we still use ours on occasion.
The slingbabies site has all the vendors who sell the carriers listed, many or perhaps all are/have online outlets so very easy to order
Gawd, I sound a bit pushy.. I'll leave now - but take a look
