Okay so I took my boy to the Dr's cause his penis is red and the foreskin a bit swollen. She said he had an infection which I was expecting but she told me I should be pulling the foreskin back and cleaning down there.
I can't remember who but I remember being told not to pull his foreskin back before until he was much older.
So wise ladies. Am I meant to be pulling it back to clean or not??
I have cream for it at the moment because of the infection but I want to know what to do once that is cleared up.
Thanks for the advice.

I'm almost positive that you shouldn't be pulling it back and that it doesn't properly 'go back' until they're a bit older.
Sorry but that goes against everything I've heard.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right to me. I've always been told not to pull the foreskin back and clean under there! I think a general wash down there is enough. Man I get concerned with all the conflicting advice that is given out by GPs!

Could you try ringing Healthline for a second opinion. I was always told not to go poking or pulling anything down there - but you'd think your dr would know best (although it certainly sounds iffy to me)

Daniel has had a couple of infections down there.. one was cause he was playing with it so much a piece of fingernail broke off and got stuck
Definitely a no no to pull it back.
Was the stuff they gave you the stuff that usually goes in eyes? If so that stuff rocks!

Thank you, you have confirmed exactly what I had been told and thought.
The dr I had today was not my normal dr as she was away so I didn't really trust her anyways.
I'm not going to be pulling it back to clean it. It has never had an infection before so I'll just take it that this is a once off infection and once the infection clears up I'll go back to doing as I've always done.
I did gently pull it a little back to get the cream on it but only so that all the skin got cream on it not so that it was really pulled back if that makes sense. So might do that to put the cream on??
Eek boys are so difficult and my Dh always just replies with "i don't know I'm not the same as him". Argh. He's closer looking than me!

oooh no dont pull it back! its not properly detached from the head of the penis (which also hasnt formed properly) !
If you need to get a little bit of cream in, you can roll it down a couple of MM, it will go without force and rub the cream in between your fingers and the skin.
Poor wee thing, we're going thru this at the moment as Thomas has super acidic wees even tho he drinks a TONNE of water!

Yes that's what I mean I sort of rolled it back a few mm to get the cream on.
Wow that dr really was a strange one.

I'm sitting here feeling very squirmish!! Although my son is older, he had an infection down yonder and we had to take him to the specialist at the hospital to have it retracted.......
Needless to say I do not want to re visit that day again!!
I was told that in some cases the foreskin does not separate from the penis and this causes infections, it does have a flashy technical name that I think I have removed from my memory!
It is supposed to separate naturally but there are a minority that don't, they put the anaesthetic cream on him, that didn't work all that well and I won't horrify you with the rest, lets just say my boy took a week before he stopped wetting and soiling himself as he was petrified to go to the toilet as it hurt so much........
Still a drama to get him to try to retract it a tiny little way as the doctor had intructed us do to.

Ow sounds painful. Yeah leave it until they figure it goes back themselves, believe me they will let you know when they figure that out and by then they are old enough to clean it themselves.

I think it's called Phimosis. There are varying schools of thought on when to 'treat' it. Some say that if foreskin can't be retracted by about age 4 then it needs seeing to, but others think that you can leave it until they are teenagers to see if it releases on its own.
