I am trying to find a prepay plan for my teen daughter and wondered if anyone on here has done the research and can recomend a plan. We have vodafone but since there is no coverage at her school and their support services (like basic top up) leave a lot to be desired I have decided to swap.
Are there any prepay texting plans that are good? Certain amount of texts for a certain fee etc. We are hoping to get away with less than $20 a month. So if anyone is on a plan and can recommend before I head off into the realms of internet info let me know. |

Telecom CDMI do TXT2000 for $10, thats just to other telecom though. They also have a TXT500 to any network for $10. You can still pick up "old" phones on trademe etc for cheap. I wouldn't recommend going to their new network yet!!
She shouldn't need her phone at school, I'd almost say if shes getting a phone it'll be good not to have reception at school, cos even if she says she won't use her phone she will!!! (I'm 20, not long finished school, trust me I KNOW! lol, I been there done it myself!). I don't know of any schools who even allow phones at lunch time etc! Might be worth to find out what network her friends are on- eg if most are them are on telecom, it's probably best to stick with telecom! I know for me at school, the 1000 texts wasnt enough. If you are willing to fork out for a new XT network phone, they have unlimited texts for $12 to any network. I wouldn't recommend going to 2degrees or anything yet, they just DON'T have the support networks etc needed just yet |

Thanks for the info. We already have a phone for her and just need a sim to put in. Does xt do that or do you have to have their phones.
I would love for her not to have a phone but she is at a school 40 mins drive away and a bus stop 5 mins drive from the house so coordination is so much easier with the phone. The bus doesn't leave until 5pm from school too so they are allowed to use them at lunch and after school. In the states we just added her to my plan for an extra $10 a month and we shared minutes etc. So much easier. Off to check out telecom. |

My teenage daughter has xt ... there's a few different texting plans but the unlimited for $12 is the best if she texts lots. Plus when she tops up she gets a certain amount extra credit depending on how much she puts on. The only prob is they still seem to be having a few probs with network every now and then. My daughter takes her phone to school too for the same reason 
I don't think you can put an xt sim in a vodafone though... we tried on one of ours and it didn't work... ------------- mum to 3 lovely girls :D |

The phone is unlocked. Has been used with a company in the usa, prepay vodafone and should be fine with any sim card. We called our original provider in the usa and they gave us a code so we could use another sim in it. My phone the code wouldn't work so took it to someone and $25 later mine was fine too.
With yours freckle try calling vodafone to see if they can unlock it for you. No point wasting a perfecctly good phone. You can only try 3 times until the phone is permanently locked apparently. (I haven't had it happen just was warned my the lady who gave me the codes) Hope this helps. $12 unlimited texts looks like the way to go as long as the network stays good. I spose she could carry her vodafone sim with her to use in emergencies. It still has a couple of dollars on it. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Just out of interest I called 2 degrees and they use vodafone for coverage where they don't have their own network so it wasn't worth persuing. Raewyn |

if you have a phone with a sim card you can use it on any of the networks (that use a sim card) but you have to get the phone 'unlocked'- or thats what i was told ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

XT should be fine, it is a pretty good plan. It's not really unlimited texts though, it does say fair use policy applies, so maye keep a eye on how many texts she is sending (would be horrible for them to send you a bill!)
Sorry but I don't believe she won't use her phone at school  I don't know anyone who did! We all got pretty good at texting under the tables keeping eye contact with teachers, its when you continually drop down to look under the table that they get suspicious!!
I also got pretty good at being able to drop it under my kilt when they thought they had snapped me out, and pretty good at walking around with it wedged between my legs! In fact, everyone at school did!!! Oops, I hope theres no high school teachers on here
