Come tell me what you've got and whether you like it or not, and for what reasons.
I was thinking of getting the P&T's bebeHS so it could clip on to the dash I also want to get, but am put off now i've discovered that it doesn't come with a base. I am not convinced I wont go with this option yet, because the idea of clipping capsule to stroller sounds like such a good idea- do I have any advocates for this, or is it really not an issue?
What about Saftey 1st Designer capsules? Any experience with them?

We had a cheapo capsule, no base and it was fine. It pays to ask the shop if you can see if it will fit in your car though. They are fine with that so long as they accompany you out to the carpark lol.
Personally I've sold my capsule and wouldn't bother with it again, too heavy lugging around capsule+bubs. but I know lots of people don't mind and love that

Thanks kebakat. Am also tinkering with idea of going straight to convertable carseat, but figured because it was number 1 coming along that I would still get use out of a capsule. In saying that however, SIL has a bebe and doesn't like it so wont be using it for her second, said I was most welcome to it- maybe I should have a talk to her. Pity we haven't told anyone yet lol. You would think I had a month or two to go given the urgency I have in wanting to sort these things! Must relax- any such chill pills for pregnant women? hehe

We had a capsule that clips into a base in the car which we love! Left it in mum's car yesterday and really found it a pain having to put the capsule in with a seatbelt. We just got one of the milano ones, wasn't expensive or anything. And it clips in to our Steelcraft strider stroller which is a bonus.

Thanks BecM- maybe I need to have a go with putting a capsule in my car with both a base and without and see what I can put up with!
As far as safety goes, what are the arguments for having a base?

I was under the impression you had to have a base if you wanted to use the capsule in the car?
This is my first baby and we've got a milano capsule/pram set and we bought a base seperate (pram was on sale and discounted amount happened to be pretty much same as the base) but the woman at Baby City said we would need a base to use it in the car.

oh dear nkap9 - you dont need a base at all. how rude of that shop assistant, as if it isnt expensive enough first time round.
i tried a base with my third and i didnt like it cause to me the angle was all funny and my baby looked like she was almost standing up.
wth my first i had a capsule - just a standard one, nothing fancy at all. when out and about for longer than a couple of mins i would throw it in a trolley and push bub around in that. wish i had know about snap and go wheels... however by the time i got to the third a capsule was a pain in the butt. the boys wanted to help carry it all the time so i was lugging around a baby, capsule and two boys. i went to a car seat pretty quickly and had no problems.
remember you arent supposed to let babies spend too long in capsules anyway - it can be a hazard in regards to the airway.

both times I have rented a capsule from Plunket. Both times with a base. A few times with each we had to use it with out a base (when in DHs car) and it was such a pain. I would have hated t have done that every time I went out (especially second time with a toddler to get into the car too!)
First time we hired the snap and go wheels and used them twice. They took up more space in the boot than the Phil & Ted and Amy looked really exposed in it. She was quite a big baby and so I got very adapt at transferring her from carseat to p&t cocoon when she was sleeping. Also it was a much more comfortable position for her - as Bizzy said, it is not good for them to be in the capsule for too long.
Not sure what brand - maybe Evenflo??

Personally I wouldnt buy a capsule without a base for safety reasons but thats just me. Our one is a Fisher-Price and goes to 12kg so we will get at least 9 months use out of it with Jackson and when we use for 2 children will make it totally worth it. I think we paid $200 brand new, capsule and base.
Im not a fan of clipping capsules into prams, I dont see the point personally and it cant be good on bubs back to be in a capsule for hours on end.
This isnt our one but its exactly the same just re-labelled Fisher-Price.

Oh forgot to say (sorry I cant edit my other post) we love ours. It can be a bit of a pain to un-clip from the base but thats more to do with the fact we have a small car and not the carseat itself. The anchor harness straps can be a pain but its not a major and you have the same problem with a convertible anyways.

Where are you getting your information regarding safety issues? I have been googling the internet trying to find the research this claim is based on and haven't come across anything.
Does anyone have a link they can give me or an article I can read?
Kind of have to wonder if it's just a sales point given that they're still making capsules that are meeting NZ safety requirements, and people are still buying them. I don't like information that is just based on hearsay.

Thanks jaycee, will take a read.
I didn't find anything on their that said anything about a base being better/safer than a capsule without
I think for convenience sake I will just go with a base anyway.
Still, would like to read something on the safety of bases opposed to non-bases if anyone has found anything??

We have a safety first capsule with base. It's great for use with snap and gos. So easy with the base as well. If you're going to carry the capsule with baby in a far bit then it's very heavy compared to others apparently. Probably the only downside to it I've noticed, besides being a strange khaki colour.

I have a phil & ted bebe and find it great. you get really quick at doing the seat belt each time - only takes about 30 seconds at the most. its nice and light. Plus we have a small car so it works well for us. I usually transfer her to the buggy anyway when going out & about, unless i'm popping into one place or shop in which case i'll take out capsule, as it gets heavy after a while!. But I much prefer to get her out and put her lying flat in buggy, its better for them for longer periods.

I was looking at capsules yesterday, as the sales lady said beware cos if you get one without a base, you might find that it doesn't have the hole for it to be able to sit in a snap and go wheels safely, and it might not be able to sit up on the seat on a shopping trolley!
We will be getting a capsule with a base, simply cos I can't be bothered with having to make sure all the cars have seatbelts long enough to go around! Also its winter, and it'll be quicker to snap it into the base than it would be hanging in the door trying to get the seatbelt done up (especially the first wee while in july/august which is generally pretty sh!t weather!!)

We have a Graco (one with a base). Love it. Can't fault it.
Totally recommend going to talk to your local Baby on the Move rep They are awesome and have loads of knowledge about car seats and will know what will be best for you.

We have a capsule with a base but have never used the base as we don't own a car. We needed one that we could use without the base as I'm in and out of taxis a couple of times a day. Yes, it can be a pain having to do the seatbelt up every time but you get really quick at doing it after the first couple of goes
Callum still uses ours at 14 months, it goes up to 13kg and he is around 12kg at the mo.
I would use the base if we had a car as once it's in, it's in. Then all you need to do is click the capsule onto the base rather than the faff of buckling and checking the belt each time. But that's just me.

We had a capsule & base - can't for the life of me remember what make, but it's a pretty common one, I see loads of Mammas & Pappas out with them lol..
But, after 2 or 3 weeks I really couldn't carry it round, it was so friggen heavy! I ended up just tying our wrap on before leaving home, taking her out and wearing her - so much easier!
So next time I will most definetly be bypassing the capsule and going straight for a convertible Sorry that totally isn't much help on what kind of capsule to get, but thought I'd throw in my 2cents Good luck - and hey, never to early to be thinking about these sorts of things

As you have seen LA we have the MIlano capsule and base. We first of all bougth the Milano pram. THen went back and got the capsule that clips into it. Then after he was born we went back again and got the base.
We thought this was the best because we didn't have to disturb DS if he was asleep in the capsule. So we could clip him for the car to the stroller. But having heard lots of times, you not suppose to keep babies is the capsule for longer than a 1 or 2 hours due to the angle they are sitting. And baies like to strtch out and have a wriggle in their prams......most do anyway.
I have to say that having the base and capsule is fanatstic as our seatbelt didn't reach the whole way around the capsule properly and it didn't feel safe at all.
HOWEVER. If we were do satrt again. I'd definately just go with a convertable carseat and then just a good pram. That way your not wasting money on the capsule and you can just go straight into a convertable where they can be for a good 3 years.
But thats just my own opinion.

Do they fit okay in convertables as new borns? I know they are made for them but they just look so big and well, babies are so little.

Wow this is a fantastic thread, thanks for asking the question LostAmber. I too have been debating if i get a capsule or not. After reading everyones experiences i'm leaning towards a carseat and pram.
We often go to town, go to friends or take the dogs out walking and i wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the buba in a capsule for long as it's not good for them. Thanks ladies for all the great advice.
Now can anyone recommend a good carseat or pram/buggy?

I'm going to go with a Phil and Teds Dash buggy I think. This way when #2 comes along we can attach the toddler seat. As far as buggies go though, you just have to have a look and see what would best fit your lifestyle. I have heard from others though that you do get what you pay for. I would say to go in to various baby stores, have a look to see how small they fold down, how heavy they are, and if they have the features that you personally want. If you are just going to be using it for going around town then the narrower the better as stores don't take particular care in keeping their isle's wide enough for strollers. If you think you will use it to walk the streets etc then you will want something with durable and bigger wheels. I have a Mountain Buggy which I love for the park and beach, it is so easy to push in that regard, but it's heavy and awkward to get in and out of my car so not ideal. I will give this to my parents and they can keep it there for when we visit.
As far as carseats go, I have no idea lol. Again I would just go and have a look at what's out there and see what you like. Given we have two cars I will probably go with one capsule and one carseat; carseat in DH's car and capsule in mine. It's definitely confusing though and I keep changing my mind lol. I will probably get the capsule for free though as SIL is due April and her daughter should near be out of it by the time mine comes along 6 months later. Figure I may as well make use of it!

Good question LA, if you hadn't posted it, its exactly what I'd be doing now!
IMO...Coz its your first I'd get the capsule..Yes there is lugging (I just told myself its good for my arms!) but as you kinda said wee babes look so uncomfy in a big convertable IMO.. Madison did anyway and she was 3months old when I first had to use convertible in DF's car.
This time I'm investing in the Maxi-Cosi capsule + Base.
Purely because in my early days adjusting to less sleep etc I forgot to buckle DD's carseat in a few times I know shocking but I know I'm not the only mummy who has done it..(Actually I know alot who have. *Cough..My Plunket nurse!!!*)
And usually I found you can transfer your sleeping bub easy into a stroller, they loove the walking motion.

Just to throw it out there re buggies - we borrowed my sisters MB, it's a great buggy.. but then I found the joy of baby-wearing At 11mths, we rarely use the buggy, haven't for a loooooong time, so I'm glad we didn't invest in one. Next bubba will be born overseas and we won't be buying another buggy - just a few more carriers
I first bought a Moby wrap when DD was around 7weeks (I think) and from then on the capsule never left the car - we would just transfer her to the wrap. She was like a completely different baby to take out, so settled, would happily snooze for up to 3 hours in the wrap without so much as a grizzle (with the odd quick feed thrown in if neede) And best of all, a good carrier is only a fraction of the cost of a buggy.
Carseats - well you may have seen my 'fanatical' posts about this recently, but please do look into seats and the benefits of finding a seat with a good RFing limit. It has been proven to be far more safer to RF for as long as possible. So with that said, this is where we have decided to spend the bulk of our money. Google is your friend in this instance, search 'extended rearfacing' and there is oodles of info out there to help point you in the right direction.

Can a newborn fit ok into a carseat?
I'm reluctant to buy a capsule would rather hire one for a few months then go straight into a carseat, is this doable.
Interesting feed back regarding wraps etc I've heard positive and negative - I am having a summer baby and wonder if this would make wearing them a bit hot.

We have a baby trendz capsule and love it. A friend loaned it to us and I'm not sure I'd have bought one if I hadn't tried it. We also have the wheels which I've found invaluable. The capsule is heavy now, but i've put a lot of miles on the wheels, partly because at 3 months the lad is only now big enough for the buggy so I took him for walks in the casule and it was great for quick trips shopping as the basket underneath is quite generous. And it's not as if we were out for hours anyway.
Snapping it onto the base is a breeze a nd at coffee group people were a bit jealous as they tried to get their big (and very expensive) strollers and bassinette attachments into the car and baby into car seat while I snapped him in and lifted the wheels in with ease.
The flip side is that their seats will suit for a long time while we need to look at buying a new seat!
