How much spilling is normal, and when should I be worried? I mentioned she was a bit spilly to the doctor at her 6 week jabs but it's got a lot worse since then. Even though I'm using cloth flats every time I hold her or put her down anywhere I'm still getting covered. All the guides say to consult the doctor if your baby is spilling a lot, but what constitutes a lot? TIA -------------

Bummer  Some babies are just spilly, unfortunately. I'm really no expert, but is it basically a liquid burp or are you getting some projectile or through the nose? Is she just putting a little bird-poo like deposit on you frequently, or are what seems like whole feeds coming up?-------------

Most are smallish leaks out of the side of the mouth (the bird poo sized ones), But at least once a day we'll get a projectile one. They're not whole feeds but it seems like the majority of the feeds sometimes. She'll spill then demand another whole feed. The bigger one this afternoon covered my shoulder, completely missing the cloth I had there, and went all down my cleavage and all over her face, hands, and the top half of her bodysuit. Then I put her down after mopping that up and she spilled 10cm out from the side of her face and 1 side of her face was covered. She gets real upset about it if she's lying down but is happier if she's sitting up. Doesn't sound too normal -------------

I'm no expert but is she gaining weight okay and general a happy wee girl?
Lilly would spill large amounts (half a feed or more) every feed but was still gaining 300g a week. She grew out of it. If you are worried though it never hurts to see a doctor. -------------

Oh also Weegee you asked about though the nose. Willow has done this since about 2-3hours after she was born. Is it something to be looked at? -------------

A good rule of thumb I got told was, go measure out a teaspoon of water and spill it on the bench. It often looks like a lot but is really only a teaspoon. Maybe throw a few of those on the bench until you get something equal to the size spills you're getting them you can gauge just how much she is bringing up. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Dd used to projectile vomit all the time. With her it was trapped wind, she didn't like to give it up.
Does she burp soon after the vom ? |

I wouldn't worry unless she's unhappy - it is generally only a problem if they're getting acid coming up too.
You're game to burp her over your shoulder if that's what you do - I've always burped Ava on me knee as I would rather she miss the cloth and go on the floor than all over me and the chair

From what I understand it is only a problem if she is spilling up more than an hour after feeds, or if the spit up often has a cottage cheese consistency.
Or as the others say if she is not gaining weight that might be a concern. my ds is 9 weeks and spills up after most feeds, and probably also about one big spill up a day, it seems to have increased over the past couple of weeks, and I think it's all pretty normal. yay for flat cloths! hehe  -------------

I've asked the MW and plunket nurse about this too, cos I think my girl is very spilly. They said as long as she's growing (she is) and not screaming when she spills (she grizzles a bit sometimes, but rarely screams about it), then its fine. I hear ya! DS was a very spilly baby, I got so sick of constantly cleaning up puke, apologising to everyone he puked on who held him, the washing etc etc It wasn't until he was about 3 weeks old that my MIL suggested putting a bib on him, in my sleep deprived state hadn't even thought of that! It didn't contain it all but at least it usually missed his clothes and went on the couch which was leather (yay!) so easy to wipe up. He puked large amounts after every feed but like someone said if you get a TBS of milk and pour it out on the bench, it looks like a lot but in reality is only 20mls. He would sometimes powerchuck and man that could go some distance! He grew out of that around 8 weeks and finally stopped spilling around 7mths He still occasionally pukes but it's usually if he gets down and crawls around straight after being fed.
We had him on reflux meds (gaviscon and ranitidine) for a while but I stopped them as I didn't feel it was making any difference and didn't want him on medication unnecessarily. He wasn't unsettled with the puking and he was growing well. If I can offer you one bit of advice it's clean any spills on the carpet properly. I had a tendency to mop it up with a dry cloth at the time as it was so constant and mean to go back and clean it properly but would forget and now our lovely new carpet is two toned with bleach stains from the tummy acid

Thanks for all your replies. I think I'll talk to the plunket nurse on tuesday about what to do. Gaviscon seemed to work a little this afternoon but not this evening. -------------
