How on earth do you get it into them without feeling like you're torturing your child? 
DS was on gaviscon sachets. Went to the Dr for a refill, and to see about this cough he'd developed. Cough with no other symptoms, sometimes I thought it was a put on but his voice (cooing etc) was getting hoarse. Dr said the cough was probably reflux related, and we should change him on to ranitidine (1ml, 2xday). First few times I used a syringe - he hates it  . I have to pry his mouth open with one hand, and force feed him by the syringe with the other hand (all the while he's doing everything in his power to get away from me) and then he starts crying.
Then this morning I thought I'd put it in his bottle (he's 100% FF). I split the bottle 60/180 and put it in the 60ml. I had to keep swapping the bottles back and forth to trick him into drinking it. I thought maybe I should have spilt it 120/120 but he's random as to how much he drinks and it's just as likely he wouldn't get through 120ml

We used a large size medicine dropper- from chemist shops fro about $3- and suck the medicine up into the dropper, gently squeeze baby's cheeks where their top and bottom jaws meet, to open their mouth slightly, then slide the dropper along one side of their cheek, and slowly release. Works brilliantly, and have recommended this way to lots of people too with good success! Also we found giving it prior to a feed worked best, and ment she was more keen to open her mouth too, than when she was full from a feed!
We did the same when giving Gaviscon too. Isla needed Gaviscon 6 times a day plus the Ranitidne twice a day, but outgrew her reflux by a year old. |

I must be lucky as DS is quite happy to take his! I always give it just before a feed though so he is usually wanting food so is happy to open his mouth. -------------

Yeah do it before a feed, so much easier! Plus, basically just pin the sucker down, pry open the mouth and squirt it down the cheek. Then keep your finger in their mouth slightly over the tongue. That way they can't push it back out very easily.
I've become a bit of a pro at getting meds into kids over the last couple of years, we've tried all sorts of ways (with a number of people helping) and that is by far the best way. |

We FF, and just before the feed, we mix a bit of the made up formula into the seringe with the rinitidine, then squirt it into the teet (off the bottle). He guzzles the lot before even realises hes had it. even if you bf you could do it that way to perhaps- minus mixing the milk. Just buy a teet.
We say to Locks- 'time for minty milk' he knows the drill now. -------------

I might try that. . . . . though I do recall trying something similar with gaviscon (after BF) and it didn't work, but that was at the end of the feed.

yea we forced it into mack for a while but then he got used to it and managed to figure out in his head that he wasnt hurting anymore. we did the syringe thing and had him lying on his back so gravity got it down before he could do anything about it. lol. our doc told us to try give it 30 mins before a feed though so the milk didnt stop the stomach absorbing it though so we couldnt even wash it down - poor thing. i guess after having to pry him jaw open and syringe feed him milk we didnt feel so mean as it was part of the first few weeks of his life. lol. hopefully he gets used to it going down the cheek and you have no more hassles :)) -------------

Yep Isla ened up on Gaviscon 6 times a day before feeds , and Ranitidine twice a day.
The Raniditne reduced the ammount of stomach acid produced, and the Gav thickens the feed so that it stays down in the stomach. |
