DS is 5.5 months old and is bottle fed - has been purely bottle fed for about 6 weeks, but had been having formula top ups since about 12 weeks.
He's become really difficult to feed. He'll have a bit then turn from side to side and really grizzle and push the bottle away. He'll then take another 10 - 15ml and the same thing will repeat over and over again. It's become a really unpleasant task. He has reflux but is on meds for that. However, he feeds fine sometimes, esp. middle of the night. He also feeds well when lying flat on the ground (which I know is a big no-no). I don't think it is the formula, as he has been on it for ages. It could be wind, but we burp him frequently. He's on more reflux meds that he was, so it shouldn't be that? And if it was that then surely it would happen at all feeds? It's doing my head in this whole feeding lark. Any ideas or help would me most appreciated. |

How's his health in general? Has it been a rapid change in feeding or gradual? Is it fast/slow flow teat? Have you changed it recently?

His health in general seems fine.
He went off his bottle about 8 days before Christmas and was an absolute nightmare to feed and we went to four different doctors who couldn't really give us any answers other that to say his throat was a bit red. Came right again but is getting more and more difficult... He's on a number 2 avent teat, haven't changed it for a wee while (he was one number 1's for ages!!) |

Firstly, I would move him up a teat just to rule that out (that's what Ava does when she starts getting frustrated or sucking in too much air from the slower teat). If thats the case, that would explain the middle of the night feeding going well, as they're generally more tired and feed a bit slower then.
Otherwise, I would get him checked out again. Sometimes if the throat was a bit red he could have had a general infection which can flair up again or go to his ears etc. |

Sorry, more questions ... Have you started solids recently? Sometimes that can play around with reflux.

We ran into the same problem and in the end it was the formula. She had been on it since about 3 weeks and then changed it cos we were having lots of trouble. The new formula worked for one day and then the same thing. Eventually we were listened to and told that there could be more wrong than just reflux (it was taking over 1 1/2hrs to feed her) and she was put onto Neocate. Her body just couldn't tolerate the milk proteins in the normal formula. The problem got worse when she started drinking bigger volumes. Sorry hopefully this makes sense. Thanks guys. It's been driving me nuts. We've had about six doctors visits over the past four weeks for this and each time I'm basically told that because he's having wet nappies it's okay.
Tried switching to the number 3 teat but he almost drowned so back to number 2. He has been on solids about two to three weeks, but it started before that. And I'm not sure about teeth... The thing that gets me is he feeds so well in the middle of the night... |

| Give him a bit of a go on the #3 teats though Bec, it usually takes a few feeds for them to adjust their suckle. So give it a day I reckon on #3 teats before switching back. |

I would give the teat another go ... he wont be used to it and it can shock them a bit when all of a sudden they dont have to work so hard for it.
I found Jake refused to feed when my supply settled which is kind of the same thing.. the flow slowed down so he had to work harder for it. As someone said before, solids can muck about the reflux.. and just as note (sorry if you already know this) but the meds dont stop the relux (ie the milk/food still comes up) they neutralise the acid so it stops the burn. So if foods are up upsetting the reflux then it could be putting him off the drinking (could also explain the red throat if its a bit acidic). Other than that, I did see a mum feeding her bubs upright with a bottle. She was standing with baby facing out and had the bottle pointing down so bubs head was back to drink. She said it was the only way baby would drink (severe reflux and also on neocate). GL hun, nothing worse than baby not feeding -------------

| Or another option is to buy the variable flow #3 teats, so you can change the flow 3 levels. That's what Ava's got and they're great. |

Bec - my DD is pretty much like that all the time - it started after I had to give her formula top ups (failure to thrive constant wheezer). Docs changed us to Neocate and she certainly drinks better but ONLY if she is lying on the floor and can feed herself. If she wakes in the night - then she too will drink HEAPS compared with during the day! Now she mainly just prefers solids. -------------

Thanks for all the advice guys. Will keep perservering with the teats. He won't feed sitting up straight, infact the only way he really seems comfortable is lying flat?!
Do you hvae to ask the doctors to try neocate or can you buy it? I'd be keen to give it a go but am loathe to go back to the docs as they just tell me he's fine and as long as he's wetting nappies all is good... |
