Hey all

Don't know if anyone can help me but my cat is starting to drive me nuts! In the past 3 weeks she has started bringing home lots and lots of "presents" Mostly baby birds she doesn't seem to kill them but brings them in, meows, plays with them. She has worn a collar with a bell on it since she was born because I didn't want this sort of thing happening but I'm guessing even with the bell she is just too quick. Any ideas to why she is doing this and how we can stop it? At the moment whenever she brings something in we growl, and DP gets rid of whatever it is! Any ideas much appreciated!

TIA

I was told animals act funny when you are pg & really to drop, my cats were the same.

When DS1 was 3 weeks old we looked after IL's farm & the cows would follow me around when I was near the paddocks, was told it was cause I was BF & they could smell/ sense it.

Good luck Bex maybe it is nearly time for baby to arrive

Sounds like she is bringing you food and presents for when baby is born... she'll probably stop as soon as baby arrives! It's not fun though... maybe switch to a jinglier bell?!?

I've read they do it to teach us about catching our own food haha but I've noticed my cats have started doing it to, often get about 3 a day (soon there'll be no birds left I swear!!) I rang the local vet who said it is probably because all the baby birds were born round spring and they're just learning to fly etc so they are easy target for the cats... Don't know if that helps you much, maybe you could try keeping your cat inside?

There's not much you can do unfortunately, my cat is the same, he is a crazy hunter and catches birds, mice and lizards. I hate it when he catches baby mice because they are so cute!
Maybe try more than one bell?

Thanks all, Seems there just isn't much I can do I guess but "kinda" good to hear its not just mine. Couldn't keep her inside unfortunately she would just go nuts plus don't want to deal with a kitty litter tray with a baby not far away!!

My cat brought me a present today. It was a baby mouse and she played with it for over an hour. What a meany she is! I didn't know she had a mouse in her mouth until she started making that urgent meowing that cats do and looked at her and worked out why. Boy did she get pissed off when our boy cat took an interest in the mouse, she was growling at him hardcore and giving him the evils! LOL! This is the first time she has ever brought a 'present' inside and I've had her for over 2 yrs. She used to have a bell too, but she is very good at making bells disappear or else making both the bell and collar disappear.

I know how you feel! One of our cats bought a present in every morning last week! They were gheckos and one day was a carebear on a keyring, no idea where she found that, it's not ours!

She doesn't kill the gheckos either, just plays with them, it's so mean as they are within an inch of their life! Lucky this week she seems to have stopped! Hope your little one does too as I know how frustrating it is

You're suppose to thank them when they bring you something. When they bring it in alive it's suppose to be for you to finish it off.

Non of that helps you though, one of mine brings in birds (alive) all the time. I normally catch them and let them free, is a pain though. I dunno how he catches them cos he is the noisiest most uncoordinated cat I have ever known.

Unfortunately other than locking her in there's not much you can do. At one house we lived at my cats would constantly bring dead rats inside and leave them lying around and sometimes we wouldn't find them straight away as they'd hide them under the couch etc. Not cutey cutey.

Maybe a squirt bottle would work if you got to her fast enough? A bit mean but if she doesn't like it she can stop!

Failing that you could put her in tiny jangly cat reigns, like for reindeer...
