Hi Ladies,
Do I need to get singlets etc... for a new born due at the start of feb or will AIO's be OK? How do you tell if a baby is hot or cold? We are in Auckland and in a VERY muggy area. Thanks a lot |

Not an expert but as far as I can tell every baby's a bit different. A friend said to me 'I've got one child in a winter coat in mid-summer, and another who melts if he's in one layer'.
Only thing that really gets me tops which don't button in crotch. They're a pain in the armpits! (his, not mine  )
Oh, and how you tell if they're hot is by putting a couple of fingers down their back. Baby should feel nice and warm but not hot. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

| Yes you'll need to get singlets - good 100% cotton ones. you can get either the solid ones, or the ones with the holes in the weave. Baby will need to wear whatever you are comfortable in + 1 layer - so if your comfy in a Tshirt, bubs is in a Tshirt and singlet. If you'd rather be naked, bubs is wearing just a singlet. |

I would definitely get some singlets, we use ones that button under the crotch and they are great, they are from baby factory. Isabella is wearing one to bed tonight and swaddled cos its so hot!
The ones with holes in them are great too as they breathe. So, Id put her in one of those, and then another layer, the rule is one more layer than what you are wearing But if its really hot then I know a lot of the Jan mums dressed bubs in just a nappy and then swaddled in muslin.------------- |

We had a Feb baby in Auckland this year and she lived in onsies and a cardi for the afternoon/evening. Oh and socks too and a swaddling wrap of some sort. We had a really warm summer last year in Auckland. You can check their temp by putting a couple of fingers on the back of babies neck and you can generally tell how hot they are (sounds weird but it works).

I agree with everyone too. Also in Winter you may find bubs has a normal vest singlet plus (cotton or wool) a one that does up in the Crotch then clothes on top.
As for telling how hot they are, our child health nurse said to feel their tummy or back (tummy is best though). Cos behind their neck is where they sweat and their head and feet is where they loose their heat so not a good indication. ------------- Our Angel July 08  Gone but not forgotten

dont forget that a newborn cant regulate their temperature. and their hands and feet will feel cold but that doesnt mean they are cold. Definitely newborns should be dressed in more than just a nappy. ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

DS was a mid Jan baby, which coincided with a stupidly hot summer. He spent his first few months wearing not much more than singlets and nappies. He was wrapped in muslins, but we also had a couple of flannelette ones for cooler nights. Love the onesies that button under the crotch - they are great for layering as well if it does cool down.
Don't forget that it can get quite cold going into April when your baby will likely still be in 0-3 month clothes. Try and stick to breathable fabrics. Cotton is good, but the best onesies I have found are the bamboo ones at the Baby Factory. they are a bit more expensive, but they are super soft and don't lose their shape like cotton ones. Merino is also lovely. You can get nice thin merino cardigans at Baby City. |

Thats a good point Bizzy! I read that somewhere a while ago. My DH was always worried the kids were cold cos their hands or feet were cold, so I told him about that. ------------- |
