Is semi-permanent hair dye better than permanent hair dye as far as chemicals that can upset your pregnancy go??

I've decided I'm not going to use a permanent hair dye at least until the second trimester, but looking in the mirror at all my grey hairs showing through is making me desperate to find something!!

I think semi-permanent is better or you could try organic hair colour. I use it all the time (PG or not PG). If you do your hair yourself, you can buy it from health stores like Harvey's. More and more hair salons are offering it, too (like Hue, Nada and Stephen Marr here in Aucks, so check who does it in Welly). It lasts heaps longer, leaves my hair all shiny, and doesn't smell fumes or make you head itch when it's being applied. I find the colour quality is just the same as normal dye, too. Just make sure it's "organic" and definitely not henna. That stuff is nasty!

If you are going to use a semi permanent, just make sure there is plenty of air flow to help reduce concentration of fumes.

Good luck with your pregnancy

I have been dying my hair throughout pregnancy with permanents. Both my MW and Hairdresser said that as long as there is airflow, it is fine. The chemicals are nowhere near as harsh as they were 10yrs ago so don't cause a problem.

Thanks guys. Having miscarried before, I'm being really careful this time with anything that there are questions/concerns about.

I had a hair cut today which has made the grays less obvious for now!

hey shellgirl - congrats on your pregnancy - wishing you sticky babe vibes!!

Im allergic to permanent hair colour so always use wella soft colour - not nearly as nasty sa anything else i have used - and not so smelly but open the windows wide for sure. They even have blonde and a huge range of browns, its only about $11 form the supermarket
