When should it be stopped ideally?

Ashley is swaddled, both arms down, like she is in a straight jacket. This is what always worked best for her.

I was talking to my plunket nurse about the cot transition etc and she said I should do it all at once, cold turkey...no more swaddle, no more sleeping music and into the cot. She says that then Ashley will learn how to soothe herself to sleep and be better able to sleep anywhere.

I'm not sure as Elle was swaddled and had sleep music until about 8 months or so and it was good as I could take those things most places with us.

Plunket schmunket - 'nuff said.

Sorry, that wasn't very helpful was it? Um, we're still swaddling DS and although he always gets his arm free, the free arm eventually wakes him up and he settles when I re-wrap him.

I think it's a bit cruel to go cold turkey with everything.... but then, I'm just a big softy.

I agree with MrsH - Plunket told me to get rid of the swaddle - but after a week of trying I have decided to keep going with the swaddle - DS is 6 months.

maybe get her settled in the cot and then remove the other things??

We have finally got rid of the wrap in the last week as Corban was waking himself (and me) up multiple times a night when he got unwrapped, and I was having to get up to him to rewrap him otherwise he wouldn't go back to sleep.

Another reason we did it was it was becoming a bit of a safety issue as he would manage to roll on to his tummy and with his hands wrapped couldn't push himself up or turn back over.

We went cold turkey last Tuesday, it took until Friday before he had two good day sleep unwrapped and last night was the first night he sleep through - ever - YAY!!!

I dont think you should have no music or anything, I dont see why they would say not to use music, we always have. Silly plunket!

I think with ashley being how she is, id just take it one step at a time. Go into the cot cold turkey, but keep her wrapped as she sleeps well like that, and still use her music. Then as the weather starts getting hottler start putting her in the cot in just her GoGo bag and no swaddle, and see how you go?

ETA- But cos she is growing out of her bassinett fast, i think the cot is the first thing you need to tackle, hence why I say go cold turkey with just the cot, dont worry about the sawddling thing at all yet.

Finley was wrapped straight jacket style until about 8 maybe even 9 months, don't worry, when the day came I thought he doesn't look comfortable I put both arms out gave him a cuddly and he LOVES it and still sleeps just as well.

We tried it a couple of times earlier but he just got upset, they will let you know when they are ready, I worried about it but thought well its unlikely i'm going to need to wrap a 10 year old so it will stop.

As for music, he still has a little music machine we turn on, it runs for 10 mins, if he wakes in the night he doesn't need it, or anything, I think its just a signal that its bedtime

Plunket have a tick box list of things you should and shouldn't do and they don't always fit in my opinion, go with what works for her.

Our wee girl is 16 months old and for her day sleep I still wrap her. It helps to calm her down and we still have music playing for night and day sleeptimes. Do what you think is right not what other people say. You will know whats best for your wee one. Trust your instincts.

10 months and still wrapping here! One arm has been out for the last couple of months I think. We still use music to go to sleep as well. That is part of our bedtime routine.

Have you thought about using a pekemoe as a transition tool?

I have just stopped swaddling Ty in the last week. He started to unwrap himself and get out of his safety sleep but without being wrapped would wake quite often throughout the night. So I now have him in a Peke Moe... probably one of the best things I have ever bought! Since he has been in it he has been sleeping 12hrs straight... YAY!!

He had also started to roll over in his Safe-T-Sleep, so now I don't bother with it and he just sleeps on his tummy

I don't think cold turkey is the way to go... wouldn't you want the transition to the cot to be as comfortable as possible rather than smack bang change everything on her at once? If she's happy being swaddled then there's no need to stop all of a sudden Bugger Plunket!

DS was swaddled for about 5 months. We could have gone longer but it was February and so hot for the little guy that we just went cold turkey.

It took him a couple of nights to get used to his arms out - and we needed to resettle him, but ultimately it was fairly painless.

How do you feel about it? Mothers instinct is usually stronger than Plunket advice.

Re. transition to cot, we put DS into his cot for daynaps... he was so tiny in that big bed... and that took a couple of gos. He didn't like it at first but perseverance won. Just remember that you are in charge and doing it for good reason.

I only just stopped swaddling Cooper at 8 months and that was only because we went to Australia and it was way to hot for him to be wrapped.
He now sleep in a grobag and sleeps just as good.

Thanks ladies. Have decided to follow her lead. She loves her swaddle so am going with that...unless it gets too hot (which is happening rapidly!). I'm happy to report she is happily in her cot. She must've just had an off day the other day as she transitioned to it perfectly today with not one single tear . All her naps have been perfect today.

We are still wrapping here and will continue to do so until Jackson is ready to go without it. When its hot he is in a singlet and muslin wrap only, no top sheet or blanket.

I've found plunket really helpful, until last night made me feel like I'm completely off track looking after DS.
DS is 4mths and we still swaddle. His bedtime routine has just gone pearshaped and I was about to start my own thread.
Swaddling was one of the things the plunket nerse was very very against. We've been trying one arm out during day sleeps for about a week, and half the time I end up sitting next to the cot holding the free arm against his chest to calm him until he falls asleep - somehow I don't think that's better than a full swaddle.

isaacsmum - poor you - they said the same to me a few weeks ago - some of them are pretty opinionated - some of my friends swaddled till 9 -10 months and their babies are fine. My DS is just like yours and struggles to sleep without being swaddled. Go with your gut, a mothers instinct cant be wrong

I rang Plunket Line the other days to ask when we should stop swaddling. I was told to do it when Jack started rolling as he might not be able to get back over onto his back if he's wrapped. He won't usually have a decent sleep if he's not wrapped and loves to suck the muslin so we're just going with what he wants to do for now.

While its a very individual thing, I thought it was common to stop around six months. That's when they stop swaddling babies at my friend's daycare!

Need a new plan. Even just using muslins Ashley is getting prickly heat rash on her arms...EVEN when her legs are cold! She won't sleep with a loose swaddle, or with no swaddle but is too hot (arms) with her usual swaddle....any suggestions??

Heat rash as goes away when she is up and about. At night she has a summer go-go bag. She kicks normal sheets/blankets off.''

She has been getting the swaddle loose anyway so her sleep has turned to poop. Down to all 40min naps + multiple night wakings. A big change from 2 hour naps and 11 hour nights.

We get over night temps of about 20 - 25 degrees here so heat is a big issue and bigger during the day of up to 35 degrees. I am still swaddling Jackson both day and night otherwise he wont sleep long enough and takes ages to get to sleep.

For both during the day and over night he is in a singlet and nappy and swaddled. I dont use another sheets or blankets. If either DH or I wake during the night to put the blanket on us we get up and put one on Jackson too.
Perhaps try without the go-go bag or other blankets and see how you go.

Ive also started leaving Jacksons feet unwrapped (I just pull the wrap up through his legs instead of over his feet) as babies equalise their body heat through their head and feet, and that has also helped.

Oh I forgot to say, do you have a fan you can put in her room? We have both ceiling fan and one on a stand and when its super hot we have both going on Jackson.

heat rash doesnt normally go away that quickly. toby used to get it badly. maybe the muslin is irritating her arms. could you try one of those pumpkin patch stretchy ones...?

We have to use 2 muslins to get her arms to stay down....hard to explain. The heat rash fades after an hour or so of cool air but doesn't totally disappear. Haven't had any issues until now and haven't changed wraps or washing powder so assume it is the heat. Might have got the rash in the car though rather than in bed...

heat rash is mainly on chest and back and wont fade after a couple of hours. maybe its related to the moths - they might be laying eggs in her wraps?! or bedding?

Don't think so. She has had this on and off when she has been hot in the past...tiny red dots. On top of her front & back, waistline of nappy and now arms as it is her arms that are tightly wrapped against her body. It lasts for a couple of days (assuming she doesnt' get hot again) then goes.

The dots are pin prick size and are not at all raised. She has had them from time to time, generally after getting hot from a crying lag or similar.

Jackson also gets the heat rash so while he is awake feeding and playing I cool him down using a wet face cloth and wipe it over his body every couple of minutes which he likes.

Do you bath every day/night? Ive noticed that since we've been bathing Jackson every night before bed as his evening routine there havent been as many spots.
