Hi everyone, I was just wanting some advice about starting day care. DS is 6.5 months old, I'll have to go back to work in Jan, so he'll be 8months then. I'm worried because we don't really have any routine, he's a very very active little guy - crawling everywhere - and sleep has never been his strong suit. The routine that everyone said would evolve just hasnt, and I'm not sure what this will mean regarding day care..?? Everyday is different, depending on what time he gets up in the morning. Roughly he goes about 2.5-3hours up, but this varies. depending on how he is. Day sleeping is proving very hard to get at the moment, as since he started crawling he won't go down. I used to win the battle mostly by just keepng on going in and rewrapping and tucking him in, but now, even if he's yawning and almost asleep before I put him down, as soon as he hits the mattress he - literally - pings up onto all fours and stats laughing and crawling all over the cot.
How do day care cope with so many different routines.... are they able to just go with the flow with some babies.. or will we be fired after one day???!!! |

The first thing you need to do is go to the daycare you have chosen, and sit in for a few hours. Ask them how they would deal with it, and watch how they cope with the different ages and stages.

Daycare also seems to get babies into a routine .. but they are hardly going to fire you .. they wouldnt make any money that way  ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! A good daycare should be able to go with the flow. My standard advice is to try to have baby in a good routine if possible before starting, but we didn't have JJ in a routine when he started (at about the same age as your DS).
The only thing I'd add is that 2.5-3 hours up seems like a long time to me for a 6.5 month old - so maybe you're having sleep battles with him cos he's overtired (and hitting his 'second wind')? Some babies can go that long, it's true, but it might be something to consider. Yawning is a late tired sign, he might be pulling his ears or rubbing his eyes or getting twitchy a bit sooner. Hi Essjay - I went to back when DD was 5 months and she had no routine either and wasn't a big sleeper - like your DS, she can easily stay up for 2-3 hours and show no signs of tiredness. I ended up going for homebased care and found a carer who had another similar child.
