Jackson has finally started allowing us to brush his teeth, for maybe a minute max at a time. This is great, because he used to be so orally averted we couldn't get a toothbrush within 20cm of his mouth.

I have heard some horror stories about the teeth of kids with oral aversions, so I am grateful he's seeing it as a novelty at the moment.

Should I be using toothpaste? Is there baby toothpaste even? I just use water on the brush at the moment but is that enough?

Thanks!

I'd use a pea sized blob of toothpaste and see how he goes. He 'might' completely surprise you and like the peppermint taste

I used baby toothpaste to start with (colgate does a milk teeth one in a pale tube). E LOVES the taste, and brings me her toothbrush to put toothpaste on, or brushes her tongue with her finger if she can't reach it. Once she got used to that one, we moved onto a kids toothpaste (maximum flouride) because the water here isn't flouridated.

There are a couple of different brands of the "milk teeth" toothpase but my Plunket nurse said to me on Wednesday that you can just use your normal toothpaste if you want to. I tried some of the stuff we have for DS and the peppermint isn't as strong as the adult stuff I don't think.

eden is 20 months and we dont use toothpaste. never did with the boys either and they all have good teeth. Its not necessary at that age.

i am surprised plunket said to use adult toothpaste. there is a heck of a lot less of the active ingredient in the milk teeth toothpaste than adult paste. Some of that other toothpaste tho isnt - like the junior jaws for the older kids - it has the same amount of active ingredient as adult stuff!

I worked as a dental assistant for 6 years and Im surprised the plunket nurse said that too....
You don't have to use tooth paste at this age, but if you did I would recommend the milk teeth one , at Jackson's age, getting them into the habit of brushing is really more important than what you put on the brush .
And if they have trouble opening wide so you can brush at the back , tell them to "roar like a lion " and get in there , (same for when they are brushing themselves ) and when they brush the front to "smile like a monkey "

Thanks guys!

I got some milk teeth toothpaste today, but am reluctant to use anything in case I put him off. It's good to know that it's not that important just yet. I think I will give him a bit more time to get used to us brushing them and then I'll add in the paste.

Kelly, I smiled when you said monkey and lion. Jackson has just learned "raaaah" (said in a loud whisper) for lion and "who who who" for monkey!

I had trouble getting aidan use to toothpaste and a tooth brush, I think he remembers the tubes etc he had
what I did was took him to the supermarket and let him pik the tooth brush and tooth paste, (both ended up being the wiggles lol)
I then put a little on his finger to taste and get use to the flavor etc
then gave him his tooth brush (nothing on it) so he got use to it
then one day put the two together, and he has been good with them both together since

another big thing was too brush your teeth at the same time as they were 'playing with the brush' lets them know you aren't scared of the brush or toothpaste so its ok

Jake loves the taste of the baby toothpaste - we have to put it out of reach cos we've caught him eating it a few times!! He always asks for more paste on his brush, so it must taste good (hes pretty fussy!).

Thats interesting. We were told to use the adult stuff by the dental nurse and plunket. Apparently there isnt enough flouride in the baby one. Maybe that is because our water isnt flouridated?

Yeah, I've been told to use just a tiny smear of adult toothpaste too, due to lack of enough flouride in baby toothpaste. Good point about whether your water is flouridated - maybe you don't have to worry if you're giving tapwater that is flouridated?
