The boys have both just been to the doctor following up from their ear infections over winter. Tom has only ever had the one (AUgust) but James had 2 or 3 and I think this is 6-7 weeks after the last infection.

The doctor checked them and to look at they looked good but the tympanometry (sp?) showed glue ear in both of James' and in one of Tom's.

She is taking a wait and see attitude at the moment which is good but I would like to know what other people have experienced. When did you need to get referred? when did they need grommets? what was their behaviour like?

Both my boys have been through this. If you have health insurance ask for a referral to an ENT and get grommets.

I noticed a huge difference after my boys got their grommets in.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Gia has glue-ear in both ears and is on the waiting list to get grommets (don't have health insurance unfortunately).  She has really bad hearing, so keep an eye on your boys and if you think they aren't hearing well, get them checked again.  I'm glad Gia only got this problem this year... when she'd already learnt to speak well.  Otherwise I'm sure it would've affected her speech.

We noticed a big difference in Oli once he had the grommets put in. His language blossomed overnight, and he seemed to become more active and curious...and less clingy (although we seem to have regressed at the moment to a clingy grumpy toddler).

Got Bella referred after 5 back-to-back ear infections. She got grommets at 11 months (health insurance). Such a simple operation, but it makes the world of difference. Bella has not had ONE infection since the grommets and I've noticed her colds are not as bad as they used to be. Hers are still in place, so there haven't been any problems in over a year

Spencer had one flat tympanogram (sp?), our doc took wait and see approach as well and his next two were totally normal, so don't panic just yet.

I'm not I figure Tom has only had one ear infection (that I am aware of) and James, 2-3. Rolling into summer should hopefully help. I have no concerns over Tom's speech and hearing. He is speaking better than most of his three year old playmates and copies words off me with perfect pronunciation so he is hearing ok. James is too young to tell...but I swear he tried to say "cuddly" today when I pointed to his cuddly and said it myslef.....it sounded just like that ad on TV "cuggely"

Have you tryed giving them vitemin a, theres a good product for babies and young children made by karicar called vit c, you get it from the pharmacy. My son is 21 months and has had repetitive ear infections (about 8 since birth) and my MIL said my Hubby was the same. He had everything ear infections and clue ear as a child and they recommended grommets my MIL didn't realy want him to have to have grommets so looked into other things that can possibly fix it and vitemin A was what she found. She loaded him up on vitemin A and continued giving it to him for atleast a year it cleared up everything and hes never had an ear infection since. It seems to be working for our son too as hes been taking karicare vit c for about 3 months now and hasn't had them flare up again at all since. Its worth a try right?
