Hi, This post may just turn into a rant, but oh well. I started back at work 5 weeks ago and I was dreading it, thinking I would hate it, but I love it, I work 4 days, DS goes to daycare gets dropped off by DH at 9 and I pick him up at 4. DS is starting to become more social and independent from me and i'm earning so all is good. Also cos i'm brittish and have no family here, Dh and I don't have any baby free time there is just nobody to hand him to so for me having some me time at work is really good and DH and I meet for baby free lunch sometime. BUT - he is just so sick, he has been sick since we started and its horrid, colds, tummy bugs, ear infections, the latest is an ear and throat infection meaning he has no voice, he can't even cry properly Did everyone else find this, does it get better? I am so happy with his daycare but this level of sickness is a bit overwhelming and its got me thinking about in home care which I don't love the idea of but if its better for his health??? -------------

Try giving him the Healtheries Vit C tabs the ones with the little lion on the front. Will help boost his immunity to bugs.

Yep it's an unfortunate side effect! It does get a bit better once their immune system has adjusted a bit, doesn't stop entirely though. I'm told the payback for it is that they get less sick when they start school than other kids cos they've already been exposed to all the bugs. So I guess it has to happen sooner or later! -------------

Yip just the way it is with daycare, sorry. It takes a few months to get better, and it really doesn't help when other parents drop their sick kids off ready to infect others. Just got to deal with it unfortunately, hopefully your DH has some sick leave accrued so it is not all down to you to use yours when in a new job. |

Yeah I think the older they are, the quicker they get sick because they're so into everything, and socialising so much more with the other kids.
DS started (only part time) at 5 months and has had a few colds (he and Ava both have one at the moment as they're both at DC) and a few ear infections (which isn't a DC thing as its not a virus so can't be passed around) but other than that pretty good. It will get better as he settles in but unfortunately I think they just pick up everything and then get the good immunity from it. |

I'm an ECE teacher and I'd say about half of new kids pick up everything for about 2-3 months..it really sucks:( E didnt but he had been to many coffee groups and bug sharing episodes before that lol.....
anyway preschool has to follow sickness guidelines and it sucks but no way of preventing it really:( I dread what would have happened if i had to work cause my DH doesnt get sick leave paid:( ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

Yep, J has been sick since starting. Luckily only needed a couple of days off. ALL the kids have snotty noses ALL the time. Gross, but just a side effect I guess.
As for the lost voice, must be a bug going around because Jackson barely has a voice at the moment and one of the bubs in our coffee group is the same. PS - when are we catching up Fi? I have practically forgotten what you look like! |

Also, Jackson is a different baby since starting care. He loves going there (cries to be let out of DH's arms into those of his favourite carer), tries lots of different foods and is nowhere near as clingy.
I think if Finley is enjoying it and doing well, and the sickness isn't enough to mean you have to take heaps of time off, then I am sure he will be fine. |

As others have said, it does get better. We went through a stupid amount of tummy bugs etc when Miss M started but it did ease off.

Yep, it's definitely day care. DS started when he was one. It was august, & for teh rest of the winter he was sick pretty much all teh time. I got so sick of his snotty nose. But then this winter he has been HEAPS better, & has only had a mild cold twice. I definitely think they get more immune. Unfortunately the early days suck, but just hang in tehre, it gets better.
I also agree that they have to build up immunity sometime & if they don't do it at day care they'll do it when they hit school. I think it's better when they're a bit younger. I suspect DS has the chicken pox-noticed blisters on his back & tummy tonight...gues where that came from??? ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I feel your pain! We're also new here so no toddler-free time for us.

Jake started at 10months and was sick for 4.5 months til a pead at hospital told us to take him out for at least a month. He'd been in hospital 3x at that point, the final straw was a tummy bug where he lost 15% of his body weight! Before that he'd had pneumonia twice, bronchiolitis twice, 2 other chest infections, 3 ear infection, slapped check virus and constant coughs and colds!
Long story short - we moved him to a different centre after a 6 week break and he hasn't had a temp or been back in hospital since .... just a couple of colds and chickpox. The second winter is definitely alot easier. And I agree, it will happen when they start kindy or school if not at dc. Hang in there!! ------------- DS (5yrs) and DD (3yrs) |

I have found that with Daycare aswell, we have had conjuntivits twice, colds, tummy bugs and one ear infection.
But Arianne loves daycare, we are putting her in full time soon (she is in 2 days a week). She is coming home so happy and full of energy its great to see her have so much fun. Thanks, he's back there again today I picked him up early to make sure he wasn't too tired and he was so happy playing with his mates, and having fun it was so lovely to see, he used to be pretty shy.

| I have been told there are some Weleda homeopathic drops you can put into their water to strengthen their immune systems, they are meant to be great but I ahvent tried them myself so cant say for sure! |

Happens to everyone i think Fi! I have used up all my sick leave on taking days off when C has been ill. I was poorly myself at the end of last week and had to take annual leave as i can't afford unpaid.
C hasn't been sick now though for a long time (and just cos i typed that, it is not an open invitation to Fate to come and strike us down with more lurgies!) ------------- |

The daycare also has something to do with it - some seem to just have more bugs! Jakes one is great he's gotten 2 colds this year thats it. He got an intestinal bug but that was from the farm not DC. A friend has her little guy in another daycare in town though and the kids there are always sick, snotty noses, coughs, etc  gross!!-------------
