DS is over 11 wks now and has discovered he's got hands which is very exciting for him, thing is I'm now having difficulty figuring out his feeding cues. Hands in mouth don't seem to mean 'feed me' any more.
How often should a 3mth old feed during the day? How can I tell the difference between hunger, and 'wow, i've got a hand'?

If he looks happy with his hand, that's what he wants. If he gives you "the look" while sucking on his hand, he'll be hungry. Or if he's like my girl, when you pick him up he'll make a special noise (not a real cry) that means "give me a drink Mum!"

I got Harry into a tighter routine around that time for the same reason - so I was feeding him every 3-4 hours.
Also, if he cries/grizzles and makes a "neh, neh" sound that is a hungry cry (well, according to dunstan language anyway - was spot on for us).

At that age and still now I feed when she grizzles - essentially demand feeding. I don't take sucking on hands or anything really as a feeding cue, like Flutterby, I have learnt the sound she makes when shes hungry. Sometimes we go 1 hr between feeds, occasionally 4 hours (she usually feeds for 5 mins or so). Personally, I have found it much easier and less stressful to let baby lead. So at 6.5mths she feeds roughly 6-7 times per day sometimes more if shes teething and not feeling the best and extra at night if she wakes.
In answer to your question 'how often should he be feeding', I guess it depends whether you want to continue demand feeding or schedule his feeds. Really depends on what works for you and your little man
Edited to clarify myself Hopefully it makes some sense!

babies will start "rooting" around when they start to get hungry, turning their heads looking for it, making funny little shapes with mouths, very animalistic really... i found it helpful for me to feed as soon as bub woke up... then once they had been up for an hour max put them back to bed. they are all different and some just want more or less, but if you try to feed them and they arent hungry they wont take it.
