Hi, just wanted to introduce myself - my husband and I have just moved to akld AND found out that i am pregnant (6wks).

Was just wondering if any of you out there have found the early pregnancy thing confusing? I saw the GP yesterday, who was pretty useless and gave me no information at all (i think she was surprised by a 'planned' pregnancy in the area we are living in lol).

Anyway, I managed to get out of the doctor that we would need to find a midwife, (doc said to ask family/friends who they used - but we don't know anyone in akld!) but no phone numbers or pamphlets....then went off the get blood tests done and the blood lady had to stick the needle in 3 times to get a vein. By the time i got home I just burst into tears at the seeming incompetence of the system.

Then I had to ring around midwives - they weren't particularly interested to hear from me until i reach 12 wks, so apart from the internet, I have absolutely no information about pregnancy and am feeling pretty lost about it all.

Sorry, I'm not normally a negative person - but just felt I had to tell someone. I would be interested to hear from anybody in the same boat - and to find out how they dealt with everything.

First of all WELCOME to ohbaby

im so sorry you had such a horrid start to the medical system.
I would start ringing midwives for sure as there is quite a shortage in some places (i know down here in chch if you wait til 12wks you might not get one). Sorry i cant recommend anyone up here but im sure others in auckland can.

Everyone on here is really lovely and helpful. Goodluck with the rest of your pregnancy - i would recommend joining the due in (month you're due) thread.

Wow, that's a bit of a crap first impression of Auckland!

Well I'd suggest changing doctors for starters, as I'm reasonably sure they're supposed to tell you exactly what happens next and give you a rather large amount of pamphlets to read through. You should also have been given a prescription for folic acid if you're not already taking it.

Definately don't wait to call a midwife, they do book up quite fast. I think there's a shortage in most of the big cities. Your doctor should be able to give you at least one number to call, and Mama Maternity will send out a list of all registered midwives in your area and their numbers. Mama Maternity's number is 815 8108

Welcome to OhBaby!

Like the other ladies said I would definately not go back to that GP, if you are in west auckland I can give you the details of mine as she is lovely.
I have heard alot of midwives don't want to see you till at least 10 weeks although mine was happy to meet me at 6 weeks for just a chat to see if I liked her.
It does seem like everywhere you go people do things differently and to tell you the truth even after being given lots of info I still feel a tad lost, but I think thats completely normal at this stage.

welcome to OhBaby Sarah. and congratulations on your pregnancy.

what part of Auckland are you in. if we know that we might be able to recommend doctors and or MW's

i think you must have seen a pretty crap doctor he/she should have given you a list of midwifes and a folic acid prescripttion at least.

I agree with everyone else, it is best to get onto finding a MW now, i first saw my midwife at 6 and a half weeks.

good luck.

Hi, thanks for the support and advice.

We are currently living in Takanini/Papakura, its a bit different to Christchurch! But is handy to both our works.

Yeah if I had known how useless GP was, I wd have requested someone else. If anyone knows of a good GP in this area...let me know! Likewise for midwives.

Ive been taking folic acid for a while now, is there anything else I should be doing?

there is a whole list of foods you aren't supposed to eat, like deli meat and soft cheeses like brie.

here is a bit from on the pregnancy bit of this site

"Remember to avoid the following as they contain bacteria that can be harmful to your baby:
- Shellfish (Fresh fish is okay)
- Liver
- Pate
- Unpasteurised milk and soft cheeses such as brie and feta
- Ready, prepared salads
- Raw/undercooked meats and eggs (and food containing raw eggs)
- Reheated food (or food that has been exposed to the air for extended periods time)

Notes:
- To prevent toxoplasmosis, ensure that the kitty litter box is always clean.
- Wash (or peel) vegetables and fruit to get rid of sprayed chemicals
- Contact a dietician if you want comprehensive personal guidance.
- During pregnancy, increased levels of progesterone can relax bowel muscles causing constipation. To help eliminate this, drink fluids, eat prunes and high-fibre cereals."

also the NZ food safety authority site could be helpful http://www.nzfsa.govt.nz/consumers/low-immunity-child-pregnancy/pregnancy-food-safety/ - link

i'm not sure of doctors/MW's in your area but try giving the mama maternity a call that jelly mentioned earlier on 09 815 8108 and they will send you a list of midwifes in your area. I live in Waiuku so it is kind of near you, well in south auckland anyway

Thanks Got hold of a midwife who I am meeting on monday, so hope that goes well and answers a few questions!

Waiuku is one of the places we are thinking about buying in, but didn't know much about it apart from a drive-through last week. How do you find living in there? I was a little worried about feeling isolated, but love being able to get out to the coast

I was always completely underwhelmed by what the GP had to offer so with this pregnancy I went straight to a midwife instead. Technically 6 weeks is very early but to any of us who have ever been pregnant we're just pregnant and excited!   Join up the Due in June (?) forum and you'll get heaps of info from the others in there. There's heaps of info on the internet, and even just on this site - but remember it's different for everyone so don't panic if what you're experiencing isn't identical to other people.

Good luck with everything.

squoggs welcome to Oh Baby and congrats!

I can't help with a GP or Midwife out your way as I'm in West Auckland but just wanted to say welcome to Auckland!

Also, my GP was SO useless when I went first.. I got no info and I felt like she didn't even know what she was doing. Anyway, I changed GP after that so I know how you feel, hopefully someone on here can recommend a good one for you!

Sarah we live a bit out of waiuku on the way up the awhitu peninsula kind of on a hobby farm. yeah it is pretty isolated but we love it here. i like the quiet. DD goes to the local rural school and the bus picks her up from just outside our house. if we had the money to buy a house we would definitely buy out here. Im not too sure what living in the actual township is like tho sorry.

feel free to PM me if you want to know any more

Yah welcome!!!

Everyone in here is just fab so if you every need a whinge, moan, advise or a laugh you're at the right place!

I'm sort of new to Auckland as well and found finding a mw a bit daunting but if you're still looking for one the Yvonne Daji at the Parent Center in Glenn Innes is fantastic

Hi ... I just moved to Auckland too and am also new to pregnancy, but I had a much better experience with my doctor. I'm still on the hunt for a midwife though (looking for one in the CBD if anyone can make a recommendation that would be great).

It can make everything stressful when the Dr is unhelpful - they are meant to be putting your mind at rest!!

Hi Sarah88
I was given this website which has been really helpful - thought I would pass it onto you in case you haven;t already found it - it has details for midwives - and what to ask them (i always go blank when it comes to stuff like that!)

HI, I agree with Jelly, first thing is to change your Doctor. The Dr should have given you a 'Bounty Pack' or similar, or put you on the list to recieve one, and a prescription for Folic Acid - as this is very important to start taking once you know your pregnant. When i first found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks, i must admit i left the Drs thinking..."what now". At least you have had the bloods done which is a good start.   Now, when selecting a Lead Maternity Carer, you can either go privately through an Obstetrician/Gynao (this costs around $4000 and is paid over 4 payments at milestone weeks OR you can go through a Midwife which is completely free. For private care check out 'Auckland Obstetric Centre', 'Birthright' or 'Origins'. To go through an independant Midwife you can contact the following: 0800MUM2BE. Or here are some midwife websites: www.ksmidwifery.co.nz, www.homebirth.org.nz and www.maternity.org.nz.

Good luck with everything, take a deep breath and try not to stress out. Once you have a midwife or Obstetrician, then discuss when your first scan will be. I had mine at 10 weeks, and i think its around 11 weeks when they can start testing for downs syndrome. Some tests a free, and some cost which are optional - but provide a more thorough risk ratio. If you want to take the "extra" tests, i think one of them is done around week 11 which i did and costs $120.00.

Hi Sarah,

Congrats - and welcome to Auckland! By my calculations you must be due late may/early june? My husband and I have recently moved to Papakura and are now expecting our second in mid may :) Big huge huge hugs, what a horrible start to being in Auckland!!

So glad you've found a mw now, hope you manage to get a better doctor and they all set your mind at ease. I've just switched to Dr Grace Tong at Rosehill Christian Medical Centre (Papakura) at my friend's recommendation and she seems lovely if that's any help?

Sounds like you're doing all the right things, as long as you know where to find the info on what you should/shouldn't eat and have a mw lined up you're on the right track. I think someone said about asking for a bounty pack, they're great. Also I'd recommend (if you're keen on knowing more about the week-by-week development of your wee one) signing up for the ohbaby emails, and maybe the treasures ones too. I found them fab with Bethany - and need to get around to signing up for them again now!

Let me know if you'd like to meet up or anything, I know it can be hard to make new connections when you move so far from home. All the best for your pregnancy!! xx
