I'm 36wks and 5 days and have been having problems with my hips, grinding etc, really stiff at night and I've not been sleeping very well for quite a while, so as a result I'm more than a little sleep deprived.
Anyway i went for my second appointment with physio and i'd had a really bad night previous and was more than a little emotional. anyway the physio was worried and has booked me into see a pain management team and ob. so today i got a call from my midwife and should be seeing them next week but she said they would probably want to me to stay at auckland hospital after the birth. so i asked if i would have to give birth there too. she said yes. i've just spent the last six months working really hard towards a natural birth, we've done a hypnobirthing course and have been doing all we can to go down this route. I booked into birthcare for the birth and we did a tour yesterday and loved it, especially the water tubs. I really want a shot at birthing there. now i realise babies have their own plans and anything can happen but I'm really upset at the thought of not even having a shot at it. I'm in pain but it's still bearable and i've changed my routine today so that i've slowed down, wearing the smiley belt etc and sleeping for a few hours in the afternoon to help combat the lack of sleep. i've been spending more time in the bath and my husband has been massaging my hips. It's only a few weeks left to go. I'm just wondering how to handle this appt next week as i really do want to give birth at birthcare. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice? disco

I'm sorry you're in so much pain. I've not had this experience but I would just go in and be really honest with them. Whoever sees you only knows the side of you that you present and so it's probably important that they know how hard you've planned and how you are working to manage things. At the end of the day they will advise you based on what they feel you really need so at least if you are able to feel you've given them the whole picture it may help you to feel you have some control over the situation.

Just remember, it's your decision where to birth, not theirs - if you have your heart set on Birthcare then they can't force you to give birth elsewhere. Obviously take their advice on board, but it is ultimately your decision. ------------- Two little girls under 2!

Can't help with what to do about the appt but I'd probably start thinking positively about different birthing situations. I know its not specifically what you're posting about but in case things don't go the way you're hoping...
I ended up having a very different birth with Jake rather than the calm waterbirth I was hoping for but I'd been practising a very laidback attitude so was able to stay calm and positive. It meant easy management of the unavoidable complications because I wasn't upset or out of control at all. I would definitely encourage anybody expecting a baby to focus more on the outlook you have rather than the situation you're in. In saying tht I really do hope you can have your baby at birthcare  -------------

Hi Disco. Have you tried craniosacral therapy before? I went to see a local therapist a few months after giving birth (to treat my intense lower back pain) and wish I'd known about this option during my first pregnancy. Just in case they still recommend you birth at Auckland ...would you be able to do the same type of birth you had planned , there ? -------------

Thanks everyone for your advice,
I think i will go in with an open mind, listen to what they advise and go from there. As with any births, plans usually go out the window. Am sure I can do the same at the hospital, i just liked the the calmness of birthcare. All that matters is that baby and me are fine at the end of the day :) disco:) |

I didn't have anywhere near the pain you're having but in my first pregnancy I had sciatic nerve pain from really early on and my MW got me onto the Fish Oil tablets which did help.
Have you tried taking some of those? Obvs. check with your MW first but I'm sure she'd be ok with it. I'm sure you can still have a hypnobirth with the water baths at Auckland. I agree with kateandahalf - just be really up front with what you want and they'll be able to explain it all to you. You may feel better after having a tour of Auckland Hospital. -------------

| Hi, no one tells you pregnancy hurts so much huh? I've been having a lot of trouble too and because physio's can't really help much my midwife prescribed me some codeine to have at night when I really need it. I hate taking pills but I've taken it a couple of times just to get some sleep and relief. It's probably what the pain management team at the hospital will offer you as well. Might be worth a try. |

Birthing at Auck hospital is just as relaxing as birthing at birthcare. They too have the birthpools which I was meant to try to use for painrelief but didn't because my mw wouldn't let me in when I was only 4cm because it can slow your birth right down. At Auck hosp you also if your mw says so can get a room with a view of the ocean so thats also good. Seriously just because your at the hospital doesn't mean its all clinical its literally still just you your birth partner and mw. If someone from the Auck hosp team has to come in then there is a curtained area just past the door in the birthing suites and they knock come in to the curtained area see if everythings ok or announce that they have something then leave. Not that I've birthed at birthcare lol. If your lucky you might get your own room at Auck hosp as most people go to birthcare for their stay after so cross your fingers

Hi Disco,
Currently studying to gain certification as a Doula - and what is very important in this situation is effective communication. Everyone has the right to birth in whatever environment she chooses & I'm sure your midwife will be following your health situation very clearly. You need to express your concerns to your mw - ask her about the reasons for recommending Auckland over Birthcare, what about exploring the option of transferring from Birthcare to Auckland after the birth? Now is the time to gather as much information as possible - speak openly & honestly to those that are caring for you as this will allow you to make an informed & well-educated decision on how & where you birth. I think you're already well on the path to managing your situation by taking regular baths, having hubbie massage you, wearing your smiley belt & resting - welldone! :) |

Well had my appt today and it went well. We were given the drug options to manage pain and recommended an epidural or an elective c section!
Anyways we're going to go ahead with birthcare for the moment, see how the next few weeks go and just take it as it comes and if need be we'll transfer to the hospital if needed during labour. I don't feel the pain is bad enough to warrant drugs just yet. I've only a few weeks to go and would really like to see if I can manage with what we've been doing so far. My braxton hicks have been stepping up a notch so am wondering how long I have left! thanks mybeautiful3 I guess i just want the chance of trying a natural birth, am open to it leading to other things but be nice to at least give it a go. disco:) |

Disco - good on you for being so open-minded with this situation. Going into your birth being relaxed & to just let nature follow its course (as your body intended) - is so definately going to count in your favour!
I applaud you for seeing what other "options" are available & keeping such an open-mind....but you are really sounding so positive & motivated - that with all your positive energy, I'm certain you are going to get the birth you so dearly want! Now dont forget - lotsa rest 'ay!!!!! |
