Right, so i've been taking Citalopram for various reasons and my doctor said to stop taking them now I am pregnant.. However my psychiatrist said they were safe. I need to take them, I am going mental without them and the mood swings and anger and crap are terrible.
my question is: Have any of you taken citalopram or ciprimil or anything like that during pregnancy? I'm seriously weighing up the options of choosing meds over a baby tbh - I dont know if I can handle 9 months of all this angst and other crap. well, I stopped taking my Citalopram when I found out I was pregnant, but the doctor, OB, midwife and Psychiatrist all said they are safe!
Im now 20 weeks and have just started taking them again. I really think you should take them! what does your midwife say? ohh and I forgot to say, Im actually on double the dose as during pregnancy you have more blood which means the normal dose sometimes Isn't enough to 'help' |

Citalopram is currently considered the "safest" option during pregnancy as there are so far no known side effects on bubs. I'm surprised your doctor outright told you to stop if your mental health will deteriorate without them. Bottom line is if you need them you gotta take them.
I've not been allowed to come off Paroxatine for my pregnancy although there are some risks of congenital heart defects, but the risks of me coming off is far worse. I was allowed to reduce my meds and that was it, I'm not even allowed to switch to Citalopram again due to the risks on my mental health. Realistically the risks are still smaller and would be smaller still for you. I even had a friend who had to go back on lithium in her second trimester when she was pregnant, huge risks there but it would have been worse for her mental health and yes bubs is fine. i took citalopram through my first pregnancy. I was on 40mg a day (or 40something). I had been on anti depressants for 5years and didnt cope well off them at all. It was better and safer for me to be on them than off them. It is sooo important that mum is healthy. A depressed or anxious mum is no good for growing a baby.
i have no idea why your dr would have said that but i would keep taking them if you dont think you will cope well off them. The interesting thing for me is that after having my son i came off anti depressants and havent been on them in a year now. Pregnancy seemed to help sort out my hormones and anxiety. |

I'm taking another anti-depressant that is less safe than citalopram, so I also don't know why your doctor would have said to stop it. But a lot of doctors are less experienced with a/ds so I would trust the psychiatrist. -------------

I didnt know why either - and thats exactly why I made this thread! He wasnt sure because his medical books only said things about animal studies bla bla bla.
