I'm quite confused if this is normal or not. Jack was quite a simple baby to figure out, Ava's really hard work though!

Symptoms:
-spills most feeds unless winded 4-5 times (like 20ml at a time usually)
-vomits every couple of feeds (used to be every feed)
-seems to struggle to feed even though she's been moved up to a faster teat, checked for tongue tie etc
-struggling to wind properly and is starting to get upset about it (that didn't happen til today)
-has starting making horrible choking/rasping sounds when she finally does burp (like when you're dryretching after vomitting up everything) and it clearly hurts her
-the biggest one is she screams (not just cries, screams) from about 2am till sometimes 10am every day. So seeing as I only get her down about 11/11.30 at night, I'm getting about 2.5 hours sleep a day.

Any suggestions? I've tried all the usual stuff like winding more often, in different positions, gripe water (seems to help a little bit). I think it may be colic but not quite sure? I'll go and get some colic stuff made up if it is, but don't want to give her anything unless I have a fair idea of what's causing it all.

Yeah I don't think she's spilly enough for it to be reflux, like she spills but its not vomit or anything and its not after every feed, or even most feeds lately. I think its mainly the few hours of constant screaming that have got me worried, everything else I can deal with

Oh forgot to say she pulls her legs up, arches her back then straightens etc like they say colicky babies do, that's why I'm thinking maybe colic but don't want to assume if others don't think it sounds like that.

It could be silent reflux and a bit collicky too.

Deff sounds like reflux and colic to me- Locks was the same at that age.
The colic all centred around the trapped air in his bowel... whether it triggered it, or was a result I dont know- but the outcome was the 'stiff as a board', high pitch screaming, body contorting type behaviour. The reflux was an added bonus too. Mind you- who knows what comes first! Prob is, they tend to swallow air when they get upset, esp w reflux as theyre swallowing acid down too.... then it goes through them- resulting in the colic. Or vise versa.

Are you doing all the physical things- eg- cot on a 30 deg angle (head end) keep upright for min 20 min after feed, and as much as poss generally. If you BF- check out your diet for foods that can irritate it. If FF try a diff formula? Perhaps a thickened one. Refluxy babes love being jiggled, held, carried, wrapped on you. frustrating- but it helps.

Its really tough- I feel for you.... Dont be afraid to talk to ya doc about it... I wish I had sooner.

You cant survive on so little sleep- do you have good support??

You could try giving Colimed by Nathuropharm a go. Does anyone else "around" you have some you can try if you don't want to buy it in case it doesn't work?

Sounds a lot like what's going on with my DS. All started at about 6wks.
I'm trying to figure out if it's colic or reflux, the symptoms all sound very similar to me.

He seems to settle almost instantly after a dose of gripe water - which makes me think it's reflux (have you ever had indigestion and then taken liquid antacid? The relief is wonderful).

Then again, his tummy gurgles and he seems to have farty wind issues - which makes me think it's colic.

He doesn't spill much, I don't think it's much? A bit when being burbed after feeding. Only a couple of times it's been a quantity of milk - though that has been more lately.
He used to be a real greedy guts feeding every 2 hours during the day. Then BF started to upset him. Plunket said to try and stretch him to 3 hrs, he had a better day when I did that, until I weakened in the evening and gave him a topup after only 1.5hrs.

How do I find out what foods to avoid?

Sounds like Jake except he would have his yelling time during the day.

The arching, is it while feeding??? Quite common with reflux and its also common for it to happen as their tummy empties. Jakes reflux is about 2-2.5 hours after a feed. So the tummy is pretty empty so its alot more stomach acid than milk coming up. ouchie.

He has silent reflux and has only spilled 5 times so far. He chokes on the milk when it comes up and it is 100 times worse if his nose is congested. Would recommend saline and a nasal aspirator to try and clear the mucus from the nose. If it doesnt clear up talk to our GP about some jr otrivin. Once jakes nose was clear he stopped choking as he was able to breathe through his nose when the milk was in his mouth. Of course, that may not apply

He still had choking episodes now if he gets a cold.

Jake also had colic and I gave him rhuger for that. It did help with the colic but not the reflux. I still have some here if you want to give it a go... PM me if you do.

I drank fennel tea wihen bfing Jake and I syringed it into him when we switched to ff and we never ever had colic issues so might be worth a try. He had silent reflux too with meant he screamed whenever he wasn't being held upright.

The arching is after feeding, not during. She has had a cold so maybe that's contributing (although she's doing a lot better now she's over it).

Yeah I've always had the bed angled and keep her upright for as long as possible... no I don't have much support at home because DH is away all the time but mum does pop in every couple of nights to help put Jack to bed, so I do get a bit of a break for an hour or so.

Surely sleep's just over-rated? Although I did have 2x 3hour stretches last night and I feel amazing today!

Sounds like reflux to me.
Eimear was similar, and I spent about 2 weeks sleeping on the recliner with her between 10pm and 2am. Not much spilling but a sore tummy and I could hear her gulping acid back into her tummy.
I BF and once I cut both wheat and dairy out of my diet she became a much happier baby.

She was a very difficult winder as well. We found infacol worked much better for us than gripe water.

Also Eimear didn't spill at all. Aoife did spill a a little bit but was a 'happy chucker'.

Yep m/w has said its reflux so we now have infant gaviscon and we'll see how we go with that. Thanks for the advice ladies, fingers crossed life gets a bit better! (Although DH is home tomorrow - who knows how long for though - so at least I can get a hand with things (and maybe some more sleep))
