Subject: how to change evening routine

Our normal routine at night for Ben is he feeds on and off with 10min naps from about 6.30/7pm till we go to bed at 9.30pm-ish and then he is generally asleep by 10.30pm. He will then usually sleep for 6+hrs - I am definately not complaining!

But I am hoping to get my evenings back so was thinking to put him to bed about 7.30pm (after I put Jack down) and dream feed him at about 10pm. Any suggestions about how I make the change? Do I go cold turkey and make the change? Or do I change gradually and if so how/when do I introduce the dream feed? I am not sure how to go about it as the few times that he has had 30-45min naps in the evenings he has woken at least twice in the night.

Do you have a bedtime routine e.g. dinner, bath, story, bed for Jack? If so then I would just get Ben into a similar routine as he's a few months old now - can you bath them together, then get DH to put Jack to bed while you feed Ben (or feed him while DH reads Jack a story?), then put Ben to bed? It might take a little while to get the logistics sorted out but it will be worthwhile in the long run...

And with the dreamfeed thing, just start introducing it before you go to bed, say around 10pm? If it doesn't work and Ben wakes at his usual time (4am - 5am?) keep perservering, it took us a good few weeks before DD dropped the middle of the night feed even with a dreamfeed.

Linzy, we introduced the dreamfeed at 9 weeks and got our evenings back that same week! Basically, his routine from 9 weeks has been: feed at 6pm, top up, bath, massage, cuddles and in bed by 7pm. His dreamfeed is at 10-10.30pm. I do give him a formula top up so that helps as otherwise he wouldn't sleep from 7pm to 10ish pm as my milk supply is pretty non existent in the evenings. For a couple of weeks he still woke up around 4am for a feed, but started sleeping through at 12 weeks.

we have a night time routine for Jack but I have to do almost all of it as Jack will not let DH put him down to bed anymore and I have to stay with him until he is asleep - a result of Ben's arrival I think.

I am out tonight (and so is Ben) so might try the change cold turkey tomorrow night
