Okay so I feel a bit lame asking these questions when it's second time round...but I never had any noticaeble braxton hicks with Ollie.

In the week or so I've been having what I assume are braxton hicks but they are much more painful than I expected and I feel an urge to push. Not the kind of pushing that I felt when actually pushing Ollie out - but identical to the first two hours of my labour with him - it kept me running to the toilet and is this time too.

These contractions are not regular at all - mostly have been every few hours but every so often they seem to settle into a 30-45 min pattern. They are not unbearable pain wise - but they make me catch my breath and need to stop what I'm doing.

So, I'm wondering what other people have experienced with their Braxton Hicks. I'm not overly concerned - except for the fact that I want to push and I haven't spoken to anyone else whose felt like that.

Kate, I have painful BH and on the odd occassion they actually hurt so much that they stop me in my tracks and yes I have felt the urge to push. I think it's actually my bodys natural reflex to try and counteract the pain and contracting of the uterus.

I don't know what, if any, your caffine intake is, but if you are drinking anything with caffine in it, minimise the amount of caffine you're taking as this can contribute to painful BH. Also, when you need to pee...PEE, don't try and hang on. Full bladders can cause strong BH. And also drink lots of water to stay hydrated, this can help minimise them aswell.

My MW told me that whoever said BH don't or shouldn't hurt must have been a man and that it's actually quite common to have painful BH.

ETA: are you due in Dec or Nov? Think we have you on our due list in Dec but haven't seen you around in there for aaaaaaaggggges?

I had tons of false labour both times and it was incredibly painful and often would settle into a pattern but then just disappear. Mine often happened in the evening and would last into the early hours of the morning.
Mostly the pain would feel like my bump tightening but sometimes it was also accompanied with period like pain and back ache. I actually thought my real labour was just another false one until my waters broke.

Never had the urge to push though, but being constipated or having upset guts can cause false labour and false labour can course a tummy upset so it could maybe be your guts giving you that feeling. Or it might just be because the baby is lying in an awkward position.

To be on the safe side though I would talk to your midwife, normally they can ask a few specific questions and know right away what is going on and they also might just want to check your cervix to be sure (my mw never did and I had absolutely heaps of false labour)

I had extremely painful BH (well, what I thought was BH), but my MW actually thought they were irritable uterus. Mine were like really painful period cramps, and were exactly how my labour started also. I had them from about 25 weeks, right through till the end, and it was only in the last few weeks that I got 'real' BH, where I would get my whole tummy tightening up, but with no pain....

I never felt te urge to push though (just to crawl up in a ball so I could breathe more easily! )

Have you had a chat to your MW about it? Not that it's probably anything to worry about but just to be on the safe side.

I had irritable uterus with the gremlins, contractions every 10 min or so for weeks and they bloody hurt, but never the urge to push..

Thanks guys. AmStaff I think you may have hit the nail on the head - I have been enjoying my coffee (because I couldn't stomach it with Ollie) so maybe that's the issue. Although Blondy I've also been wondering a bit about irritable uterus.

I'm seeing the MW on Tuesday so will definitely talk about it more then. She wasn't concerned when I talked to her the other day but I hadn't told her that I felt like pushing so it will be interesting to see what she says.

In the meantime I guess I will give up the coffee and see if that helps.
