I totally understand that babies need feeds at night and I have no issue with that at all. However, Ashley is waking 6 times between 10.30pm and 6.30am (inclusive of those times) and I am exhausted. She is restless in between those wakings too so neither of us are getting good sleep. I feed her every 2 to 3 hours during the night so the other times I resettle.

I think it is an upset tummy as when she has good days she is so relaxed but on her bad days she just squirms, grunts etc. She isn't a big crier unless hungry and doesn't spill at all.

She won't burp at night no matter how long I try. I hear her tummy making noises and she farts constantly all night. We use infacol regularly.

Anyone got any ideas on what might be causing this and if there is anything I can try to help? I am so tired!

there was another thread about wind recently - and the baby whisperer method was mentioned. basically its to keep them lying down for a bit after feeding and rub their tummy in a circular motion then sit them up on your knee with a hand under their chin and rub their back in an upward motion.

My husband was always better at getting wind out - i think it was cause his hands are bigger! maybe make it hubbys job!

FionaS, l have exactly the same wind issues with Oliver and it wakes him too. He is exclusively BF and only has one dirty nappy each week - runny so not constipated as such. However he seems to fart and grunt all week prior to the dirty nappy, especially at night. ( what l eat doesn't seem to make a difference)

Another way to wind baby is to lie them back and gently squeeze the tummy then sit them up and burp as per usual I find that nine times out of ten she burps within 1min.

If their farting then that's a good thing getting the wind out, when DD is on her tummy she farts away like nothing. Quite disturbing.

Most days Ashley is still feeding every 2 to 2.5 hours around the clock no matter how hard I try to stretch her out. She only sleeps for 1 hour at a time max day or night. Surely I am doing something wrong???

During the day she wakes every 20mins during her naps and sometimes won't resettle.

Plunket say she should be feeding 3 hourly during the day but I just can't stretch her :(

Neither of my boys has ever gone 3 hours during the day, plunket don't always know what they are talking about.

I would give colimed a try, or look at things in your diet that might be upsetting her.

Don't listen too much to the three hour feeding etc. Demand feeding is demand feeding, they ask, you give! 2 hours is well within the relms of a normal stretch, though, especially around growth spurt time.

Heres some tips, to try and stretch it out.

Make sure she is draining the first breast entirely before offering the other side. That is important so she gets the filling fatty hindmilk. You will be able to tell she has drained it as she will either become fussy at breast, or her sucking changes. If she has fallen asleep at the breast, wake her, change and burp her and offer her the other side. If she refuses, she has had enough and offer that side next time. If she only has a small feed of that side, offer that same side first next time.
Trying to stretch her out - as in leaving her to grizzle and cry etc will make for a not very good feed when you do feed her as she will have worked herself up and won't be in a frame of mind to settle in.
Get in touch with La Leche, they are great.
Oh yeah, and breastmilk goes through babies systems faster than substitute, thats why "clock" feeding dosne't work as well for boobie babies, and why you need to make sure baby is finishing a side properly.

Big hugs, it really really sucks when its so hard.
Any other BF questions feel free to get in touch, am registered and liscenced.

She ins't colicky - doesn't cry much at all and settles with cuddles or milk...she just wants to eat a lot.

Thanks fattarts, I'm definitely doing all those things :)

Ok, your first post was talking about her having wind.

Yeah she does have wind...we can hear it and she struggles with it but doesn't cry about it as such. She is so hard to burp and farts dozens of times a day. She lies in bed at night grunting and carrying on as the wind moves up and down.

And very appreciated Fattarts. Always good to get new ideas and reassurance on used one :)

Poor poppet is pretty settled through the day but always wakes 20mins into naps. But at night I can hear the milk going up and down in her throat etc. She doesn't cry but squirms and sounds uncomfe. The head of her bed is raised and as she is happy and gaining well I'm pretty sure it isn't silent reflux.

I was just doing one sided feeding but sometimes she takes from both. In the night she is so sleepy it is hard to get a good feed in and she simply does not give up any burps in the night.

Last night I fed her at 1.30 and must've fallen asleep while doing so. I woke at 3 sitting up in bed holding her!!! She had obviously woken and re-latched herself so had another feed after just 1.5 hours. Little rascal. I have no idea how I managed to continue to hold her and sleep at the same time!

Colimed is for helping with wind, it's not specifically for colic. There is also a teething one that weleda make that says it is good for periods of unsettledness as well.

Personally I would look at your diet, Kyle did all that until I took dairy out of my diet and then he was all good. I also took him to a cranial osteopath (not sure if it helped or not as I took dairy out at the same time) because he was vontouse delivery so figured he could have had things knocked out of whack a bit.
I eat some dairy now but if I over do it he gets refluxy (I wouldn't say he has ever had proper reflux but definitely gets spilly and upset and sometimes not spilly but makes wet burpy noises and screams and would back arch and squirm)

I took Dairy out totally (i.e. nothing at all with any dairy in it...no biscuits etc etc) for 2 weeks. I thought I saw a change for a few days about 3 days into the diet but then she just reverted an was waking 1 to 2 hourly for the rest of the diet. I know it takes a month for all dairy to get out but I thought I'd see a distinct improvement in 2 weeks if it was going to help. How long did it take you to see a change?

She did one night of 4 hour stretches between feeds but was back to 2 hourly wakings last night. she has been really good and settled during the day and settles well between feeds at night too.

She doesn't poo much - just a light coating on her nappy once every day or two so I'm guessing that means she needs and uses everything she takes in with the frequent feeding??????

The refluxy stuff and his skin cleared up pretty quickly, a few days to a week maybe. He has always been an awful sleeper though and fed frequently, it just made it easier to settle him in between feeds.

Yeah if it's not all coming out the rear end she must be needing it and using it.

Do you think when you took the dairy out could have coincided with a growth spurt?

Really not sure cuppatea! Her life just seems to be one continual growth spurt! Actually, thinking on it, no...the 2 weeks previously she put on 480gms per week but the week of no dairy she put on 150gms so doubt it was a spurt.

I had the same problem with sam so I went to a naturopath. They suggested to give her some Camomile tea in a bottle and that will help release the wind. Just a little and also for me to drink it as well. Could give that a go?
